It was great to see the support for a recent Tree Planting Day in Inverleigh and Batesford Organised by our local Landcare groups on National Tree Day these were well supported by our communities and will result in 1200 new trees to beautify our landscapes You can see the article on page 4

More spending on roads is something that is always high on the wishlist of our residents We recently received some good news in this area with an important freight road granted State Government funding ndash you can find out more on page 8

I also encourage our mature-aged residents to consider the great opportunities available during Seniors Festival which is running throughout the month of October Free and low-cost events and activities will be held across Victoria including in our Shire Further information is available on page 8

As the weather warms up our Environment team get to work on our roadside slashing program They also conduct inspections throughout the Shire and have the power to issue Fire Prevention Notices advising residents that their properties require further fire prevention work Our approach is to work with residents to keep the whole community safe Further advice on getting lsquofire readyrsquo is on pages 6 and 7

Wersquore pleased to announce the inaugural Golden Plains Twilight Market which will be held on Thursday December 21ndash more information is on page 5 This event is in response to feedback from our Farmers Market stallholders and patrons who told us they wanted to see a wider variety of stallholders and a more accessible timeslot Mark it in your diary and we hope to see you there

TRAINING ACROSS THE SHIREOur free and low-cost business training sessions will continue over the next three months in several convenient locations

We have been delighted with the community response to this training with several sessions booking out or close to capacity

Training and mentoring opportunities such as one-to-one mentoring small business training and more are coming up in Haddon Inverleigh Bannockburn and Smythesdale Check the events calendar on page 3 for further details

COMMUNITY TREE PLANTINGCommunity members were out in force on the Planet Ark National Tree Day earlier this year planting new trees shrubs and grasses in Council Reserves in Batesford and Inverleigh

The planting sites were organised by local Landcare Groups with tubestock and guards provided by Treehome Nursery and Council Over 1200 tubestock were planted that will add to the beauty of Council reserves in years to come A huge thank you to all involved

CWA LENDS A HANDOur Maternal and Child Health (MCH) services have been delighted with the support they have received from the Country Womenrsquos Association of Mereburn (Meredith) and Scarsdale

These groups have provided support to buy books for children to be given at their 2 year old check as well as gifts of toothbrushes and toothpaste to give children at their 18 month check These small gifts are a welcome surprise for families and children when they come along for their key age and stage checks with their MCH nurse

It is important to prepare before the fire season and Council is urging all residents to take the necessary steps to ensure they are Fire Ready If you are in a high-risk bushfire area know what to do and when and where to go on hot dry windy days

Prepare your property

It is important that you reduce the fine fuels around your house Fine fuels such as leaves twigs bark and grass are a primary driver of fire intensity and spread A well prepared property is more likely to survive a fire Some things you can do now include

Cut your grass around your house

Clean out the gutters on your house

Rake up leaves and twigs around your house

Donrsquot start fires

Careless actions on days of high fire danger can cause fires On High Fire Danger days avoid

bull Mowing or slashing long dry grassbull Angle grinding or welding in the

Councilrsquos fire season preparation

Golden Plains Shire does its part in preparing our community for the fire season by slashing long grass on roadsides and in reserves conducting fire hazard inspections of private property and issuing Fire Prevention Notices and helping CFA brigades to burn roadsides and reserves

As the fire season approaches it is vital that residents and communities prepare for a long hot summer Golden Plains Shire residents can do lots of things to prepare their property and family to reduce the bushfire risk

Fire hazard fines issued

Council issued 948 Fire Prevention Notices during the 201617 fire season directing landowners to cut their grass and clean up fine fuels around the home This was a significant increase from the previous year

Unfortunately recipients failing to comply with their Fire Prevention Notice can be issued with fines in excess of $1500 plus contractor cutting fees and administrative costs Cases can also go to court resulting in arrest warrants being issued fines confirmed with legal costs and a criminal conviction recorded

Councilrsquos fire hazard inspections 2017

Councilrsquos Fire Prevention Officers will commence fire hazard inspections of private land in early November Properties are inspected to ensure that residents have reduced fire hazards on their property by cutting long grass and cleaning up fine fuels (leaves twigs bark) in preparation for the coming fire season

Councilrsquos Fire Prevention Officers focus on the management of fine fuels in the area immediately around a house and outbuildings providing a level of protection to both the house and the residents who may seek shelter in it

Fire Prevention Notices are issued to properties with a fire hazard instructing the owner to clean up the hazard Non-compliance results in fines in excess of $1500 and additional costs

