MaRGi BLash I’m a California Girl through and through! I grew up in Orange County aka “THE OC,” graduated from the University of Southern California, and afterwards worked as an entertainment reporter/ TV Host. I interviewed celebrities on the red carpet for People Magazine, UsWeekly, and Hollywood.com, to name a few.

My true passion has always been traveling. I’m blessed to have had the opportunity to travel and explore different food and cultures from around the world, and even received my frequent flyer number at only six months old. But, no matter how much I travel, San Diego is where I always return.

During the spring you’re sure to find me at Petco Park cheering on our Padres Baseball Team, at the San Diego County Fair, and enjoying the Carlsbad Flower Fields with my extremely supportive husband Nick and our beautiful baby girl Georgia Rose who is already turning one on April 1st. I’m thrilled to be part of Getaway as both Editor-in-Chief and as co-host sharing some of our favorite spots with you.

I like to think of myself as having personality, personality, personality! I love to try anything and everything at least once – sometimes twice. Born in Central California, I moved to San Diego in 2000 and traveled to every major city in the country at least twice as a TV host for multiple networks and local TV shows.

I’ve been a brand spokesman for some of the biggest brands in the world and emcee for some of the biggest sports and lifestyle events in the U.S., such as the Super Bowl, the Final Four and our very own San Diego Padres baseball team.

Even with all the travel I’ve done and all the cities I’ve been to, I still say that San Diego is the most beautiful city in the country. All four seasons are stunning and exciting in San Diego, and with spring upon us what’s not to be excited about? Now, get up and let’s go play!

Our local team is made up of a variety of ages and backgrounds working together to help you have the perfect vacation. We will never send you to a “tourist trap” because we personally explore and share what the locals love to do. Most of us were born, raised and lived here our entire lives. We love everything that the area has to offer and are thrilled to share our experiences with you.

saN dieGo citY MaP > PaGe 42La Jolla: This is an upscale area where you will find luxurious hotels, spas, shopping, fine dining, and some amazing views of the Pacific Ocean. It’s also home to the Birch Aquarium.

Pacific Beach (aka “PB”): We sometimes refer to it as Party Beach because of its fun bars andrestaurants that are perfect for party hopping.

Mission Beach: Home to the Giant Dipper, the historic wooden rollercoaster built in 1925, and Belmont Park, our version of the East Coast’s Coney Island.

Mission Bay: Home to SeaWorld San Diego, Mission Bay also has great walking paths, picnics, bonfires, and beach volleyball. There’s also plenty of fun for families with small children both in the water and on the beach - no big waves to worry about here!

old town: The birth place of California, it’s filled with restaurants, shopping, and numerous free museums. It’s a great place to really learn about the history of San Diego.

NoRth couNtY > PaGe 46 oceanside: It’s the most northern tip of San Diego before heading into Camp Pendleton, with a fun marina to explore.

carlsbad: A family-focused community that is home to LEGOLAND® and the Flower Fields. It boasts a vibrant downtown area called Carlsbad Village that is filled with great shops and restaurants.

encinitas (also includes neighboring areas Leucadia and cardiff by the sea): An area of relaxed surf cities with a great variety of beaches, cool and funky shops and boutiques along Highway 101, a vibrant surf culture, yogi’s doing yoga, vegetarian restaurants and boho-chic hipsters.

del Mar & solana Beach: Casual and beachy towns with upscale shopping and restaurants. Del Mar is also home to the San Diego County Fair ( )and the Del Mar Races during the spring and summer months.

Welcome to beautiful Sunny San Diego! Spring is a wonderful time here in San Diego with nearly perfect weather. However, during the month of June you might experience what we call “June Gloom” when the sky is overcast in the morning. But don’t fret! It will usually burn off to clear skies for a few hours and show up again in the late afternoon. Lucky for us it’s still usually warm enough to enjoy outdoor activities - just remember to wear your sunscreen! While you’re visiting, the first thing to do is start thinking like a local. San Diego is made up of small surrounding cities with their own distinct personalities, and knowing the difference between downtown and say, Carlsbad, can determine where you want to go and what you want to do.

It may sound a little confusing, but don’t worry, we have maps in the back of the magazine and videos highlighting specific towns so you can start exploring like a local in no time.

With 70 miles of beautiful coastline and a wide variety of terrain (think beaches, deserts, and mountains), it can be difficult to decide where to start. Here’s a quick and easy guide to help you explore this amazing area!

south couNtY > PaGe 48Ocean Beach (aka “OB”): Filled with beach bungalows and cottages, you’ll find a relaxed bohemian crowd who prides themselves in the variety of small businesses and locally-owned establishments. OB’s waterfront is known as Dog Beach where dogs can enjoy being leash-free 24 hours a day.

