THE INSCRIPTIONS O F SINAI.

Aim and THE work originally entrusted by the Egypt Exploration Fund to the authors of this of the work.

volume and of the 'Descriptive Text which is to follow it, was simply the publication of the inscriptions copied in the Peninsula of Sinai by the expedition sent out in the winter of 1904-5 under

the direction of Professor Flinders PETRIE. It became almost immediately clear, however, that a

small additional expenditure of time and labour would suflice to make the publication into a complete Corpus of Egyptian records from Sinai, mainly by the inclusion of a number of inscriptions of which squeezes are

presemed in the British Museum, but which the Fund expedition found to have been destroyed. As many of

these inscriptions were among the finest and most important left by the Egyptians in Sinai, the value of

our collection has been very considerably increased by their inclusion.

RI. K Weill's We hasten to acknowledge at once that our work would have been one of infinitely previous work. greater dificulty, and indeed could hardly have assumed its present exhaustive character,

without the help given by M. Raymond WEILL'S admirable Recueil des hscriptions Lyyptiennes du Sinai,

published in 1904. To M. WEILL belongs the credit of having drawn attention to the long-forgotten

collection of squeezes in the British Museum, of having classified and copied them, and of having sought

out, from the most obscure corners of our widely scattered literature of Egyptology, all references to the

remains of Ancient Egyptian activity in Sinai. M. WEILL'S exceptional gift as a bibliographer has left us

but little to discover in this last respect, though in the Descriptive Text to be published later we

shall have to express our indebtedness to Miss PORTER for certain additions, chiefly from works published

since 1904. Where so much is deserving of praise, it may seem rather ungracious to allude to defects ;

but we owe i t to M. WEILL to explain why we have found it desirable to incorporate in our work a number

of inscriptions already edited by him. In the first place, his copies are not facsimiles, and many of the

inscriptions are of considerable epigraphic interest. In the second place, by dint of a close study of the

squeezes, we have frequently found it possible both to add to and to correct his readings. And lastly,

the new material accruing from the Fund expedition often enabled us to join together inscriptions separated

and imperfectly understood by him, or to substitute better copies for the inaccurate sketches made by

early travellers and reproduced in his volume. We should be doing a disservice to our science if we conceded

the fact that the present work ought, in a large measure, to supersede and replace that of M. WEILL ;

but if our own efforts, after a certain lapse of time, should be similarly superseded, we can wish no better

fate for them than that they should prove as useful to our successors as M. WEILL'S labours have proved

to ourselves.

The E.E.F. The new materials at our disposal "were a vast collection of full-scale copies of materials. Egyptian inscriptions executed on the spot by Professor PETRIE and other members of

his party, and a considerable number of half-plate photogrtrphs, the best of which are reproduced in B

Professor PETRIE'S own book entitled Researches in Sinai (London, 1906). In addition to these we 'had

some half-dozen photographs with which Professor BORCHARDT kindly provided us. Professor PETRIE'S aforenamed book is, of course, a mine of information with regard to the antiquities of all the sites examined

by the expedition, and has proved quite indispensable to us; but we have also profited largely by his

never-failing readiness to aid us with verbal information.

The first task consisted in sorting and piecing together the various inscriptions, and Their treatment.

in inking-in the numerous sheets which had not already been prepared for reproduction

by members of the expedition. The number of the inscriptions which could be controlled by the squeezes

in the British Museum having been established, a systematic collation with these was then undertaken, and

facsimiles were made from the squeezes wherever the latter proved to be the only, or the best, sources.

Practically all the manual work involved both in these preliminaries and later was performed by Mr. PEET

singly. Both editors, however, are equally responsible for the final and exhaustive collation of the copies

which next followed; in this not only were the squeezes utilized, but also the admirable photographs

of the old Ordnance Survey, the more recent photographs, the " lottinographs" of LOTTIN DE LAVAL, the

notebooks of BURTON and PALMER, and whatever previous publications there might be. Then followed

the indexing of all names and titles, with a view to establishing the chronology of our materials. After

this a final renumbering was undertaken, the separate inscriptions being arranged in definite serial order.

Dificulties Particularly in dealing with the large stelae inscribed on two, or on all four, sides, encountered. difficulties were often encountered in grouping the various inscriptions together, and in

establishing their relative positions. Unfortunately, the indications marked on the copies made by the

expedition were often quite insufficient for our guidance, and we not infrequently despaired of attaining

the right solution. But an assiduous use of the photographs, measurement of the sizes of hieroglyphs

and the columns containing them, and other such means of verification, finally enabled us to solve most of

the problems that presented themselves. Here and there we may have gone astray ; and we would

therefore request students to take note that we ourselves have had no knowledge of the actual site, but

have merely reconstructed i t in our minds to the best of our ability and within the restrictions imposed by

the materials before us. It has been a task of no little interest to determine which inscription was carved

on which wall, where this stele lay, where that statue stood. Both of us hope one day to visit the site

that has thus absorbed our attention during many months ; if ever we should do so, we shall doubtless

wonder how we ventured to write a treatise upon a subject so remote, and shall meditate not without

pangs on the limitation of our power to visualize at a distance !

