It’s a short, but meaningful verse which reflects both the history and future of The Methodist Home for Children and Youth. In my first three months as President/CEO, I have learned many ways the favor of the Lord our God has rested upon us. I have also seen how He has established the work of our hands as we look to the future needs of our boys and girls. For the past 14 decades, the ethical leadership of a faithful Board of Trustees has lent their wisdom, experience and resources to guide The Home which stands as a permanent legacy of service to others. Together, they have built an amazing network of loving homes for some of Georgia’s most vulnerable children. Please know though…the need today is greater than ever. From the generous gifts we receive from day to day through the bequest legacies left through a will or trust in support of our boys and girls, God has showered us with blessings at just the right time. Still, we strive to reach out to more and more individuals asking them to join us in this great work.

God’s grace has most importantly been extended to these little ones in a spiritually nurturing way by the dedicated staff and many wonderful volunteers who truly make this house a home. We are all called to embrace the work God has established for our hands. Each of you, too, can make your unique contribution and be a part of The Methodist Home legacy. Seek His guidance and consider just how He will choose to use you to bless the lives of others in need. Your continued prayers are a vital part of our success in showing these children His love and healing mercy. Thank you for what you have done, what you are doing, and what you will do in the near future for our boys and girls!

Warmly,

Alison Evans

May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us–yes, establish the work of our hands. Ps. 90:17 (NIV)

Michael is a child full of humor, energy, and life. His life hasn’t always been easy but through the love and care of The Methodist Home, he is able to find the joy life can bring. The sun always shines when Michael is around. He can bring a smile to your face as big as the one he is always wearing. He has lived at The Home for three years and loves living here. Michael is very close to several of his staff saying they “help him stay focused.” That focus will come in handy. Michael wants to become an entertainer one day. He performs dances and songs for staff and peers. He even will give an impromptu comedy routine, given the audience. He is learning how to yo-yo so he can entertain with it, too. For most people, speaking in public is hard and Michael is no different. He practices quite regularly and is building the confidence to perform in front of a live audience. Michael wanted to be famous one day. When he was asked what being famous meant to him, he replied he wanted to be in the Gateway. It was a simple request but meant so much to Michael. When he was told he would be in the next issue, his face lit up. As a matter of fact, he hasn’t quit smiling. He may even be signing some autographs before everything is said and done! A difference was made in Michael’s life because someone had the resources to make his dream come true. Will you help us reach out to serve more children like Michael?

The Sun Always Shines with Michael

Are you someone who has the resources to make dreams come true? Can you volunteer or pray for our children? Can you do more? Will you?

Judge Mathews in Macon recently praised the professional and insightful

work accomplished at Lighthouse for Families, describing it as “excellent”

and “imperative to the permanency goals of the court.” He was thrilled to

learn of the new grant allowing Lighthouse to expand our services in other

counties over which he also presides. Lighthouse was recognized by the

Juvenile Court Judge as an imperative link in the chain toward permanency

for the children we jointly serve! (Note: See page 7 for more information on

the expansion.)

“Sunday afternoon several young men and their houseparent(s) came to PetSmart to assist the “All About Animals” Rescue Group with the weekly adoption day. Your young men were all well behaved and eager to help even without asking…. Thank you for allowing them to come today.  I just felt moved to contact you and let you know your young men made a difference today. Thank you for caring for and LOVING them.”

God Bless, K. Chatman ~ Friend

“I have long supported The Methodist Home, in a very modest way… I heard you (Dr. Derek McAleer) preach yesterday…I am moved to step up my support to The Home and here is a small start.  I pray God’s blessings on you and the leadership team.”  Your new friend, Dan P. ~Donor

JUST KEEP RUNNING! Those are words lived by our girls in Americus. Their lives haven’t run on a smooth track but they keep persevering. For some of the girls, the 5K Home Run was just another special event. For one in particular, the 5K was a first! “Margaret*” had never run a 5K in her life but her housemates were there every step of the way cheering her on with signs that said, “Just Keep Running”. When she crossed the finish line, arms in the air, she had pride, self-confidence, and a sense of accomplishment. Her Joy would not have been possible without an army of volunteers. The Home Run 5K was organized and led by Rebecca Ferguson and Travis Kelley, both friends of the late Jay Williams. The race was a tribute to him. Sixty-one 5K runners

and raised $5,700 for the Americus Campus of the Methodist Home in the first event. “Rebecca Ferguson used her wonderful organizational skills to create a plan and give us step by step directions for each task that needed to be accomplished”, says Judy Tott, President of the Americus Auxiliary. She adds, “Travis was our In-House race expert and put in many hours assuring our race met the highest standards.” Would you like to be part of giving our kids understanding they have not known- like a sense of pride, self-worth, and accomplishment? Do you have special skills or resources you could use to give them a learning experience? The Methodist Home would love to have you partner with us!

