introduced Sept 2015 and are awarded in 2017 (Y10) 2018 (Y9) .

➢ The new GCSEs will be graded 1 to 9, with 9 being the top grade.

➢ The new maths GCSE will be tiered, with grades 4 and 5 available through both tiers.

➢ Students will only be allowed to resit English and Maths ( old and new GCSE ) in November.

➢ New AS and A levels courses introduced.

New Courses for Year 9 and 10

From September, students in Year 9 and 10 started studying the New AQA Science course.

They will first be examined in June 2018 for our current year 10 students.

What are the different courses we offer?

GCSE COMBINED SCIENCE - TRILOGY

Most students will be studying this option and will receive 2 GCSEs from this.

GCSE BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY and PHYSICS

Some students in years 9 and 10 (usually the top sets) will be studying for 3 separate sciences and will receive 3 GCSEs.

How are the courses organised?

There are separate units covering Biology, Chemistry and Physics, whether your daughter is covering the Trilogy or the Separate route.

There is no coursework in Science anymore, this has been replaced with ‘Required Practicals’

Assessment is done at the end of the course and all students will sit 6 papers (2 x Biology, 2 x chemistry, 2 x physics)

What are we expecting in the exams?

▶ More emphasis on practical work - linked to the Required Practicals

▶ Increase in the number of marks awarded for Maths skills (10% Biology, 20% Chemistry, 30% Physics)

▶ Students need to RECALL and APPLY equations - they will have to learn some equations off by heart. They will still be given some equations.

▶ Multiple choice, short answer and longer style questions.

Parental involvement – facts and figures

• It is essential that all students are supported at home as only 15% of student’s waking hours are spent in school!

• Research shows that parental involvement in their child’s education is by far the most influential determinant of success in school –up to 8 times more influential than other factors.