Point Loma (also includes shelter island and harbor island): This is a great spot to go sport fishing or to explore the beautiful marina filled with “super yachts.”It’s also home to the Cabrillo National Monument ( ).

hillcrest: A friendly neighborhood with numerous locally-owned businesses like boutiques, bars, clubs, restaurants and thrift stores. It’s also supportive of the gay and lesbian community and has a high population of LGBT.

North Park: Recently named by Forbes Magazine as “One of America’s Hippest Hipster Neighborhoods.” Enjoy locally-owned and operated restaurants, art galleries and alternative boutiques.

south Park: We like to tell people that South Park is North Park for grown-ups. Where North Park is young and comes alive at night and on the weekends, South Park is a collection of indie shops, social consciousness raising coffee houses, and unique eateries, all with a slight bohemian flair.

Mission valley (aka hotel circle): Offers great shopping at the Fashion Valley Mall and is the place to watch the San Diego Chargers play football at Qualcomm Stadium.

Balboa Park: The park offers 1,200 acres of beautiful open spaces, gardens, muse-ums, theaters, amazing architecture, and of course, the world famous San Diego Zoo.

coronado island: An affluent resort city which is home to Hotel Del, one of the oldest and largest of all wooden buildings in California and considered a national and California historical landmark. Coronado Beach was rated #1 in the US in 2012 according Dr. Beach, and Orange Avenue is our favorite place to take a stroll. There are also more retired admirals per square foot on the island than anywhere in the world.

downtown/GasLamp: Historic district in the heart of Downtown with plenty of restaurants, nightclubs, lounges and live music venues. You’ll find Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres baseball team, and the Convention Center located downtown.

chula vista: The location of the Sleep Train Amphitheatre, the U.S Olympic Training Center, and the Living Coast Discovery Center - perfect for a family outing.

angela hernandezabout me: I grew up in Brook-lyn, NY and lived in Chicago for 10 years. I dreamed of living in San Diego even when I visited. When I finally did visit, I vowed to move closer to the beach and the palm trees. Now that I have, I don’t think I’ll ever leave. I have not found more perfect weather and friendly people anywhere else during my travels.

why i love san diego: San Diego seems to be a melt-ing pot of people from all over

the country. I love meeting them and inquiring about what brought them out here.

Favorite thing to eat at the Fair: Chocolate covered bacon!What I tell my friends when they visit: “You will need sunglasses and a light sweater for the eve-nings year-round”.

carianne steinmanabout me: I’ve lived in San Diego since I was 6 years old, and although I love to travel, I can’t imagine a better place to call “home!” I enjoy having un-scheduled time so I can go on adventures and see where the day might lead me. I can have fun pretty much anywhere!

why i love san diego: My favorite thing about San Diego is the variety it offers. I can enjoy the peacefulness of nature on the beach or a hillside, or I can get dressed up and head downtown for a fun party! I also really love the fact that Comic-Con is based here.

Where you’ll find me on a saturday: During the day, I’ll usually be checking out the tide pools at the beach or taking a stroll around the San Diego Zoo or Safari Park. Once the

sun sets, I like to enjoy a con-cert downtown or take in a show at one of our local theaters.

Fun fact about san diego: San Diego is home to The Star of India, the world’s oldest ship that still regularly sails!

Favorite Place to watch the sunset: Mt. Soledad in La Jolla. What a beautiful view of San Diego!

Favorite thing to eat at the Fair: I love the yummy cake at the Gingerbread Shop.

chelsea Largoza about me: I’m a San Diego native, born and raised in the South Bay. After graduating from UC Berkeley in the sum-mer of 2012, I couldn’t wait to move back down to my home-town! I’ve studied Media Culture and Consumer Behavior at Cal, and hope to pursue a career in Entertainment Production.

why i love san diego: Family, friends, Mexican food, and impeccable weather 24/7.

hannah Johnstonabout Me: After moving to San Diego when I was 5, I’ve spent nearly 21 years learning about and loving all that my beautiful hometown has to offer. I even studied Literature/Writing at UC San Diego, so I clearly can’t get enough of this place! You’ll usually find me toes deep in the sand at D Street or hiking Cowles Mountain with my rot-ties, but my favorite place to be is tucked in the back of a coffee shop, listening to local musi-cians.

why i love san diego: You can literally find something fun to do every day of the year. This isn’t a small town where your neighbors know your secrets; there are fresh faces and excit-ing events all over the place. I love that we have different festivals every month, trendy farmers markets, an amazingly diverse nightlife, more restau-rants than you can count, and famous attractions that never get old.

