Geneseo High School March 2017 Geneseo High School has some student pio- neers who are a part of a new educational ex- perience at GHS. The program is called Per- sonal Learning Plans (PLP). PLP’s are based on the educational philosophy of blended learning. Blended learning is a formal educa- tion program in which a student learns, at least in part, through an alternative setting or online delivery of content and instruction, with some element of student control over time, place, path, or pace. When a student has an idea or passion that they want to pursue and learn more about that is not available within the classrooms and structure of GHS, they approach their Counselor about how to modify their class schedule to accomplish their goal. The stu- dents create a plan with their Counselor, in- cluding the specifics and details on what the student will do and when. The student then periodically meets with their Counselor to talk about how the experience is going and if they need any further assistance. Many of the students create journals, portfolios, and other forms of documentation. The students create “holes” in their GHS class schedule to spend time on their PLP. Many students leave the GHS campus for part of the day to work on their PLP with the businesses, organizations, or individuals that are helping them research their passions. Some of our students do a PLP for a se- mester, while other PLP’s run for the entire school year. Right now, only juniors and se- niors are piloting this new educational expe- rience, but in the future it might be expanded to underclassmen. Students earn an elective credit by participating in a PLP, and it is graded as pass / fail. On Thursday, March 9th, the students who participated in the PLP pilot program will be in the GHS library during our ASAP period to talk to other interested students. We are doing this as we begin the master schedule design process so that students can find out more about this unique educational experi- ence. The PLP students will also be in the GHS library from 5:30 p.m. until approxi- mately 6:15 p.m. on March 9th to talk to school board members before they go to the District office for their regularly scheduled

Geneseo High School has some student pio-neers who are a part of a new educational ex-perience at GHS. The program is called Per-sonal Learning Plans (PLP). PLP’s are based on the educational philosophy of blended learning. Blended learning is a formal educa-tion program in which a student learns, at least in part, through an alternative setting or online delivery of content and instruction, with some element of student control over time, place, path, or pace.

!When a student has an idea or passion that they want to pursue and learn more about that is not available within the classrooms and structure of GHS, they approach their Counselor about how to modify their class schedule to accomplish their goal. The stu-dents create a plan with their Counselor, in-cluding the specifics and details on what the student will do and when. The student then periodically meets with their Counselor to

talk about how the experience is going and if they need any further assistance. Many of the students create journals, portfolios, and other forms of documentation. !The students create “holes” in their GHS class schedule to spend time on their PLP. If any community member would like to find out about the PLP program, or blended learning as a whole, the students, a Counselor, and administrators also will be there at that time to answer any questions. !!StudentSpotlights:• CongratulationstothefollowingstudentsforbeingnominatedforStudentoftheQuarterforquarterthree:GabrielleAllen,ConnerAlwood,SlainaAnthony,KyAriano,BridgettBailey,JerryBallard,KatherineBeeson,AndrewBenhart,TreyBlank,ChristianBooth,JosephineBrown,DanielleClary,EmmaCorgan,RachelDaniels,SallyDeBrock,JoshuaDecker,IanEllis,TylerFlowers,LindseyFrancque,ZoeyGomez,CaitlinGorge,Jes-sicaGreen,HeathHenderson,LukeHenkhaus,LexeeHodge,BraedenKeller,MorganLaxton,TimothyLehman,Jr.,DavyenMayer,MichaelaMcCright,MatthewMcDonald,BrandonModesto,CamarieMueller-McBride,KelseyOlson,JillianPayeur,KatlynPhillips,KendraRa-ley,BrandonRamos,KyleighRetzlaff,DanielRobinson,WillSammons,CharlesSchlindwein,NoahSchmedding,KyleSellers,NathanSoria,CarterStephenson,JaneThomas,MaryThomas,ToriTownsend,ChaseVanWynsberghe,JerryVerdick,TuckerZiegenhorn.!!ClassroomHappenings:• Mrs.HamiltonandMrs.Woolsey’sstu-dentsexperiencedBreakoutEDUintheirclasses.Studentsweregivenavarietyofproblemstosolve,someofwhichweredirectlyrelatedtowhattheyhavelearnedthisyear,whileotherproblems

The exact dates are still unknown at the time of publi-cation of this newsletter. During that piece of the construction, there will not be any access to Circle Drive, however, we will have some short-term visitor parking spaces designated on State Street. Please be mindful of this if you are coming to the school in the next cou-ple of weeks.

As the work continues on the many parts of Project Leaf, there are more and more visible signs of progress, with the pre-cast cement walls being erected, as well as the steel roof

structure. There are more steel studs up in the area of the new information commons. There is now steel to begin the roof on the new auditorium, and the last pre-cast walls will be put in by the first week of April. There has been a lot of electrical, HVAC, and plumbing work being done in the theater area and the new band commons. Cement was poured for the apron to allow for the erection of the bleachers later this month.