Eagle’s Nest Day Care Summer Camp kids learned a little something about faith through growing a garden this year. They planted several seeds and, not really knowing what might appear up, they found a wonderful garden of tomatoes, sweet potatoes, collard greens, and onions. The kids tended the garden. Our kids aren’t just learning about plants, either. When it comes to the garden, the campers found out they can do just about anything. Mr. Jim, our Chaplain, says that when he finds worms on the plants, he goes and gets the kids and they come pick the worms off! They love taking care of the garden and watching it grow. Once the vegetables are ready to harvest, the kids got to pick them and eat them. For some, it was a new taste experience. Our kids can’t wait to eat the tomatoes. They enjoyed learning about healthy eating while they sampled the fruits from their garden. Raising healthy children is an enormous task. Will you continue your investment in their healthy futures?

In Response to Christ and the Church

“I assure you that if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Go from here to there,’ and it will go. There will be nothing that you can’t do.”- Matthew 17:20 CEB

Camp Possibility was a tremendous success this year. Your support of $17,256 brought this exciting Camp experience to all the children on our Macon campus (ages 14 and younger). Our campers were able to participate in Community Service and give back to others. They learned about animals they had never seen or touched through “Zoo to You”. They played sports and learned about teamwork during Sports Week and Teambuilding Week and they were able to be creative with Superstar Skit Week. Two highlights during the seven weeks of camp included the trip to Robins Air Force Base and making special personalized scrapbooks of Summer Camp. At the Base, the children got to go on the Flight Line and go inside an aircraft. They got to ask questions about the planes, the jobs people do, and keeping the planes flying. They learned that goals were important and the key to attaining those goals was education. Making scrapbooks is also a fun time for the children. It’s also a time when they are able to reflect on their adventures and preserve some of the only photos from their childhood. Thank you for making Camp Possibility achievable and being part of restoring their childhoods. You have other opportunities throughout the year to restore childhoods by giving to Back to School (page 12), Workday (page 11), or during the Christmas season. Thank you for partnering with us to restore childhoods at The Methodist Home.

Restoring Childhoods Camp Possibility

“I had a lot of fun. I really enjoyed it. Thanks.”

“I liked Sports Week a lot because we all had a chance to work together as a team and we all figured things out without giving up!”

“I liked teamwork activities and completing my scrapbook. It meant that I was someone and others enjoyed being with me.“

“I love camp because it teaches you about activities and it helps you get ready for school. I love camp and I will tell (you) go to (it).”

Campers say Thank You!

Imagine Mary, a young mother who has no one to show her how to care for a child. Because of suspected abuse and neglect, Mary’s child has been taken into the state’s custody. Mary loves her child and wants to take care of her daughter. She just doesn’t know how. Mary feels hopeless but TOGETHER WE CAN HELP. Lighthouse for Families, the community based services arm of The Methodist Home, can help Mary and countless others like her.The Visitation Program Coaches will teach Mary about how to feed her child, give her child the proper nutrition, how to budget, and show her the resources she needs to keep her child in a safe home. Through our new intensive Visitation Program and in partnership with a collaboration of agencies, we encourage parents to see their child within 72 hours of being removed from the home. For Mary, that’s when the healing begins. She is able to continue the relationship with her child and this provides her with the motivation to learn the parenting skills needed. Mary feels a sense of hope and determination to do what is necessary to be permanently reunited with her child. We don’t stop there! We help restore relationships between Dads and their children too, even those fathers in jail. Video visits and group contact help keep fathers involved in the care and responsibility of their children. How much hope does it give a Dad to see his child regularly? How

much motivation does it give him to change his ways and to do better by his child? And what about the child? Every child wants to love and be loved by his or her parents. We want to give these vulnerable children every chance for reunification. For some this is a reality, for others it’s only a possibility. Lighthouse for Families provides the services needed

to give the child a real chance for that option. How can you be a part of giving these children a safe and loving home? In this program, we help provide babies’ and children’s supplies and toys. Could you send a contribution to help supply the needs we have as we coach and teach her and those in Mary’s situation how to keep her child safe?

