Tel.: +44 161 661 42 00 /01 www.cervantes.es www.manchester.cervantes.es

How many courses and levels are there?

General Spanish courses are divided into 5 levels, in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL):

A1: Elementary 1 and 2 (60 hours) A2: Elementary 3, 4 and 5 (90 hours) B1: Intermediate from 1 to 4 (120 hours) B2: from 1 to 5 (150 hours) C1: Higher from 1 to 6 (180 hours)

Classes in Catalan, Basque and Galician are also available.

How many students are there per course?

There is a maximum of 16 students per class. In class we follow a communicative approach (during the lessons our students work in pairs, in small groups and together as a class) and Spanish is the main language. Courses aim to:

- Teach modern and contemporary Spanish, for students to grasp Spanish and Latin

American culture and life. - Develop students´ skills to ensure they are fully competent at their level. - Motivate students to study independently to develop their skills further. - Encourage teamwork and group work.

What type of Spanish is taught?

Instituto Cervantes aims to teach Spanish by sharing its rich diversity and taking into account the different varieties existing in the Hispano-American community. We recruit teachers from different Spanish regions and from different Latin American countries to familiarise students with a range of linguistic varieties and accents.

Will I get a certificate?

At the end of each level, that is, Elementary 5, Intermediate 4, Advanced 5 and Superior 6, teachers offer individual feedback. A Certificate of Attendance is available at the end of the course upon request and payment. You can also register for the DELE exams (Diploma of Spanish as a Foreign Language) which are issued by the Spanish Ministry of Education, whether you are studying at the center or not.

Tel.: +44 161 661 42 00 /01 www.cervantes.es www.manchester.cervantes.es

What is the DELE?

The DELE Spanish certificates are issued by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Vocational

Training. Exams are offered from level A1 to C2 of the Common European Framework of

Reference for Languages: Teaching, Learning and Evaluation (CEFR). The candidate decides

which level they wish to take.

DELE certificates are internationally recognised, they certify the level of proficiency reached by a

candidate regardless of where and when they have completed their studies.

Dele examns have three examination session per year and candidates will attend the written

and oral exam at our centre.

In our center we have three sessions: April, July and November and we offer all levels (A1, A2,

B1, B2, C1, C2 and A1 and A2-B1 for Young learners).

More information at: https://examenes.cervantes.es/

What is the SIELE?

SIELE (International Service of Evaluation of the Spanish Language) accredits the level of Spanish

for young people and adults who have Spanish as a foreign, second, or native language.

It was created and endorsed by Instituto Cervantes, the National Autonomous University of

Mexico, the University of Salamanca and the University of Buenos Aires, and guarantees the

strong presence of several linguistic varieties of Spanish.

It offers the possibility of carrying out a complete exam or only some tests if you wish to

accredit partial competences of the language.

The test and registration are available online and the candidate chooses a date and time that is

convenient for them.

For more information: https://siele.org/

How long are the class sessions and breaks?

In each 2 hour class there is a 10 minutes break; 3 hour classes have a 15 minute break half-way

through. There is no break in the 90-minute classes.

In case of missing class

Students can speak directly with their teacher before or after class if they will miss a class. They

may request from the teacher the material taught in class but it is not possible to recover

classes with other groups. Teachers are not available during teaching hours but not outside of

them. It is not necessary to contact reception in the event of missing a class. The teacher can

provide their data and email, but reception staff cannot provide contact details of the teachers.

Can I choose a teacher?

It is not posssible to choose a teacher. All teachers at Instituto Cervantes are university

graduates, have specific training in the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language and extensive

teaching experience, so that quality is guaranteed regardless of the teacher which teaches each

course.

Will I have the same teacher during all the courses?

A teacher can teach up to three courses in a row, to the same group of students. We believe

that the change of teacher benefits the student, since they will be exposed to new accents and

new ways of working.

Why do we always speak in Spanish?

It is important to be in contact with the language from the first day, so that students can hear

Spanish all the time. A language is learned by speaking and, therefore, we take advantage of all

situations to use the language. We explain everything in Spanish in a simple way so that the

student understands it (with graphic and visual support, repetitions, etc.) Of course, if someone

needs an additional explanation, we can use Spanish or English if necessary. In any case, the

teacher and the staff of the center will always be willing to help.

Why is it good to learn in a group?

Because of the methodology we use, we need a large number of people in each group. It is

proven that the advantages of this method of work are:

1. - Opportunity to work with more colleagues and, therefore, have more opportunities to interrelate with them and practice in real situations because this is the language we use to communicate socially.

2. - Work in groups to exchange information, ideas and knowledge. In this way, the tasks are solved better and in less time because each person contributes what they know.

3. - Promotion of collaborative learning as it is learned with and from other colleagues, their achievements and also their mistakes.

4. - Development of interpersonal relationships and social skills of group members.

Teachers and courses

The assignment of teachers to the courses takes place the week before the start of each course. Instituto Cervantes reserves the right to reassign teachers after the beginning of the courses. There is no guarantee that all students in a class will stay with their former classmates if two courses of the same level are opened simultaneously.

A continuation of each course will always be offered to students enrolled in the previous level within the same academic year, even if the course does not appear in the program. A minimum of six students is required to open a course.

As a general rule, there will be a minimum of six students in the classes and a maximum of sixteen. It is recommended to register in advance to obtain a place at the desired time.

Attendance

Class attendance is the responsibility of the student. If a student cannot attend a class, they will not be able to retrieve it by attending another class at another time. Once the classes are started, course changes are not allowed.

In case of missing class the student can ask the phone to a classmate or contact the teacher to send the homework.

It is necessary to pass the last course of each level (Initial 5, Intermediate 4, Advanced 5, Higher 6) to move to the next level.

Appendix 3. Evacuation procedure. FAP

If you discover a fire in its early stages and believe you can manage it yourself, you must not do

so. The first thing to bear in mind is that even the smallest fires can spread very quickly,

producing smoke and fumes which can kill in minutes. You should not tackle fire, no matter how

small it appears. Sound the fire alarm and inform the centre staff.

Users are responsible for not obstructing the evacuation routes or the fire extinguishers. They

may not leave rucksacks, bags or other belongings unattended in these areas.

The fire alarm is a continuous tone which will sound throughout the building.

If you discover a fire, you should:

Set on the fire alarm nearest to you.

If you hear a fire alarm:

Reception will call the Fire and Rescue Service (999).

Leave the building and gather at the meeting point CORNER DEANSGATE / LIVERPOOL

ROAD.

The centre staff responsible will take charge of the evacuation and ensure that nobody remains

in their part of the building (the designated staff in the centre will be those responsible for the

evacuation procedure). Once the evacuation is complete, the proprietors will be informed.

Remember:

• USE THE EXIT STAIRS CLOSEST TO YOU

• DO NOT USE THE LIFTS

• DON'T STOP TO COLLECT YOUR PERSONAL BELONGINGS

• DO NOT RE-ENTER THE BUILDING UNTIL YOU HAVE BEEN TOLD IT IS SAFE TO DO SO
