START PROJECT BASED LEARNING: 2. GOALS FOR TODAY
Why go to all the hassle of PBL? Come up with a compelling question that will
drive your next class project to success. Get resources and support as you add PBL to
your curriculum. We won’t do everything today, just the big Q.

START PROJECT BASED LEARNING: 3. WHY PBL?
A vital piece to teach 21st C skills and science concepts woven into the NGSS and Common Core .
PBL prepares kids to make things happen in their own lives.
Engages students in meaningful projects and learn on a need-to-know basis.
The world needs people who can make things happen for all of us.

START PROJECT BASED LEARNING: 4A. “MY SUMMER PROJECT” + TEACHING INSIGHTS Briefly describe your project. What can you apply to designing projects for
students? Insights, attitudes, skills, what made it a meaningful experience etc.

START PROJECT BASED LEARNING: 4C. PROJECT MANAGEMENT: TO DO LISTS + SHOPPING LISTS
Use what you know about making your own projects real and apply to developing your own class projects.
Students can make small projects happen too – making a meal, packing for camp, planning a birthday party.
The compelling question will drive how you put the project together AND will drive it for your students too, using existing project management skills.

5. WHICH IDEA IS A PBL THAT COULD WORK FOR STUDENTS? WHY/WHY NOT?

infectious illnesses at school?

START PROJECT BASED LEARNING: 6B. THE ‘SWEET SPOT’ FOR COMPELLING PBL
Includes ‘Big Ideas’ in the content concepts and standards.
Students feel it’s a real problem for them, their community or the world.
Fun, playful stuff. 21st C skills
National Ed Tech Stds for Students, 21st C Skills and NGSS
Imaginative, creative, an indefinable ‘wow’ factor.
Meaningful. Opportunity to help others.

START PROJECT BASED LEARNING: 6C. THE JOURNEY METAPHOR
A great destination that students might help select (product, service, purpose).
In good company. Enough time for course re-calculations. Packing needs you to have an idea of where you are
going. Not too prescribed or you lose the adventure and fun. But clear enough that you don’t get dangerously lost.

START PROJECT BASED LEARNING: 8. GENERATE/FIND DRIVING QUESTIONS
Brainstorm anything.
And/or look through the news (online) for problems to reframe as project opportunities.
Does the question suggest a way to answer it? Is it science related? Is it fun, manageable, meaningful?
Write one or two on a whiteboard to share.