Where you’ll find me on a saturday: Shopping, eating, or sipping on a guava mimosa somewhere on the 101 in Encinitas.

Favorite activity: Hiking/going to the beach with my dogs.

Favorite thing to do in the spring: Attend all of the San Diego festivals and farmers markets.

Madison teagueabout me: I am a 23-year-old college graduate and San Di-ego Native looking for my next big adventure in this awesome city.

why i love san diego: Instead of putting on a heavy coat and scarf in the middle of January, I put my paddleboard on top of my car.

what i tell my friends when they visit: Always ask a local where and what they recom-mend before ordering a burrito. Guaranteed they’ll point you in a life changing direction.

Fun fact about san diego: Winter is the absolute besttime to watch sunsets!

Favorite Place to eat in sd: Anything coastal! Beachy breakfast shacks, like Swamis Café in Encinitas, or romantic water front restaurants like Bali Hai. I’ll eat anything; it’s the atmosphere that keeps me coming back.

Favorite Place to watch the sunset: Torrey Pines State Reserve. Climbing to the highest rock and watching the ocean change colors with the sky is by far one of the coolest sights in San Diego.

Paige Battcherabout me: I’m a television host and entrepreneur who grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, which means I have an appreciation for fine bourbon and the ten-dency to talk with strangers. I’ve played eight competitive sports, visited five continents, and lived in four countries: the U.S., The Netherlands, Thailand, and Brazil. I live in San Diego with my partner, Amanda, and our adorable fur baby, Lion Pup.

surf divas:You can’t come to San Diego and not try to surf! Twins Izzy and Coco founded the Surf Divas School back in 1996. Initially they wanted to provide a place for women to learn comfortably in a male-dominant sport. But as the school grew, they added male and female instructors and co-ed camps for kids and individual instruction.

The whole process is so easy and fun; all you have to do is show up with a bathing suit and a towel and they provide the rest. Surf Diva takes care of the boards and wetsuits, and each lesson is started with a safety talk and on-shore instruc-tion before heading out to the water. Their instructions are so good you’ll have plenty of confidence to get onto a surf board and ride the waves.

Most of the instructors are certified lifeguards who are pas-sionate about surfing and have years of surfing experience. They offer clear and patient instruction with beginners and children, so don’t worry if you or your child is new to surfing.

We checked out this place with one of our reporters who had never surfed before and by the end of the lesson she was riding the waves. Do you want to land in a place of voyage and discoveries and experience a piece of historical America that belongs to San Diego? In 1542 Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, a Portuguese explorer, landed his fleet of ships on the southern tip of San Diego known today as Point Loma. This historical land piece is now a national monument named Cabrillo National Monument.

Cabrillo was part of a sixteenth century expedition into what are now known as the San Diego Bay and the surrounding western area. On September 28, 1542, Cabrillo claimed this land for the Spaniards. It also marked the first arrival of non-natives (Native American peoples) to the west coast. To commemorate this historic event, you’ll find the statue of an extremely tall and proud-standing Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo at the monument.

The visitor center is a really cool place to start your exploration of the monument. In the center you can find rangers to answer your questions and short educational films on Cabrillo’s history. The cost is five dollars per person to drive in or three dollars per person to walk in. I suggest you drive in – it’s a long walk up to this fantastic spot. A really neat bonus is that your paid admission gets you back into the park for the entire week! And, if you happen to take public transportation like I did, then your admission to the park is included in your bus fare.

The monument also houses a lighthouse (The Old Point Loma Lighthouse) dating back 150 years which still stands for viewing. The lighthouse began its operation in 1851 until it stopped serving the public in 1891.

Incidentally, a second lighthouse was built since the first one was often missed through the thick surrounding fog. You can visit the inside of the lighthouse and take a peek at the assistants’ quarters for a glimpse into what it was like to live in a lighthouse in the 1800s.

This national monument at one time also served as a fort for the United States Army and was known as Fort Rosecrans, a highly strategic military spot. While venturing around the monument, I came upon the camouflaged soldier watch post building nestled in the surrounding terrain.

The monument’s large slice of land is 160 acres, housing over five tree types and California’s native sage brush plant. I took the two-mile Bayside Trail starting near the lighthouse and down along the patches of wildflowers. On the west side, I found the much-talked about tide pools where I peeked inside the blue waters of my city’s ecosystem and saw a sea anemone. I was told by the ranger it was definitely possible to see a gray fox, a raccoon, squirrels or bunnies on my walk and found that lovely birds inhabited the area as well.

