He came to share temptation, our utmost woe and loss, for us

and our salvation to die upon the cross. So when the dove

descended on him, the Son of Man, the hidden years had ended, the age of grace began.

Come, Holy Spirit, aid us to keep the vows we make; this very day invade us, and every bondage

break. Come, give our lives direction, the gift we covet most:

to share the resurrection that leads to Pentecost.

+ Gospel Lesson Matthew 9:36-10:1 (CEB)

Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he had compassion for them because

they were troubled and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples,

“The size of the harvest is bigger than you can imagine, but there are few workers. Therefore, plead with

the Lord of the harvest to send out workers for his harvest.”

He called his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean

spirits to throw them out and to heal every disease and every sickness.

+ Hymn of PreparationO Master, Let Me Walk with Thee

UMH 430 (stanzas 1-3)

O Master, let me walk with thee in lowly paths of service free;

tell me thy secret; help me bear the strain of toil, the fret of care.

Help me the slow of heart to move by some clear, winning word of love; teach me the wayward feet

to stay, and guide them in the homeward way.

Page 3: GATHERED Prelude

Teach me thy patience; still with thee in closer, dearer company, in work that keeps

faith sweet and strong, in trust that triumphs over wrong.

Gospel Lesson Luke 9:51-62 4:1-11 (CEB)

As the time approached when Jesus was to be taken up into heaven,

he determined to go to Jerusalem. He sent messengers on ahead of him. Along the way, they entered a Samaritan village to prepare for

his arrival, but the Samaritan villagers refused to welcome him because he was determined to go to Jerusalem. When the disciples

James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to consume

them?” But Jesus turned and spoke sternly to them, and they went on

to another village. As Jesus and his disciples traveled along the road,

someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”

Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and the birds in the sky have nests, but the Human One has no place

to lay his head.” Then Jesus said to someone else, “Follow me.”

He replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead. But you go and spread the

news of God’s kingdom.”Someone else said to Jesus,

“I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say good-bye to those in my

house.” Jesus said to him, “No one who puts a hand on the plow and looks back is fit

for God’s kingdom.”

Offering Invitation

Invitation

Confession and Pardon

Merciful God, we confess that we have not loved

you with our whole heart.Forgive us, we pray.

Free us for joyful obedience, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Hear the good news:Christ died for us while we were yet

sinners; that proves God’s love toward us.

In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven!

In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven!

Glory to God. Amen.

The Peace

The Great ThanksgivingTFWS 2257 (b, c, d)

one: The Lord be with you.

all: And also with you. one: Lift up your hearts.

all: We lift them up to the Lord. one: Let us give thanks

to the Lord our God. all: It is right to give

our thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere

to give thanks to you Almighty God,

creator of heaven and earth.

Page 5: GATHERED Prelude

And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven

we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest!

Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest!

Holy are you, and blessed is your Son Jesus the Christ.

By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection,

you gave birth to your Church, delivered us from slavery to sin and

death, and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit.

On the night in which he gave himself up for us,

he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread,

gave it to his disciples, and said: “Take, eat; this is my body which is

given for you. Do this in remembrance of me,”

When the supper was over, he took the cup,

gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said:

“Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new

covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

Page 6: GATHERED Prelude

And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise

and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice,

in union with Christ’s offering for us, as we proclaim

the mystery of faith.

Christ has died, Christ is risen;

Christ will come again. Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest!

Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here,

and on these gifts of bread and wine. Make them be for us the body and

blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the

body of Christ, redeemed by his blood.

By your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other,

and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory

and we feast at his heavenly banquet.

Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your Holy

Church, all honor and glory is yours, almighty God, now and forever.

Amen. Amen. Amen.Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest!

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth

as it is in heaven.

Page 7: GATHERED Prelude

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power,

and the glory, forever.Amen.

Communion SongsJust a Closer Walk with Thee

TFWS 2158

I am weak , but thou art strong;Jesus, keep me from all wrong;

I’ll be satisfied as longas I walk, let me walk close to

thee. Just a closer walk with thee, grant it, Jesus, is my plea

daily walking close to thee: Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.

Through this world of toil and snares, if I falter, Lord, who

cares? Who with me my burden shares? None but thee, dear Lord, none but thee. Just a closer walk with thee, grant it, Jesus, is my plea daily walking close to thee:

Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.

When my feeble life is o’er,time for me will be no more;

guide me gently safely o’er to thy shore, dear Lord, to thy shore.

Just a closer walk with thee, grant it, Jesus, is my plea

daily walking close to thee: Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.

Marching to ZionUMH 733 (stanzas 1 & 4)

Come, we that love the Lord, and let our joys be known; join in a song with sweet accord, join in

a song with sweet accord and thus surround the throne, and thus

surround the throne. We’re marching to Zion, beautiful, beautiful Zion;

we’re marching upward to Zion, the beautiful city of God.

Then let our songs abound, and every tear be dry; we’re

marching through Emmanuel’s ground, we’re marching through

Emmanuel’s ground, to fairer worlds on high, to fairer worlds

on high. We’re marching to Zion, beautiful, beautiful Zion; we’re

marching upward to Zion, the beautiful city of God.
