What is Telecommunication ?y Telecommunication is the transmission of information over
significant distances to communicate.
y
In earlier times, telecommunications involved the use of visualsignals, such as beacons, smoke signals, semaphore telegraphs,
signal flags, and optical heliographs, or audio messages via
coded drumbeats, lung-blown horns, or sent by loud whistles.
y In the modern age of electricity and electronics,
telecommunications now also includes the use of electrical
devices such as telegraphs, telephones, and teleprinters, the use
of radio and microwave communications, as well as fiber
optics and their associated electronics, plus the use of the
orbiting satellites and the Internet.

P urpose of a Communication
System:y Deliver as much information as possible from the
source to the destination (capacity). Capacity may be
measured in bits per second (bps) or in call capacity.Information maybe of different natures, such as voice, video, or data produced by a computer.
y Deliver information in shortest time (delay). Delaysare measured in milliseconds or in round trip delay.
y Reduce errors in delivery of information (error detection/correction). Errors can be measured as BitError Rate (BER) or Frame Error Rate (FER).

Wireless Communications
y W ith the invention of the radio, expensive cabling
requirements were eliminated and transoceanic wireless communication became possible.
y In radio communication the information signal isconverted into an electromagnetic wave form and is
broadcast in space using radiating devices known asantennas.
