Dear Friends,

Within a few days of my joining Bridge Communities in November 2011, I came to understand that Bridge could fully support its claim to be a “grassroots organization.” In being grassroots, Bridge has built an incredible foundation for its future, because of you, our donors, volunteers, and community partners who are so committed to our

mission and have a vision of what Bridge can still become. I continue to be reminded of the foundation at every turn. When I meet mentors who have been with us non-stop for 20 years, I see the foundation. When small children sell lemonade on the sidewalk for Bridge’s benefit during the Garden Walk, I see the foundation. When many hundreds of teens swarm to our parking lot on a cold Saturday

night in November for Sleep Out Saturday, I see the foundation. And when donors respond to the call year after year, generously and enthusiastically, I see the foundation. Bridge co-founder Mark Milligan recounts the stories of many of the children in homeless families from the early days of Bridge. These children, now grown, come back to us to report on what a difference Bridge has

made in their lives. They have finished college and participate fully in the mainstream economy and in society. They have achieved the highest success by breaking the cycle of poverty. They are the product of the early days of Bridge Communities, touched by dozens of people who were brought together in a single network to support their families. Bridge Communities is facing DuPage County’s family homelessness crisis head on with Investing in Homes +

Hope. This ambitious $5.5 million campaign will enable Bridge to acquire five additional apartment buildings, allowing us to help 40% more families cross the bridge to self-sufficiency. The Campaign also builds a $2 million endowment that will return revenues for vital program enhancements. Through your incredible generosity, Investing in Homes + Hope has raised $4.7 million in cash and pledges since launching in January 2011 – thank you. ...Bridge attracted us because of their principle of promoting client self-sufficiency. So many programs (most government programs and some private programs) create dependency and punish independence. Because Bridge’s goal is independence for clients, we know Bridge is a local, measurable place to invest a portion of God has entrusted to us.

I t’s long been Bridge’s vision to create job readiness

training programs, and because of you, that vision became reality. Thanks to a generous gift to the Investing in Homes + Hope campaign, Bridge’s employment team held its first successful job readiness training program series at the Glendale Heights LRC. The class was specifically tailored to meet the

needs of the eight clients who participated in the four-week training session. That’s eight clients empowered to enter the workforce with increased skills and knowledge to find better jobs and create better futures. Thanks to your contribution, three of those clients have gotten new or better jobs as a result of that training.

W hen 4th grader Tommy and his family came to

Bridge, he lacked confidence and skill in reading, testing at a second grade reading level. Reluctantly, he began twice-weekly tutoring sessions with Lindsay. At mid-term, Tommy’s reading scores increased fifty percent! Your donation and

his tutor’s help strengthened Tommy’s reading skills and built his confidence. He’s now reading to his little brother, becoming a role model and tutor in his own right, even exclaiming to Lindsay, “I love reading!” Tommy couldn’t have done it without you.

Megan’s husband was accused of a crime

and fled the country, leaving her with a mortgage, bills, children, and nowhere to turn. Fortunately, she found Bridge, where she and her boys were welcomed with open arms. Megan said her mentors made her “realize that any

helpful deed, no matter how small, makes waves in the right direction. I learned that it is OK to ask for help. I could not possibly verbalize all my mentors have encompassed in my life, but I can say I have gained strength and pride…I have been enriched through my mentors’ devotion, and I am now a better person for it.”

Seven-year-old son, Luke and his dad, Darryl, rose to the

challenge set out by their church to use a $100 gift to benefit the lives of disadvantaged children in their community. Through a series of creative fundraising activities that included a lemonade stand, yard work, and soliciting direct donations, Darryl and Luke raised over $1,200 to give non-provided school supplies – think flash drives, calculators and paper products – to Bridge kids. They built on that success by handing out the supplies and meeting the families at Bridge’s annual back-to-school ice cream social. “I am happy we were able to help some of the families but believe that this activity meant just as much to me as it did the families we helped,” said Darryl.
