Geography teacher, Myriam Mansour, receives the 2016-2017 Vanier College Teaching Excellence Award
An outstanding teacher inspires both students and colleagues and this is certainly the case of Myriam Mansour, the recipient of the 2016-2017 Vanier College Teaching Excellence Award.
Throughout the 20 years that Myriam Mansour has taught at Vanier College, creativity and caring have been at the heart of her teaching and the projects she has initiated or supervised. In 2014, Myriam worked with the French Department’s Catherine Duranleau to develop Le Nord: Territoires et Imaginaires – a course that culminated with a 9-day trip to explore the Quebec North Shore. In 2016, she teamed up with Brandee Diner and Quentin van Ginhoven from Environmental and Wildlife Management to develop The Tropics: Opportunities and Challenges a universal complementary course centered on sustainability that also incorporated a 9-day trip to Belize. “Myriam’s enthusiasm for teaching, her passion for her subject, her boundless energy and her generosity of spirit are what make her such a successful and well-loved teacher,” says colleague Lourdes Meana who supported Myriam’s nomination for the Teaching Excellence Award. Congratulations to Myriam Mansour. Read the full news release.

Music
Well now, after last week’s exceptional performance by retired piano teacher Norair Artinian, it is time to come down to the Auditorium for
an outstanding show by Vanier Music students in the final year of their three-year Professional Music and Song Techniques program. This will
be the first of four free recitals by the two 2017-2018 Jazz Improvisation groups directed by the inimitable Nick Di Tomaso.
What—you slyly but justifiably ask—will you hear at this recital? Oh, just a few rare tunes by little-known artists such as Thelonious Monk,
Destiny’s Child, Linda Ronstadt, Whitney Houston, Carlos Santana, and some kind of bird group (called The Eagles or something like that).
As always, this recital is free and is open to all, and quite clearly the music is going to be fantastic—all part of the friendly service courtesy of
your generous and talented Music Department.
So, this Wednesday, September 27th at 12:30 in the Auditorium, don’t forget to join us for a wonderful musical experience.

More kudos for the student trip to Austria and Italy in May entitled “Moral Responsibility and Global Citizenship”
In case you missed it, there was a very positive article in the
September 13th edition of the Suburban Newspaper written by
the editor Beryl Wajsman, on the Vanier student study trip
entitled “Moral Responsibility and Global Citizenship” that took
place in May.
As you may remember, the trip was organized to mark the 25th
anniversary of Vanier’s Annual Symposium on the Holocaust and Genocide, which is organized in partnership with the Holocaust Education
and Genocide Prevention Foundation.
Do check out the article (“Vanier’s Mission for Morality”) at: http://www.thesuburban.com/news/city_news/vanier-s-mission-for-
morality/article_40fca29d-cad6-5035-82c8-ed26fd39cdd0.html
As well, Kelly Purdy who went on the trip wrote a report on it in the August 21 issue of Intercom if you want to read that as well. The trip
and the Symposium were both organized with support from the Vanier College Foundation.

Vanier College Humanities Symposium: Call for Presenters
CALL FOR PRESENTERS
Humanities Symposium, February 5th-9th, 2018
The Humanities Department at Vanier College is hosting its 7th annual Humanities Symposium, to be held during the week of Monday,
February 5th to Friday, February 9th, 2018. The symposium committee invites scholarly, academic, professional, and artistic expressions on
the theme of “Beauty.”
Theme Description
“Beauty will be convulsive, or it will not be at all,” declared the founder of the surrealist movement, André Breton, in his novel, Nadja (1928).
This was not merely an eccentric provocation. Indeed, the statement embodies the modernist spirit which, from dance and music to art,
architecture, and literature, set out to dismantle the classical idea of beauty as something that had to do with order, harmony, and reason,
and that was supposed to be pleasing to the senses. Neither was this merely a youthful revolt against tradition. The modernists wanted to
draw attention to the fact that classical beauty had increasingly come to appear meaningless: detached from old metaphysical ideals and
incapable of responding to a world permeated by violence, injustice, and exploitation. Today, despite the enduring lack of agreement
concerning the meaning or value of the concept, we nevertheless continue to be fascinated by beauty, and our responses to it reveal much
about who we are. Ideas about beauty permeate our explicit or implicit, conscious or unconscious notions of sex, gender, class, race, ethnicity,
health, or power, and today’s beauty industry is not only unprecedented in scale, but also in its function as a kind of moral, social, political, or
economic imperative hardly anyone can escape. So how should we think about beauty in the 21st century? How should we speak about this
seemingly indefinable quality that, all too often, can feel at once oppressive and rare?
Submission Criteria
The theme of beauty is not bound to any particular field of inquiry and invites analyses and interpretation from art, music, cinema, literature,
architecture, design, gender and sexuality, media studies, ethnic studies, cultural studies, religion, history, and science to name only a few
possible modes of inquest. We invite individuals from a multitude of backgrounds to freely appropriate the theme of beauty, in order to
develop presentations according to their acumen and expertise.
Abstracts should be roughly 50 - 75 words and ideally should not exceed 250 words. Please send abstracts to the symposium committee, c/o
the following email: [email protected].
Submission deadline for abstracts is Friday, October 20th, 2017.
All presentations will be held in the Vanier College Auditorium. Presenters will be expected to speak for approximately 40 minutes and allow 10-15 minutes for questions and discussion. Audio-visual technologies are available upon request. Questions and concerns pertaining to any aspect of the Humanities Symposium should be addressed to David Koloszyc at [email protected]