Brianna is a very well spoken young woman who is a Junior in High School. When she smiles, it is with a quiet confidence. It is hard to imagine anything but good things have ever happened in her life. She is reserved and full of the promise tomorrow brings. That is why we were not surprised to hear how she recently acquired her first

job at Chick-fil-A. Brianna and her staff member Angie McGukin formulated a creative plan to get Brianna a job at Chick-fil-A. Brianna put her resume on a Chick-fil-A bag with her picture on the other side and bold letters proclaiming, “I Love Chicken!” Her professional resume was placed inside the bag.

Brittany then called the Manager several times before she delivered her resume. Brittany said the Manager was so impressed, he scheduled an interview on the spot. Brianna prepared for the interview with Miss Angie. Brianna sat through countless mock interviews to help her gain confidence. Brianna says she discovered she has a nervous habit of laughing after being asked questions so she worked on stopping that habit. She took classes on how to dress appropriately and “When I got to the real interview, it was like ‘Game On’!” Brianna also had work experience to draw from thanks to a campus work program. She had experience in the kitchen at campus events serving guests. She learned food prep, being assertive, and how to work independently. At the second interview, she was hired. “It felt good for someone to have faith in me and believe in me,” said Brianna. Between work experience, volunteer work, and creativity, Brianna landed the job she really wanted. Brianna has plans to put one-third of her earnings in long-term savings, one-third in short-term savings, and enjoy one-third. Brianna’s ultimate goal is to go to Gordon College to become a Registered Nurse in Pediatrics. Thank you for supporting Brianna and the other young people in our Independent Living Program. Your gift can lead to a job and a career.

Do you remember the days when a day’s work meant a day’s pay? You worked your way up with dedication and commitment. You rolled up your sleeves and got your hands dirty if that’s what it took to get the job done. You sacrificed and paid your dues to get to where you are today. At the end of the day, you had a sense of pride and accomplishment. You became independent and were able to contribute to society in ways that changed your corner of the world.

You read about Brianna on page 9 and how she is beginning her journey in the workforce. She is working her way up with dedication and commitment. She is striving to become a Registered Nurse and paying her dues along the way. She is becoming independent. The Methodist Home wants to instill this kind of work ethic in all the youth we serve. That is why we are asking you to invest a day’s wages to teach our young people the meaning and value of a strong work ethic.

This Fall Miley* is going back to school. She will be going to a new school but this isn’t her first time being a new student, in a new school. She admits to being nervous because she doesn’t know a lot of people but she is glad some of the other girls in her cottage will be in her classes. Her favorite subject is Social Studies. She also likes to learn about things in the past. Overall Miley, generally likes to learn. She made four A’s, one B, and one C on her last report card. “IT WAS A FIRST EVER, AWESOME THING I DID!” Miley says with a bright smile. She is most excited about her “Connections” classes of art and dance. Her face brightens when she talks about dancing. She told the story of being in the cottage before school began and showing her dance moves. It was a hidden talent. “They didn’t know I could dance! Afterward, I taught some of the other girls my moves,” says a joyful Miley of that day. She added, “I smiled the whole day.” It’s no wonder that Miley wants to be a ballet dancer when she grows up. She has been dancing since she was three and both her grandmother and great-grandmother were dancers. She takes ballet now but wants to take hip hop dance classes, too. Miley likes being a ballerina because it gives her a chance to express herself. She always dances from the heart! Her dream is to dance in the Nutcracker one day. She knows it will take hard work and good grades to become a dancer but she is willing to put in the work to accomplish her dreams!

ABOUT

Page 14: Gateway Fall 2013

“In August of 1981, only the main entrance and circle was paved. I was sitting in the back seat of a four door car watching the dust rise and feeling the bumpy road as we passed the pool. We had just entered through the back or side entrance of The Methodist Home property. This is my first memory of The Methodist Home. I was seven and a half years old.” A few years later, Mr. Rumford was introduced to us as the new administrator. He (Mr. Rumford) was intriguing! New programs were being implemented and integrated into our lives. We could earn money by raking leaves and improve our chances of going to college through studying and receiving good grades. However, the biggest excitement came through the Quilt Program. I had the privilege of being able to pick out the first quilt. No other child was allowed to be in chapel with you when you picked out your special quilt. I was overwhelmed looking at this sea of quilts neatly laid out over the backs of the pews in the chapel. I LOVED the quilt I picked out. This quilt came with a pillow and said that it was given by Springfield UMW 1985. Thank you! Mr. Rumford said something to the affect that “we were loved so much by the members of the Methodist Church that they were taking their time and energy to create a special quilt just for us to have as our own.” No sharing. No giving back. No giving up something that was truly our own. Just think, it is a gift for me made by someone’s Mom, Grandma, Aunt, and Sister, or possibly even an Uncle, Grandfather, Father or Brother. Imagine how powerful that statement is to someone who is not living with their Mom and Dad, or Grandma and Grandpa, or Aunt and Uncle.

