Words of WisdomBeing a Better Leader - Admit It

I am Wrong: Admit to your staff when you have made a wrongdecision, because chances are they already know. Not beingable to say when you are wrong diminishes your effectivenessin the work place. Managers who narrow in on the blame andrefuse to admit that they are wrong are viewed by theiremployees as weak and dishonest. Eventually, employees loserespect for the manager and good workers move on. Peopleopenly respect a person when they are big enough to admit thatthey erred in some way or other.

Gator Bites welcomes guest columnist ChrisHervochon, owner of SOAR - A Better Way CPA.https://betterwaycpa.com/, 843-608-0298,[email protected]

As a small business owner, what are your best tips onbudgeting?

As a CPA that has helped large corporations, mid-sizedbusinesses, small businesses, HOAs and a (now) a countygovernment prepare budgets, there are a few things that areconsistent no matter the organization that you should bemindful of. Here are my top 4 things:

1. Revenue before cost. If you don’t have the revenue to payfor a contemplated expense, or if you don’t know that you’llhave the revenue, then don’t budget for the expense.Otherwise, you’re just asking to put yourself in a hole.

2. A budget is like a forecast, but budgeting and forecastingare separate. A budget is a plan, a forecast is what you thinkyour results over a given period are going to be at a given pointin time. In other words, a budget is set at the beginning of theyear (or some other time), and it stays that way until the nextbudget cycle. A forecast can be updated on an ongoing basis tocompare how well you thought you were going to do to howwell you did (actuals), or to compare to your budget. As anaside, my all-time favorite quote in the workplace came from anexecutive at a large company that I worked for, he said “theonly thing I know about that forecast is that it’s going to bewrong.”

3 .Ask for detail. If you’re in charge of aggregating the budgetand people are feeding you information, ask them for the detail. If they can’t articulate needs and provide good solid evidence, itshould be left out of the budget.

4.Revisit the budget frequently. A budget is a plan, and it’shelpful to revisit your plan from time to time. Otherwise, it’s justa document collecting dust on the shelf. If you’re constantlyanalyzing how you’re doing against your plan, it will help toinform decisions going forward as well as subsequent budgetpreparation.

Money Saving Idea

Here's The Proof!Below is a receipt from an actual purchase. While a 35% savings isn't typical on everypurchase, you can expect 10-15% on most itemsin our catalog.

In 2010 we partnered with Staples to create Rockwell PurchasingAssociation (RPA) so small businesses could qualify for commercialdiscounts. Your organization would have to purchase $35,000/year toqualify for commercial discounts. By combining the purchases of our100+ members, we qualify for 10-15% discounts. I've actually gottenas much as 40% but that isn't the norm. Contrast that with StaplesRewards, which is a retail discount program for individuals that gives5% discounts. As a member of Rockwell Purchasing Associates(RPA), you can buy online or in any store in the lower 48 states. Thereare over 23,000 items in the RPA catalog. Not only do we have officesupplies, but we have cleaning and break room supplies, furniture, technology products, logo items, and many other business serviceslike printing and promotional products. Non-profit organizations arealso eligible for membership.

Membership in RPA is FREE, and there are no purchaserequirements. To sign up, click on RPA and start saving.

BOOK REVIEW - Dr. Craig Richardson

The “Alligator Business Solution” is a book I would recommendto anyone thinking of starting a business, or anyone whocurrently has one. Throughout its pages, Roy makes you feellike he is right there with you in the room, encouraging you withhis treasure trove of true-life stories of business owners, eachwith a lesson to teach. The Alligator is a wonderful metaphor,as Roy takes each aspect of running a business and turns it intoeasily digestible “gator bites.” Roy shows us that the apparentlydaunting “elephant” like problem of learning a business is just toeat it “one bite at a time.” Everything is laid out for clarity andorganization, yet Roy makes learning fun with quotable quotes, funny graphics and thoughtful images. The book has hands-onexercises that reinforce its messages. It inspires the reader tosee that there are many ways to run a successful business, butall have one thing: singular focus. And that is the strength ofThe Alligator Business Solution: it practices what it preachesthroughout its pages that are conversational, funny and

inspiring, yet at the same time, driving home life-longlessons. Refreshingly, the book doesn’t preach in platitudes:instead, like all great “how-to” authors, Roy comes across as alistener: he makes you ask yourself, “What do you want? Whatare your values? Which businesses do you identify with? TheAlligator Solution is simply a must-have for future businessowners, and any current business owner will greatly profit fromits wisdom as well.