At one point, I spotted a Great Blue Heron near the shoreline awaiting his call to dinner. There is also a unique Whale Outlook vantage point for viewing. And, if you visit between November and April, you might catch sight of a whale during their annual migration south to the warmer lagoons of Mexico.

My final tip to leave you with is this: you cannot miss the spectacular views of our Pacific Ocean, military ships and sights veering into Mexico! You’ll need at least one roll of film or a large amount of memory for your camera phone, especially one that takes in San Diego in panoramic snapshots, so you can bring home permanent memories of your visit nps.gov/cabr/index.htm

The Seed & Bulb Growing program was created to provide quality education of agriculture and gardening to pre-school through second grade students.

This fun and educational opportunity teaches these youngsters the growing process of sunflowers and ranun-culus bulbs while allowing them the chance to get their hands dirty. What kid doesn’t enjoy playing in the dirt? Your little ones can also enjoy a guided tour of a working ranunculus farm.

The San Diego County Fair will celebrate the 50th Anniver-sary of the British Invasion this year. The Del Mar Fairgrounds will pay tribute to the musical acts and other popular British culture which swept the nation, and will feature two exhibi-tions never seen before in California.

You can catch “The Beatles! - Backstage and Behind the Scenes,” a fine art photography exhibition from the CBS photo archive with 84 never-before published images of the Beatles first appearances in America in 1964, and “Give Peace a Chance,” which features photography from John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s historic “bed-in” for peace.

The San Diego County Fair is the largest annual event in San Diego County and is the fourth largest fair in North America, drawing more than 1.4 million annually. We love the fact that there is so much to do here for the entire family, and we make it a point to visit every year. The friendly staff will seat you close to the cozy fireplace where you’ll feel as if you’re in someone’s living room out in the country in the middle of France. Jackets and ties are not required, but we suggest leaving those sports jerseys, jeans and flip-flops at home. However, we think you’ll enjoy getting a little dressed up for the evening.

Café Chloe is a charming intimate café with both indoor and outdoor seating. The fact that it’s located on a corner with wraparound bistro tables makes it even more Parisian. The entire menu is amazing with entrees such as their Moules a la Valencienne, which are mussels sautéed with a light broth of chorizo, fennel, saffron and orange. It’s served with grilled ciabatta which you can use to soak up every last drop of the broth. If you are looking for a special night filled with great food, phenomenal service and an elegant setting, Amaya in La Jolla is fine-dining at its best. You might recognize the name Amaya from its sister restaurant located inside the “The Grand Del Mar,” but what we love about this version, which opened in March 2013, is that the restaurant is inspired by Italian palazzos. The décor consists of elaborate ceiling and flooring, iron and crystal chandeliers, and hand-painted frescos and borders with stunning colors of a rich palate of gold, reds, rose and deep plum. Now, while that might sound over the top and stuffy, you’ll be surprised by the warm, welcoming and casual atmosphere.

So, the interior may have a European style but don’t expect “Italian Food.” There’s no pasta with marinara on this menu. Executive Chef Camron Woods brings a fun adventurous side of fresh ingredients to this Contemporary American fare. In addition, Chef Woods offers daily “rustic” southern specials such as Fried Chicken or Shrimp & Grits as homage to his southern roots.

You can start your dining adventure with the Crab and Lobster Bisque which is creamy, rich and delicious, and Grilled Spanish Octopus with a harissa dressing, heirloom tomatoes with melt-in-your-mouth burrata and a refreshing basil sorbet. You might also enjoy the Scallops and Beef Short Ribs, and for a little southern taste, the Fried Quail with smoked mac ‘n cheese. With this movement of eco-friendly, sustainable resources and the farm-to-table mentality here in San Diego, it’s no surprise that eateries are jumping on board and Fig Tree Café, the newest addition to Liberty Station, is no exception. The menu is littered with a variety of tasty choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner while only using fresh, local ingredients and humanely raised meats. Although there are three locations throughout San Diego, not every location serves the same menu options. When you arrive, you’ll notice an interesting fountain on the outside patio, and the smell of the white magnolias and pink Bougainvillea scaling the trellis. The restaurant is decorated in an eclectic, farm house feel the owners call “rustic industrial.”