If you are a quilter in the church or in a group, we need quilts to continue blessing our kids. Please contact Derek McAleer to arrange a donation. Thank You.

To this day, whenever I use my quilt, I think “Wow, someone loved me enough to invest their time and energy into this quilt.” And in turn invested their (The Methodist Home and Methodist Church members) time and energy into me. This is what I will share with my daughter as she receives the quilt that was given to me all those years ago.

BUILDING CHARACTER

for Success

In my home growing up, my mean and horrible mother insisted that all of her children do their chores. These unbearably difficult tasks loomed large every Saturday, because we couldn’t go off to play if they were undone. So I would buckle down to absolutely minutes of crushing labor before I was freed for the day. Sad to say, when I graduated and was out of the home, I was able to mop, wash and fold laundry, cook a bit, wash dishes, make a bed with hospital corners, mow the yard, rake leaves, take out the trash, and more. I expect some of these skills made me a bit more marriageable. Certainly they developed in me some ability to see work as related to reward, and to do what was need to reach my goal. Mr. Euell Byrd wanted me to show up at Byrd Brothers Grocery on time, dressed properly, and prepared to work my entire shift. He was willing to pay me to work, but not to shirk. Unbeknownst to me, my mean mother had already

laid the foundation for me to meet Mr. Byrd’s expectations. I learned at home the mindset I needed to succeed outside of my home. Here at The Methodist Home, we are seeking to prepare our young people to succeed in the outside world. They will need a mindset that reward is

related to work. They will need to know that if the boss isn’t pleased, I should not be pleased. We want to help them see how their own effort in school and work turns out to their own benefit. These are fundamental attributes which should be part of our character growing up. If the children we serve

arrive lacking them, it is our responsibility to help develop these qualities. Your support enables us to provide jobs and supervision to develop a work ethic. You help us provide tutoring to help catch up and stay up in school. Some of you hire our young men and women for after-school and

summer jobs, and help us build their character. All of us can pray for these young people, and share in the work and cost of developing a mature work ethic. Thank you for partnering with us in prayer and giving to build the character and habits which will lead them to success.

Here at The Methodist Home, we are seeking to prepare our young people to succeed in the outside world. They will need a mindset that reward is related to work. We want to help them see how their own effort in school and work turns out to their own benefit.

Some individuals are so passionately devoted to the children and youth of The Methodist Home, the thought of their investment in the lives of these special children reaching its conclusion is almost unbearable. Oney and Ann Hudson are two of these remarkable people. Through The Foundation of The Methodist Home, a way exists for generous people like Oney and Ann to touch the lives of children and youth after their deaths. Like all couples contemplating their years of retirement, they were investigating the effective use of their income through planned giving. Their CPA, Kevin Lipford, discovered that the Foundation provided a means for Oney and Ann to create a steady flow of income for their retirement needs and benefit The Methodist Home through a Gift Annuity. The Foundation

made it possible for Oney and Ann to ensure themselves of a steady retirement income, while ensuring the children and youth they loved continued to receive gifts that powerfully touched their lives. The Hudsons donated a piece of property to the Foundation that was sold and invested in an Annuity by the Foundation. The invested income will provide them with an income during their life-time! Still, most remarkable is the provision that when both pass, the principle becomes the property of the Foundation and is placed into the Endowment Fund. Upon their death, the Foundation utilizes the remainder to care for the youth and children of the Methodist Home. The children and youth will continue to experience their loving generosity through this perpetual gift.

Each of us desires to provide for our latter years, and for our spouse once one passes on. Most of God’s children want their life to accomplish even more than caring for those in our immediate family. A Gift Annuity allows us to care for the children and youth who depend upon the ministries of The Methodist Home, and to do so beyond our death. When the end of life comes, we want people to know we lived, and we made a difference. A Gift Annuity investing with The Foundation of The Methodist Home accomplishes far more than letting the world know we passed this way. As our gift continues to touch lives, we allow our faith, our generosity and all that we loved to live. Thank you Oney and Ann Hudson for your future gift of love that will transform the lives of God’s precious children for years to come!
