    YOUR QUESTIONS

1 Why might the people of the Maldives become environmental

    refugees?

2 Describe and explain how rising sea levels are related to global

    warming.

On this spread youll learn about rising sea levels, and how this is going

to affect people living in coastal zones.

7.7Rising sea levels in the Maldives

The Maldives government makes a point

Tourist paradise but for how long? One of the many

    islands in the Maldives.

    Whats happening?

Sea levels are rising and islands in the Pacific Ocean are already beginning to

disappear. Scientists have suggested that sea levels are rising as a result of global

warming, and will continue to do so for the rest of this century. But they dont know

by how much estimates range from 30 cm to 1.4 m.

As average global temperatures continue to rise, the:

polar ice sheets and mountain glaciers around the world are melting, leading to

    more water in the sea

water in the sea gets warmer and, as it does, it expands

... and thats whats causing rising sea levels.

What will the affects be on the Maldives?

As sea levels rise, both people and the environment will be affected.

Coral reefs will die as theyre bleached and the water gets deeper.

The ecosystem associated with the reefs will be lost.

People will be forced to leave their homes and possibly become environmental

refugees. The total population is about 400 000.

The traditional way of life will be lost.

In an economy dependent on tourism, rising sea levels could put an end to the

tourist industry and bankrupt the country.

... and, of course, the whole country might actually disappear underwater!

The Maldives contribution to global warming is small, yet its suffering the worst

consequences. It will need international help to cope with the impacts.

    MPs meet underwater!

The government of the Maldives held an underwater

cabinet meeting in October 2009. W hy? To show

the world the threat they faced from global warming.

President Mohamed Nasheed and his cabinet signed adocument calling for global cuts in carbon emissions.

The government of the Maldives says that the country

will almost certainly be completely underwater if sea

    levels rise as predicted.

President Nasheeds plan is to buy a new homeland

for his people perhaps in India or Sri Lanka using

money from tourism, in case the entire population is

    forced to become environmental refugees.

    The Maldives

The Maldives is a small country, made up of over 1000

islands in the Indian Ocean. Its the lowest country in

the world with its highest point only 2.4 metres above

    sea level.

The islands stunning scenery, clear blue tropical

seas and white beaches make them an ideal holiday

location. Tourism is very important to the Maldives

economy providing almost 60% of its GDP.

Environmental refugees are people forced to move

away from their home area because of changes in

environmental or climatic conditions, such as drought,

    flooding, deforestation.

    Dhaka, the capital of

    Bangladesh, is used to

    flooding during the monsoon

    season. But the city, like

most of the country, is very

    low-lying and could be

    under even greater risk from

    rising sea levels. Dhaka

    has a population of about

    13 million and the fastest

    population growth of any city

    in the world.

    your planet

    A one-metre rise in sea

level worldwide woulddisplace about 100 million

people in Asia; 14 million in

    Europe; and eight million

    each in Africa and

    South America.

    your planet

    One in ten people

    worldwide live less

    than 10 metres above

    sea level and near

    the coast.

    And elsewhere ?

For people living near the coast and in low-lying

areas rising sea levels could be catastrophic if land is

permanently flooded on a massive scale. Places at risk

    include:

many small islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans

The Netherlands, where 27% of the land is belowsea level

    Bangladesh, a very low-lying country with a

    population of 156 million

cities like London, New York and Shanghai, which

would have to spend billions on flood defences

The Fens and Essex in eastern England.

3 Draw up a table with four columns headed Economic, Social, Political,

Environmental. Classify the impacts of rising sea levels on the

    Maldives under each heading.

Hint:Classify means you have to sort them into the right category

    economic, social and so on.

    7 THE COASTAL ZONE

1 At the simplest level: The people of the Maldives

might become environmental refugees because the

islands could be completely drowned by rising sea

levels. Stronger answers might include: definition

    and/or understanding of environmental refugees

    and how it might apply to the people of the Maldives;

the link between the threat to the Maldives and

global warming; the low-lying geography of the

    Maldives.

    In brief

Students learn about rising sea levels the causes and potential impacts, with

specific reference to the vulnerable Maldives.

    Ideas for a starter

1 Introduce the following facts to your class: more than 50% of the worlds

population lives within 60 km of the coast; many of the worlds poor are crowdedinto low-lying coastal areas. Get students thinking about what might happen if sea

    levels rise.

2 With the student book shut, ask students what they know about the Maldives.

    Ideas for plenaries

1 Question 3 from the student book. Show the table on the board, and complete it

    as a whole-class activity.

2 Tell students to imagine they live in the Maldives. Ask: How do they feel? How do

they view their future? Are they angry? If so, who with? If not, why not? Would theybe happy to move to a new homeland?