CODE RED - the worst conditions for a bush or grass fire Homes are not designed or constructed to withstand fires in these conditions and the safest place to be is away from high risk bushfire areas

EXTREME - if a fire starts and takes hold it will be uncontrollable unpredictable and fast moving

SEVERE - if a fire starts and takes hold it may be uncontrollable

VERY HIGH HIGH and LOW-MODERATE ndash if a fire starts it can most likely be controlled in these conditions and homes can provide safety but residents should stay aware as fires can still start and impact on homes quickly

COMPOST BINS AVAILABLEDid you know that materials normally found in household garbage - organic material grass clippings and food scraps - can be readily composted into a valuable soil additive

Materials that can be added to a compost bin include fruit and vegetable scraps coffee grounds tea bags and leaves fallen leaves egg shells grass clippings and torn newspaper

Council has compost bins available for sale at its Bannockburn and Linton Customer Service Centres Prices are $39 for a 220L compost bin and $49 for a 400L compost bin

ROAD UPGRADE ANNOUNCEDCouncil has received positive news with a local road funded under the State Governmentrsquos Local Roads to Market Program

$600K in funding will contribute to an upgrade of Gumley Road between Rokewood-Shelford Road and Wurrook Road This road was identified as carrying a large volume of heavy trucks connected with local agricultural industries

This road upgrade will support these industries to transport their products to market more efficiently and improve safety for large freight trucks and other road users Work is expected to commence in the second half of the year

SENIORS FESTIVAL 2017Seniors Festival in Golden Plains Shire runs throughout October and includes many free and low-cost activities ndash ranging from Tai Chi in Teesdale a mystery bus tour with pick up points in Bannockburn and Smythesdale and the Trailblazers walking group in Meredith

Other fun activities are running in Haddon Dereel and Rokewood

DETOX YOUR HOMEDetox Your Home is a safe free and easy-to-use service to dispose of common household chemicals and containers

This free household chemical collection program is coming to Ballarat in December for disposal of unwanted and potentially dangerous household chemicals

Ballaratrsquos collection will be on Saturday 2 December from 1000am to 100pm at the Ballarat Transfer Station Gillies Street South Ballarat There will be a Geelong collection in February 2018 ndash see the website below

WALK TO SCHOOLLocal kids and families are encouraged to get active this October as part of VicHealthrsquos Walk to School program

As part of this important initiative Council will provide participating schools with weekly fruit deliveries VicHealth funding for a walk to school event and the opportunity to participate in GPRocks ndash a treasure hunt for hand painted rocks For those families who live too far from school to walk to school we encourage you to park a distance from school and walk the remaining way - with park and walk locations to be identified in some townships Contact Belinda Community Wellbeing Officer on 5342 7000 for more information

ROADSIDE MAINTENANCECouncilrsquos program of grass slashing of roadsides and reserves will commence in early October and be completed by Christmas

The program slashes the road verge on sealed roads to provide for road safety amenity and fire breaks The program aims to balance grass growth grass curing and fire hazard so only a single cut needs to be done thereby minimising cost to ratepayers

Residents are encouraged to maintain their nature strip as appropriate - under the Local Law residents must not allow their nature strip to be kept in a manner which is detrimental to the general amenity of the neighbourhood

Joshrsquos existing business Vintage Apparel is an online store which sources and markets vintage clothing This venture helps reduce waste and encourages ethical fashion choices Josh recently took his business idea to Geelongrsquos Upstart Entrepreneurial Challenge and amongst a large group of aspiring entrepreneurs achieved second place

Bulldogs Leadership ProjectMembers of the Western Bulldogs Leadership Project recently participated in a two day camp which included attendance at the historic match in Ballarat between Western Bulldogs and Port Adelaide

The camp was attended by over 150 participants from Victoriarsquos West who are currently involved in the 6-month leadership project The Golden Plains Shire group is currently preparing a bullying awareness video as part of the community leadership project The video will be released on social media with the aim of raising awareness about the impact of bullying

Youth Roadshow coming soonThe Golden Youth Empowerment Roadshow is a series of events and activities designed to gain insight into opportunities and activities young people want to see in our region

The roadshow is being planned designed and delivered by a team of nine local young people who each bring a fantastic range of skills and knowledge to the group The roadshow will be delivered across the Shire in October and will seek feedback from all members of the community ndash check the Golden Plains Youth Facebook page for more details