Special Care Counsellors Walk for the Cause!
Photos from Parkinson Journey Montreal-Laval, 2017
In Special Care Counselling, we consider community work, volunteerism and activism as a fundamental piece in helping the fight against many
of the physical and cognitive diseases and illnesses that affect the clients we work with.
As such, on Sunday September 17, approximately a dozen Special Care Counselling students and teachers walked and volunteered for the
annual Parkinson's Journey Montreal-Laval http://parkinsonquebec.ca/en/activite/parkinsons-journey-montreal-laval at Lafontaine Park,
raising awareness for a neurological disorder causing reduced dopamine in the brain and affecting mainly the movements of those affected
(parkinsonquebec.ca, 2017).
On October 15th at 10:30, the students and faculty will again hit the Montreal streets at the Montreal Walk for Mental Health
www.mtlwalks.com in Philips Square. We encourage other Vanier health care faculty and students to join us in helping raise funds and
awareness by participating alongside our team as the subject of Mental Wellness concerns us all, with mental illness affecting 1 in 5 Canadians
at some point over their lifetime, with 18% of Quebecers currently having a mental health disorder (www.mtlwalks.com/mental-health, 2017).
Additionally, if you'd like to volunteer for the event please email [email protected].
We hope to see you there...we'll be the ones with the big red Vanier banner, all welcome!
To join us please email Dayna Morrow [email protected] or Rita Bonar [email protected] in the Special Care Counselling
Department.

Anxiety and Depression Screening Day
The Vanier College Counselling Center would like to invite the Vanier College community to participate in our annual Anxiety and Depression
Screening Day, which will take place on Wednesday, October 4, 2017.
Counselling Center staff and third-year students of the Special Care Counselling program will be available, with the professional staff
conducting the screenings and the students providing information and support.
Anxiety and Depression Screening Day is an opportunity to call attention to the prevalence of mental illness in our society and to educate
people about signs and symptoms. Further, it provides an excellent opportunity to inform our community of the availability of effective
intervention and to diminish the perceived social stigma of talking about it or seeking help.
Students suffering from mental health problems often experience serious difficulty concentrating on their studies, to the point of failing
courses and/or withdrawing from school. In addition to seriously undermining academic performance, it can lead to alcohol and drug use, and
even suicide. Despite this, mental illnesses are treatable.
Initiated by AMI-Quebec, Depression Screening Day is a joint collaboration of hospitals, CSSS’s, CEGEP’s universities and community
organizations.
Anxiety and depression screening at Vanier will take place on Wednesday, October 4, 2017 in the Carrefour and the N-Building Lobby from
10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Publications, handouts and other information on numerous mental health topics will be available in the Student Mall. Please encourage
students to participate.

Guidance Counsellor Information Sessions On September 14th and 15th, we welcomed guidance counsellors from French and English high schools to our annual information sessions.
Thirty-eight counsellors from the French sector attended on the 14th and seventy from the English sector on the 15th.
This year the sessions were held in the new TASC area of the Library and it proved to be a good choice with counsellors and presenters.
Our new Academic Dean, Annie-Claude Banville welcomed the counsellors and spoke briefly of revisions to certain programs as well as a few
new initiatives. Giovanna Arcuri, the External Liaison Officer did an excellent job in the role of MC.
We were fortunate to have Coordinators from Building Systems Engineering Technology, Environmental and Wildlife Management,
Explorations, Industrial Electronics, Liberal Arts and Nursing who gave very interesting and informative presentations. Representatives from
Access for Students with Disabilities and the Language School provided the guidance counsellors with important information to bring back to
their students.
There is always interest from the counsellors on admissions stats and the Registrar along Admissions gave the counsellors a breakdown of our
enrollment numbers and answered general questions from the counsellors.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the sessions either with presentations or by merely attending in order to meet with the counsellors
afterwards. It all added to the success of both sessions.
