ANNALES ILISTOIÍK'O-NATURALES MUSE] NATIONALIS HTJNGARICI Tomus 68. Budapest 1976. Geometrinae and Sterrhinae from Mongolia (Lepidoptera, Geometridae)* by A . M . VOJNITS. Budapest Abstract — Of the 23 species discussed, new to the Mongolian fauna are : Euchloris aty che PRT., Calot hysanis amata recompta PRT., C. par alias PRT., Scopula imper sonata macescens BTLU., S. arenosaria STGR., S. submutata TR., Sterrha rufaria HBN., S. vulpi- naria H.-SCH. The species impararia GUEN. is reallocated from Dyschloropsis WARE, to Holoterpna PÜNG. (comb. n.). The material collected by DR. Z. KASZAB in Mongolia and discussed in the present paper did not contain new species or subspecies, but several were found to be new to the Mongolian fauna. These are Euchloris atyche PRT., Calothysanis amata recompta PRT., Scopula impersonata macescens BTLR., 8. arenosaria STGR., 8. sub- mutata TT., Sterrha rufaria HBN., S. vulpinaria H.-SCH. A valuable part of the collection is the series of Rhodostrophia jacularia HBN., originating from various localities. This material may also serve as a basis for a future detailed elaboration of the species, appearing in highly diverse forms. The smallest to greater series of very rare species, e. g. of Holoterpna impararia GUEN. and Euchloris atyche PRT., are also worthy of mention. I. GEOMETRINAE 1. 4. Holoterpna imparar ia ( G U E N É E , 1857) comb. n .

Spec. Gén. Lép. I . , p . 354.

The ve ry rare and local species was based on specimens f rom the U r a l . La te r i t was collected a t the Zaisan Lake, a n d i n the A l a - T a u and Ul iassuta i regions.

The alar expanse of the series f r o m Mongol ia is 25-29 m m (average value: 26,5 m m ) . Most of the specimens have more or less lost, du r ing the softening process of prepara t ion , the green color of the fore wings and they t u r n e d a shiny yel lowish. On ly some of t h e m show a yel lowish green hue and a green thorax .

The species impararia G U E N . was relegated by P R O U T (1915) to the genus Dyschloropsis W A R R . , a mono typ i ca l genus ha rd ly di f fer ing f rom Holoterpna P Ü N G .

The labia l palps of impararia are on ly s l i g t h l y shorter and the shape a n d margins of the wings differs on ly m i n u t e l y from those of the t w o Palaearctic species (dia-grapharia P Ü N G . and pruinosata S T G R . ) assigned to Holoterpna P Ü N G . wh ich , i n m y opin ion , is insufficient to creata and to ma in t a in a d is t inct genus for the species i n question.

5. T h a l e r a c h l o r o s a r i a GRAESER, 1890 (Berl. e. Z., 33: 81 ) - -The species, nearly related to Thalera fimbrialis SCOP., was collected heretofore in SE Siberia, Korea, and Nor th China. I n agreement w i t h WTARNECKE and GRAESER, PROUT (1935) considered chlorosaria GRAES, a distinct species on account of differences in pattern. — The Mongolian specimens are rather large. The average alar expanse is 28 mm, the extreme values being 25-32 mm. After preparation (setting), the basic colour is a pale greenish yellow, the white transverse stripes are broad and only weakly sinuous. The reddish brown lines of the cilia are striking.

6. H e m i s t o l a c h r y s o p r a s a r i a l i s s a s PROUT, 1912 (Gen. Ins., 129: 227)—The most striking characteristic of ssp. lissas PROUT, representing chrysoprasaria ESP. in Central Asia, is the rather rounded instead of angulate hind wings. 1. R h o d o s t r o p h i a j a c u l a r i a HÜBNER, 1827 (Smmlg. Eur . Schmett. Geom., p. 431) — A n extremely varying species, ranging mostly i n the southern parts of Siberia and in Mongolia. I t is the animals collected in Archangaj aimak which mostly correspond to the original description. These are rather large, w i t h an average alar expanse of 28 mm, the basic colour of the fore wings pale yellowish brown, the transverse stripes sharp, dark brown, and backed by white lines. The hind wings are very light, nearly white basally, the marginal area slightly yellowish or brownish, the transverse stripe pale brown. The underside of the wings are mat yellow, w i t h the pattern shining through. The specimens collected in the Changaj range (Archangaj aimak) are also similar, but those found in the Bajanchongor aimak exhibit some differences. I n some of these exemplars the basic colour is greyish and the transverse stripes are broader. One of them bears SHELJUZKO'S holotype label "forma obsoleta", though i t is manifestly an individual aberration, unworthy of any special interest. The specimens originating from the East Gobi and from the South Gobi aimaks are lighter w i t h a less sharply defined pattern ; two among the latter ones are nearly white. Exemplars from Chentej aimak are generally slightly smaller, w i t h more elongated wings and a greyish violet irroration. The large series, originating from Cojbalsan aimak presumably represents ssp. minor ALPHÉRAKY (Rom. Mém. Lép., 6: 71). They are quite small, w i t h elongated wings, darker and grayer in colour. And there occur i n many localities specimens w i t h a strikingly red or rufous besic colour and a reddish brown pattern. Neither of the above forms showed any difference in the genital structure.

6. S c o p u l a r u b i g i n a t a (HUFNAGEL, 1769) (Berlinisches Magazin etc., I V . , p. 610) — The species, ranging from Western Europe to East Asia, is highly varying, especially as regards colour range. The taxonomie value of forms based mainly on these colour differences are extremely questionable, as already stated by PROUT (1935) : , , Ich bin vom Wert der zahlreichen Namen, die man an Formen dieser unkonstanten A r t vergeben hat, nicht ganz überzeugt' ' .

I n m y opinion, the Mongolian populations are relegable to the nominate subspecies, though there appeal - among the collected specimens w i t h a violet sheen on a greyish brown, yellowish brown, and pink basic colour as well as exemplars w i t h a violet-rosy hue.

11. S c o p u l a s u b m u t a t a (TREITSCHKE, 1828) (Die Schmetterlinge von Europa, VI(2) : 277) — Several geographical races are known of this species ranging in South Europe, Nor th Africa and the Near East. Two of the Mongolian specimens rather resemble the subspecies taurüibanotica W E H R L I , described from Libanon, while another exemplar agrees w i t h the nominate form. Assumably therefore, the form displaying a sharp pattern, hitherto regarded as ssp. taurüibanotica W E H R L I , occurs together w i t h the nominate subspecies and accordingly cannot be considered a geographic race (ssp. taurüibanotica W E H R L I s y n . n . ) . S t e r r h a m u r i c a t a (HUFNAGEL, 1769) (Berlinisches Magazin etc. I V . , p . 606, 625) — The populations occurring i n China, Japan, Korea and East Siberia of the species ranging from Europe to Palaearctic Asia were assigned by STERNECK to the subspecies minor STR., w i t h the remark tha t the respective specimens are essentially smaller than those representing the nominate form. This holds also for the exemplar collected in Mongolia, but a single specimen is insufficient to decide its subspecific relegation.
