Bharti Airtel—whichrecently declared that itsnetwork is 5G-ready—does not anticipate anymaterial change in its

capital expenditure with the adventof fifth-generation services, its CEOGopal Vittal said on Thursday.

Addressing an investor call afterannouncing a strong Q3 perform-ance, Vittal declined to comment onspecific timing when tariff rateswould go up, saying it is a competi-tive issue and based on marketdynamics, but did not rule out thepossibility of implementing hikes. “Ibelieve, we will be ready to take uptariffs if and when any player actu-ally moves tariffs, given that we arealready at a premium,” he said.

Vittal maintained that the indus-try needs tariff hike to nudge theaverage realization per user (Arpu)per month towards ₹200 initially,

and ₹300 eventually.“We would love to see tariffs go

up. This is obviously something thatindustry needs in order to generatea reasonably good return on capitaldeployed...this is what would berequired for the business model tosucceed,” Vittal said.

He added that the company will

shut down its copper infrastructurein a year or so, and only have fibre tothe home. “We are...in the process ofrapidly upgrading our legacy cop-per assets completely to Fibre,” hesaid, terming it a “game-changingmove”. Outlining the company’sspectrum strategy, Vittal said BhartiAirtel is keen on a full footprint of

sub-GHz spectrum across the coun-try, even as it looks to balance a com-bination of capacity and renewals.

“There are many circles...wherewe don’t have a sub GHz spectrum,so we would love to have that. Thereare some renewals coming up on1,800 band, there is also somecapacity spectrum available on2,300 band where we already gotdeployed equipment...a combina-tion of capacity or renewal we willlook and balance it, and make surewe optimise what we do,” Vittal said.

His comments came at a timewhen the government has set theball rolling for the spectrum auc-tion, in which radio waves valued at₹3.92 trillion will be put on theblock. The auction in seven spec-trum bands for mobile servi-ces—700, 800, 900, 1,800, 2,100,2,300 and 2,500MHz bands—isscheduled to start from 1 March.

Bharti Airtel has logged net profitof ₹854 crore for December quarteragainst ₹1,035 crore loss a year ago.

Covid-19 drugs andchronic drugs such asanti-diabetics shored

up domestic sales for pharma-ceutical companies in the Octo-ber-December quarter.

Consolidated net profits ofSun Pharmaceutical IndustriesLtd, Lupin Ltd and Cipla Ltdduring the quarter doubledfrom a year ago, with salesgrowth in India aided primarilyby chronic drugs for the firsttwo and covid-19 medicines forCipla. Dr Reddy’s Laboratorieshad a weak quarter comparedto the other three, primarilybecause of a ₹600 croreimpairment on certain prod-ucts it had acquired. However, its Indian operations postedstrong sales growth.

US sales growth of the fourIndian pharmaceutical giantsvaried between 3% and 7%, asthe market continued its recov-ery following the coronavirusoutbreak.

Sun Pharma posted domes-tic sales of ₹2,753 crore, up9.4% from a year ago as India’slargest drugmaker, aided by

central nervous system drugsregistered robust growth. Indiasales were up 5% at ₹1,370crore, with chronic drug sales, which make up 65% of thecompany’s domestic revenue, growing 12.9%.

“We remain positive on thelong-term outlook consideringstrong chronic presence inIndia and a decent US pipe-line,” ICICI Securities said.

Cipla’s strong performancein the Indian market during thequarter was aided primarily byits covid-19 drugs portfolio, butanalysts raised concerns overwhether or not it would con-tinue, especially as daily newcases in India are declining.

“With covid incidences inIndia on a significant decline, the covid portfolio shouldsharply taper off in Q4FY21,which should only be partiallyoffset by an increase in growthrates for base portfolio immi-nently. As Cipla has a largerdependence on acute drugscompared to peers, there is afair chance that base portfoliogrowth may take longer toreturn to normalcy,” VishalManchanda, an analyst at Nir-mal Bang Institutional Equi-ties, said in a report about Cipla.

A special court designatedunder the MaharashtraControl of OrganizedCrime Act (MCOCA) has re-jected the CBI’s plea for thecourt to accept a closure re-port in a 2005 murder casein which former under-world don Chhota Rajanand five others are accused.

The CBI’s InvestigatingOfficer had submitted alongwith the closure report thatno strong case worth prose-cution is made out against

Chhota Rajan and other co-accused. The statements ofmaterial witnesses cannotbe treated as reliable andtrustworthy, the officer hadstated. Also, that mere busi-ness rivalry cannot be astrong motive for murder.

He had further pointedout that witnesses hadturned hostile in trialagainst the arrested ac-cused earlier. The courtsaid in its order while re-jecting the closure reportthat whether the witnessesare reliable and trustwor-thy can only be testified by

way of evidence.Special Judge AT
