November 30, 2016, With Thanks Many parents have commented on our hallway display cabinet located outside of the gym. The space has been transforming regularly thanks to a dedicated group of students and Ms. Cuthbert. So far they have led us to the Hogwarts half door, reminded us to reflect on the sacrifices of those who fought for our freedom and most recently, into a winter wonderland. I would encourage everyone to have a look the next time you are in the school and I would like to extend a big thank you to the entire team for the effort they have put into building our school spirit. Volleyball Volleyball season finishes tomorrow with the Girls’ team playing in their competitive tournament. The Boys’ wrapped up their season yesterday and represented our school well, finishing second in our zone. Under the guidance of their coaches, the students have made tremendous progress during the season and have been great ambassadors for Gilpin. I would like to say thank you to the kids for their participation, to the parents for their support for driving the students to their games, and to the coaches who donated their time to give the students this opportunity. Great work everyone! Basketball season begins in January and is open to all of our students in Grades Six and Seven. I hope to see as many as students as possible joining the teams. Report Cards Report cards will be sent home on December 8 th . This can be a very exciting and nervous time for students and we want it to be a positive experience for them. Please take the time with your child to review the report card and talk about their successes and their efforts during the term. Also have your child pick one or two things they can work on going forward and have them set these as goals. Newsletter News Lastly, starting in January, we will be changing the format of our newsletter. Instead of sending it out once a month as a link to a pdf, we will be posting our news items directly to the website. A WALK THROUGH ANCIENT EGYPT By MIKKAL

WHO WAS INVITED?

On Monday, November 14, 2016, divisions 1 and 2 (Grade 6 and 7’s) had an ancient Egypt open house in the gym. They invited all family members, friends, students, and staff to attend. The gym was filled with numerous displays of different topics that taught the participants about life in ancient Egypt.

WHAT DID THE DISPLAYS INCLUDE?

All of the displays included posters. Some of the displays included slideshows, brochures, and sample artifacts, such as a cat mummy and weapons (bow and arrow, spear, and many more). Some of the topics included cats, weapons, daily life, sports, transportation, Gods and Goddesses, education, pyramids, Egypt in general, and more.

DID I HAVE A FAVORITE STATION?

My favourite topic was transportation. Ziyana, Katie, and Sabine were the group of students who researched and presented the topic. I learned that chariots weren’t just used for carrying things, they were also used for war.

WAS IT A SUCCESS?

The ancient Egypt open house met its objective to increase students’ understanding of what makes a culture unique as well as to help them see and appreciate cultural similarities and differences between our own present day life. I interviewed several students and asked them about their thoughts. Here’s what I heard. Charlotte from grade 5 said excitedly: “I thought it was cool because there were some crazy facts, like an evil god with a snakehead.” Cason from grade 1 said, “I thought it was very interesting and I liked learning about the gods and goddesses.” Justin from grade 5 said, “I liked the projects and I learned some new facts about ancient Egypt.” Jared A. from grade 4 said, “I liked the Egyptian products.” I also interviewed some presenters in Grade 7 about what they enjoyed most about the open house. Jacob said, “I liked talking to kids about sports, like soccer.” Maddie said, “I liked being able to film a video to show the students so they can know more about Egypt.” Willow said, “I liked teaching the other kids what I learnt about cats in ancient Egypt.” Kiana said, “I enjoyed learning and watching my peers educate Gilpin school about ancient Egypt. Also, the costumes gave me a good laugh.” Alicia said, “It was very interesting.” Then I interviewed Mrs. KC (division 2 teacher) and Mr. Dosanjh (division 1 teacher). I asked them what they liked about the project. Mrs. KC said, “I was proud of how well prepared division 1 and 2 were for their presentation. I also liked how much knowledge they had about ancient Egypt and how they shared their information. I was appreciative of how many students, staff, and family members choose to come down to the open house to share our students learning.” Mr. Dosanjh said, “All the projects were very different, students were very creative. For example: Sean and Alex made a journal from the past, kids learned a lot from the project, and groups helped each other.” Fantastic job and thank you for educating us, Division 1 & 2.

I saw these beautiful cherry blossom trees when I was walking with my family in Deer Lake Park. The trees reminded me of spring and summer. I miss these seasons when they end, but, there is a lot of excitement at school. Now, I can’t wait for Winter. I was excited to see the petals bloom, instead I will look forward to enjoying the snow and frost on the trees.