    Further class and homework activity

Ask students to do further research on either the Maldives or another location

    vulnerable to rising sea levels, and to make brief case study notes, perhaps under thefollowing headings: Location; Basic physical geography; Basic human geography;

Whats happening; Causes; Impacts; Possible responses and/or solutions.

The impacts of rising sea levels on the Maldives

    Economic Social Political Environmental

On this spread you will learn why an earthquake hit Haiti and what the

impacts were. Why was this disaster so severe?

Haiti has had earthquakes before, but the epicentre of this one was very close

to the capital. It was also a shallow earthquake and a big one magnitude 7.0

on the Richter scale. Because it happened close to the surface the shaking was

more violent. The buildings in Haiti were weak and not built to withstand a strong

    earthquake.

A major reason why millions of people suffered is because Haiti is an LEDC. Huge

sums of money had already been spent rebuilding after Hurricanes Gustav, Hanna

and Ike caused 800 deaths in 2008. There simply werent the resources to be well

    prepared.

    The world responds

Haitis president quickly issued a desperate plea to world leaders,

asking them to send money and supplies. Governments, celebrities

and members of the public rallied round to help the victims:

    Haitis response

Because they lacked money and equipment, the people of Haiti were

very limited in how they could help after the earthquake. They could:

    A city destroyed

million people living in Haitis capital, Port au Prince,

been reduced to rubble. The hunt for survivors was

called off ten days later. Darlene Etienne was one of

The average discharge of the River Amazon is 219 000 m3/sec. By

comparison, the discharge of the River Nile is 2830 m3/sec, and the River

Thames is just 65.8 m 3/sec. 1 m3/sec is roughly equivalent in weight to a

    Factor Afect on river discharge

Distance downstreamIn humid environments, such as the UK, river discharge increases with distance downstream. The main

reason or this is the addition o water to the river channel as smaller tributaries join the main river.

    Climatic characteristics

River discharge usually refects precipitation, both in terms o its amount and its seasonal pattern. Snowall

results in a time delay, because the water is stored until the snow melts. When it melts, there is a surge in

discharge. Other aspects o the climate, such as temperature, are important in aecting evaporation rates

    and vegetation growth.

    Land use

Aorestation (tree planting) tends to reduce the discharge and make it more constant. Urbanisation oten

increases the discharge, because water is transerred rapidly over impermeable suraces, such as tarmac

and concrete and through pipes and sewers.

Water abstraction (removal)The abstraction o water or domestic use and the irrigation o crops reduces discharge. This can be

seasonal, with a greater demand or water in the summer months.

    Channel modications

Constructing a reservoir regulates the discharge and makes it more constant. The river channel itsel might

also be modied to reduce the food risk, e.g. channel straightening and enlargement tend to increase

discharge, while river restoration and the creation o food storage areas can reduce discharge because

they encourage small-scale fooding in a rivers headwaters.

    THE COASTAL ZONE

    NIndia

    India

In an economy dependent on tourism, rising sea levels could put an e nd to the

tourist industry and bankrupt the country.

... and, of course, the whole country might actually disappear underwater!

The Maldives contribution to global warming is small, yet its suffering the worstconsequences. It will need international help to cope with the impacts.

    MPs meet underwater!

The government of the Maldives held an underwater

cabinet meeting in October 2009. Why? To show

the world the threat they faced from global warming.

President Mohamed Nasheed and his cabinet signed a

document calling for global cuts in carbon emissions.

The government of the Maldives says that the country

will almost certainly be completely underwater if sea

    levels rise as predicted.

President Nasheeds plan is to buy a new homeland

for his people perhaps in India or Sri Lanka using

money from tourism, in case the entire population is

    forced to become environmental refugees.

    The Maldives

The Maldives is a small country, made up of over 1000

islands in the Indian Ocean. Its the lowest country in

the world with its highest point only 2.4 metres above

    sea level.

The islands stunning scenery, clear blue tropical

seas and white beaches make them an ideal holiday

location. Tourism is very important to the Maldives

economy providing almost 60% of its GDP.

Environmental refugees are people forced to move

away from their home area because of changes in

environmental or climatic conditions, such as drought,

    flooding, deforestation.

    Dhaka, the capital of

    Bangladesh, is used to

    flooding during the monsoon

    season. But the city, like

most of the country, is very

    low-lying and could be

    under even greater risk from

    rising sea levels. Dhaka

    has a population of about

    13 million and the fastest

population growth of any cityin the world.

    your planet

    A one-metre rise in sea

    level worldwide would

    displace about 100 million

people in Asia; 14 million in

    Europe; and eight million

    each in Africa and

    South America.

    your planet

    One in ten people

    worldwide live less

    than 10 metres above

    sea level and near

    the coast.
