Lunar Mission Summary: LRO

• Schedule:• Launch June 2, 2009 (tentative).• First delivery to PDS Jan. 19, 2010, release to public Feb. 2, 2010.• Subsequent data releases every 3 months.

• Status:• Biweekly Data Working Group telecons continue.• Science teams and PDS nodes passed delivery readiness tests.• LROC and LOLA Data Nodes are ready.• PDS is ready to receive archive deliveries.• Remaining archive preparation tasks:

• Design and review highly-derived data products for Diviner and LAMP, pending analysis of raw data.

• Complete SPICE kernel preparation by those teams that will deliver SPICE data.


Lunar Mission Summary: LCROSS

• Schedule:• Launch June 2, 2009, with LRO; impact TBD, ~August 27.• Single delivery to PDS ~Feb. 6, 2010; release ~Feb. 27, 2010.

• Status:• LCROSS and PDS are currently conducting delivery readiness tests,

correcting errors found in trial delivery.• Archiving development schedule continues to slip due to

insufficient LCROSS resources. LCROSS has a single person responsible for archiving 17 data sets from 9 instruments. Development work will probably continue beyond launch.

• LCROSS has not (yet) prepared a SPICE archive, despite assistance from NAIF.

• Four Earth-based observers have been selected.• Required to submit PDS archive.• Workshop tentatively scheduled for June 12 at Ames; Geosciences

Node will attend workshop to discuss archiving.


Lunar Mission Summary

• GRAIL• Launch fall 2011, probably 1 delivery to PDS in Dec. 2012.• Archive agreement with PDS in place; Archive Plan in

preparation with Sami Asmar, GRAIL rep.

• Chandrayaan-1• Launched Oct. 22, 2008, ~2 year mission.• No relationship between PDS and ISRO for archiving. PDS

works with U.S.-based teams Mini-RF and M3 independently.

• Mini-RF data to be archived at Geosciences, starting January 2010. Same instrument team as mini-RF on LRO.

• M3 data to be archived at Imaging, schedule TBD.


Mars Mission Summary: Active Missions

• Odyssey – Release 27, April 1, 2009; no issues.• MER – Release 20, May 15, 2009. Working on getting

Mössbauer and APXS derived data from providers; otherwise no issues.

• Mars Express – releases continue through PSA.• Phoenix – Release 3, April 29, 2009. Final release.

• ITAR clearance for calibration reports is proceeding. • Have set precedent for how to conduct ITAR reviews and

compliance.

• Funding for science team is ending. Big push to generate derived data products for this release; it’s now or never.

• MRO – Release 9, June 8, 2009.• Both HiRISE and CRISM expect to re-release RDR products

at some point.


Mars Mission Summary: Missions In Development

• MSL• Launch is delayed to late 2011.• Archive development in FY09 has slowed due to reduced

MSL staff. • Data Archive Working Group meetings continue bimonthly,

working on setting schedule and completing agreements with teams (ICD for DAN and imaging instruments).

• Geosciences Node will develop a MSL Analyst’s Notebook.


Mars Mission Summary: Missions In Development

• Yinghuo-1 Chinese Mars orbiter on Phobos-Grunt• Launch scheduled for October 2009.• Yinghuo-1 Science PI, Dr. Zhao Hua, wants to work with

PDS through Geosciences Node contacts at Shandong University to create a PDS-compliant archive.

• A data archiving workshop will take place in July 2009 at Shandong University, attended by Arvidson and Yinguo-1 instrument PIs.


MESSENGER Summary

• Release 4, April 15, 2009• EDR (raw) data from Mercury Flyby 2 for all instruments• CDR (calibrated) data from MAG, MDIS, and MASCS• Status of Geosciences Node archives for this release:

• Gamma Ray Spectrometer EDR received and validated• Neutron Spectrometer EDR received and validated• X-Ray Spectrometer EDR received and validated• Mercury Laser Altimeter EDR received and validated• MASCS Spectrometer EDR and CDR received, in validation• Radio Science EDR received, in validation

• MESSENGER policy requires PDS to wait until scheduled release date before making data public, because of journal publications also being released on that day.

• Access data products from across PDS through a common interface

• Mercury Version (MESSENGER)• Lunar Version (Clementine/LP, and

LRO when data are released)• MGS MOC and MOLA Datasets • MOLA Altimetry Query Tool• Google Earth and ArcGIS Integration• CRISM Web Site Integration


What’s New in User Services: Analyst’s Notebook

• Phoenix AN released Dec. 23, 2008, in conjunction with first data release:http://an.rsl.wustl.edu/phx

• Follows AN for MER: Explore data in context of mission plans and events, with multiple approaches for selecting and viewing desired data.

• More Analyst’s Notebooks coming• Apollo 16 AN now in review. Draft shown at

LPSC. Public version ready about 5/1/09 and remaining notebooks by about 9/1/09.

• MSL and LCROSS Notebooks are planned.

Geosciences Node Presence at LPSC, March 23-27, 2009

• Geosciences Node booth equipped with two computers for hands-on demonstrations of node website and data services

• CRISM Data Users’ Workshop • Co-sponsored by CRISM Team and Geosciences Node

personnel.• About 100 registered participants.• Exercises used data from the PDS CRISM archive.• CRISM experts were available in the Geosciences Node

booth to provide additional help to CRISM users.• Workshop materials and user forum available on

Geosciences Node website.
