GA Airports Snow Removal According to The National Weather Service, the Salt Lake Valley can expect a warmer than normal winter with greater than average precipitation. Average snowfall at Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) is typically about 53 inches. Last year at South Valley Regional Airport (U42) crews plowed nearly 36 inches. SLC crews will plow eastside taxiways and taxi-lanes after commercial runways, taxiways, and aprons are cleared. Fixed Base Operators (FBOs) are required to clear their own aprons to the edge of their lease lines prior to airport crews plowing taxiways. Taxiway A and the runway at South Valley Regional Airport (U42) will normally be cleared and deiced by 9 a.m. after a snow event and snow crews will work throughout the day to keep taxi-lanes and common ramps usable. Tooele Valley Airport (TVY) usually receives much less snow (last winter less than 8 inches were plowed). It will not be cleared until SLC crews complete snow removal operations at Salt Lake City International Airport. Snow crews will normally clear snow from GA hangar fronts to within four feet of hangar entrances. Tenants are responsible to clear remaining snow.

New Assessment Matrix In Use Airports began using the new FAA required Runway Condition Assessment Matrix (RCAM) on October 1, 2016. The matrix defines runway braking conditions on a 6 to 0 scale. Perfect conditions warrant a runway condition score of 6 and conditions with nil braking warrant a runway condition score of 0. NOTAMS will show the condition score for the runway in three parts: touchdown, mid-point, and roll out. The condition scores allow airports to give more accurate descriptions of conditions that might impair aircraft directional control. Runway Condition Code 6: Dry Runway Condition Code 5: Frost or wet (includes damp and 1/8 inch depth or less of water, slush, dry snow, or wet snow) Runway Condition Code 4 (-15 degree C and Colder outside air temperature): Compacted snow Runway Condition Code 3: Wet runway, or dry or wet snow over compacted snow, or more than 1/8 inch (3 mm) depth of dry or wet snow, or warmer than -15 degree C outside air temperature with compacted snow Runway Condition Code 2: Greater than 1/8 inch (3mm) depth of water or slush Runway Condition Code 1: Ice Runway Condition Code 0: Wet ice, slush over ice, water over compacted snow, or dry snow or wet snow over ice