When it’s time to choose your meal, the house-made Lobster & Blue Crab Cake benedict, or “Bennie,” is a great choice along with the Grilled Turkey Panini and Greek side salad. The Turkey Panini is packed with fresh, flavorful ingredients such as bacon, avocado, and garlic aioli, and the “Bennie” is smothered in hollandaise and served with house potatoes with a crispy texture. A party never feels complete without a cake. As a whole, the cake is beautiful, festive, and a symbol of what you’re celebrat-ing. But once it is sliced and served, it often loses its meaning. Your eyes taste your food long before your tongue does, so guests may choose not to have a slice of cake if it is not sliced and presented well; half of the cake will probably be thrown out.

Cupcakes offer an alternative solution, as they are beautiful individually or as a whole set. Each cupcake is a little cake, just for you. This is the vision behind Little cakes cupcake Kitchen, the two-time winner of Food Network’s Cupcake Wars who has been baking cupcakes of all flavors in Vista since 2010.

Owner Don Hein opened up shop because he wanted to try something completely new after working in the service industry for over a decade. Since he had no formal baking experience, Hein and his staff borrowed a few recipes, including the popular Pancakes and Bacon from his brother’s cupcake shop, Yellow Leaf, which is located in Seattle, Washington. Eventually, Little Cakes went on to create their own flavors, which make up the 130 flavors on their menu today.

When you walk into the bakery, you’re sure you’ve entered your mom’s kitchen. The modern country-style decor and portraits of Hein, his wife Becky, and their family, will send you into such a state of nostalgia, you will think you are visiting home for the weekend. A few select cupcakes of the day cover the counter, as if they were pulled fresh out of your oven.

Ask any member of the staff about one or all of their menu items, and they can tell you everything you want to know. Most of them are bakers and front-of-house servers who know the bakery inside and out. Their cupcakes are freshly baked

in-house every day, and they always have chocolate, vanilla, and red velvet on hand, plus a handful of other flavors they post on their website.

Little Cakes also updates their daily flavor list on their website if a flavor runs out. Looking for something sweet while you’re at the beach or exploring San Diego? They even have an app so you can decide what flavor you want anytime a craving hits! Available for both iPhone and Android, the app provides daily menus, a digital Frequent Buyers Card, and a full list of flavors with their ingredients. This is especially helpful for customers who may have allergies to certain ingredients.

As cupcakes were increasing in popularity, Hein felt the need for a bakery in the North County area, and found Vista to be a perfect location. They were welcomed with open arms by the city and surrounding communities, and have since created partnerships with Mother Earth Brew Co. and other local brewer-ies to provide stout, pale ale, hefeweizen, and other beers for cupcake flavors such as Irish Car Bomb, Drunken Orange, and Chocolate Stout.

It was only three months after they opened when Food Net-work contacted them to audition for Cupcake Wars. After much debate, Hein and his staff declined the offer. Nine months later, they received another call and decided to give it a shot! When they returned home as champions at the end of 2011, the hard part was keeping it a secret from their customers for six months, who were constantly asking if and when they were going to be on the show. That is a feat in itself!

For example, the French Toast cupcake includes a maple cupcake with cinnamon chips, vanilla buttercream, and maple syrup, ingredients which usually make up a serving of french toast. With each bite, you get a full, connected, and real taste of what it is you are eating. The taste is so real, imagine how the Mimosa and Margarita cupcakes will make you feel! If you are wondering why the icing tastes excep-tionally good (without overpowering the taste of the cupcake), it’s because of their signature ingredient - Italian buttercream. Hein owes a great deal of their back-to-back Cupcake Wars win, and the bakery’s overall success, to this light and fluffy icing. The other reason for the win? The bakers, of course!

A better title to describe the staff at Little Cakes is Little Family. Working together in a mere 800 square foot bakery, you can’t help but get close to each other. But this team of bakers is even closer. They all support one another, and are still able to work individually; Hein trusts each of them to carry out orders and cake tastings on their own. Anna Carlson, Hein’s manager and

maid of honor at his wedding, brings her dog to his house every morning for a play date while they have their morning meeting. The staff members include their ideas to create their long list of flavors, and aren’t afraid to let each other know if a certain flavor isn’t the best.

Never forgetting the people who brought them success, Little Cakes holds numerous events to give back to their community. Their weekly specials consist of Military Mondays, Happy Hour, and discounts on day-old cupcakes.

Occasionally they will sponsor youth sports teams, and partner with organizations in the city or their Vista Village Center home to put on movie nights and other events. They recently hosted Safety Day, a fun educational event with representatives from the Vista Fire Department, San Diego Blood Bank, and Escondido Humane Center, to name a few.

Cakes will never go out of style. Your guests will more than likely eat and enjoy a slice of cake if you give it to them.
