Separator Ball Joint 204-192 (JD-219)

Removal

All vehicles

Disconnect the battery ground cable.1.

RHD vehicles

Center the steering wheel.2.

Lock in position and remove the ignition key.

LHD vehicles (if required)

CAUTION: Install the special tool to the lower steering column to maintain a straightahead steering wheel position. Failure to do so may cause damage to the steeringwheel clockspring.

Install the special tool to the lower steering column.

All vehicles

Loosen the lower steering column slider pinch bolt.4.Remove both front wheels and tires. For additional information, refer to Tires andWheels.

Disconnect the actuator electrical connector.6.

Detach the lower steering column.7.

Remove the steering gear shaft pinch bolt.

CAUTION: Whenever the steering gear unions and hoses are disconnected thesteering gear valve body ports and hoses should be plugged to prevent dirtingress.

Disconnect the power steering supply and return tubes.

Drain the fluid into a suitable container.Remove and discard the O-ring seals.

NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.9.

Remove both the tie rod ends retaining nuts.

Remove and discard the retaining nuts.

CAUTION: When the tie rod end is separated from the wheel hub assembly, the balljoint seal should be protected to prevent damage.

NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.

Using the special, detach both the tie rod ends from the wheel hub assemblies.

Vehicles with 4.0L engine

Detach the steering gear supply and return tubes.11.

Remove the steering gear.12.

Installation

All vehicles

Install the steering gear.1.

Tighten to 103 Nm .

Vehicles with 4.0L engine

Attach the steering gear supply and return tubes.2.

All vehicles

CAUTION: Install new retaining nuts.3.

NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.

Connect both the tie rod ends.

Tighten to 75 Nm.

Tighten to 10 Nm .

Install the steering gear shaft pinch bolt.5.

Tighten the lower steering column slider pinch bolt.8.

Tighten to 35 Nm.

LHD Vehicles (if Required)

Remove the special tool from the lower steering column.9.

All Vehicles

NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, someabnormal driving conditions may occur while the vehicle relearns its drivingstrategy. Connect the battery ground cable.

Install a new power steering reservoir, for additional information, refer to PowerSteering.

The content of this article/image reflects the changes identified in TSB-ST211-006

Replace the power steering reservoir only if any of the following conditions apply:1.

Reservoir bottle housing is split

Reservoir bottle port is crushed

Fluid is grossly contaminated with particulate matter, witch may or may not resultin a loss of function from the power steering system.

If particulate contamination is observed, but the steering system functions normally,drain the fluid from the system, replace the reservoir, and flush the steering systemcompletely with fresh fluid.

Check and adjust front wheel alignment. For additional information, refer to12.