It would not be right to present this volume to students without an explicit Unequal value of the copies here admission and warning to the effect that the textual materials contained in it vary given.

greatly in their degrees of accuracy. Many circumstances combined to render the task

of the expedition one of extreme difficulty : the almost overwhelming mass of the inscriptions, the unwieldy

dimensions and sand-worn condition of many of the monuments, the unequal competence of the copyists,

and the imperative need of completing the work in a given space of time. To have published as they

stood the materials entrusted to us would have been to confer on Egyptology a very doubtful benefit.

We have therefore spared no pains to employ every means of control a t our disposal. where the originals

were available or our squeezes were in good condition-and fortunately this was the case in very many

instances-we may confidently claim to offer final and absolutely accurate copies of the texts concerned.

Photographs are more precarious aids, but they have enabled us to make many certain corrections. In

cases where no check was possible, we have thought it best to give the Fund copies exactly as we found

them, even when they contained obvious errors. W e earnestly beg those who use tltis book. to consult in

every case the Synopsis given in the following pages, or else the detailed commentary later to be published;

in both places they will find exact statements of the means of control that stood at our disposal, and

hence will be able to infer the eztent to whicl~ we can accept the responsibility for the copies here published.

By way of conclusion, there remains to us the pleasant duty of acknowledging our indebtedness for

help rendered to us in many quarters. Our obligations to M. WEILL'S published work have been

INTRODUCTION. 3

indicated above. Professor PETRIE has vouchsafed to us his ever-ready assistance - and counsel, and has

permitted us to utilize the maps given in his own book, which have been admirably redrawn by

Mr. Stanley NORTH. TO Dr. E. A. Wallis BUDGE, Keeper of the Egyptian Department of the British

Museum, we are indebted for full facilities in using the squeezes in his keeping. Miss Bertha PORTER

has favoured us with extracts from her invaluable bibliographical collections. Lastly, the Curators of

various museums both 'in Great Britain and in America have shown the utmost courtesy in replying

to our queries concerning the monuments received by them as a result of the Fund expedition;

since the list will still doubtless be supplemented, we defer our detailed ackriowledgments to these kind

helpers until the appearance of our second volume.

SYNOPSIS O F THE INSCRIPTIONS O F SINAI.

EXPLANATORY NOTICE.

THE Table contained in the following pages attempts to give, in compact form, the main details of

information concerning the inscriptions published in this volume. Hence i t will be possible to .see a t a

glance which texts are new and in what books the remainder have been published; the means of control

employed; the exact provenance; the nature of the monuments in question; and, finally, their

chronological order and distribution. Included in the list are references to a few minor monuments

which, for one reason or another, have found no place in our Plates : these will be dealt with in the

Descriptive Text as fully as our sources allow; most, if not all, will be found either in M. WEILL'S Recueil

des Inscriptions dgyptiennes du Sinai or in Professor PETRIE'S Researches in Sinai, books indispensable to all students whose requirements are not purely and simply philological. Unfortunately, we have found i t

impossible as yet to state definitely the present whereabouts of all the monuments that were brought from

Sinai by the Fund expedition : the original distribution lists are lost, and our efforts to track down the

originals have not always been successful; we hope to give such information as is availablc on this subject

in our second volume.

The various columns contained in our Table must now be considered in turn.

Number of Inscription. The consecutive numbers 1 to 355 are those by which, the editors

hope, the inscriptions will henceforth be known; for purposes of reference " Sinai 147" ought to prove

an adequate mode of quotation.

The principles of classification followed by us must here be explained. The main division is between

Egyptian and non-Egyptian inscriptions : the latter (345-355) consist of no more than eleven monuments

exhibiting the new script discussed in Journal of Egyptian Archaeology, vol. iii, pp. 1-21. Next, the

principal sites involved were distinguished ; these were I, MaghArah (1-45); 11, WBdy Nasb (46) ; 111, the

Valleys and Mines near SerBbPt el-KhBdim (47-61); and IVY the Temple of Seriibft el-KhLdim, together

with the Approach to same (62-344). Within these divisions the arrangement was mainly chronological;

see below under the heading Date.

Plate. By the Roman numerals given under this head the Plates of the present volume are

indicated ; on these the numbers of the individual inscriptions are clearly marked. As already noted,

a certain number of inscribed objects are not included in our Plates, but will be dealt with in our

second volume.

Bibliographical. Under this head a separate column is allowed for R. WEILL, Recueil des

Inscriptions e'gyptiennes du Sinai, Paris, 1904, where fuller bibliographical details will be found.

In the second column are grouped together the necessary references to a few previous publications of

fundamental importance. These are : William Flinders PETRIE, Researches in Sinai, London, 1906 (abbreviation :

P. R.) ; Ordnance survey of the Peninsula of Sinai, London, 1869 (the Text, containing a few line Plates,

constitutes Part I, and is here quoted as Sur. I ; of the three volumes of photographs the third alone

concerns us, and is quoted as Sur. iii) ; LOTTIN DE LAVAL, Voyage dans la Phinsule Arabipue, Paris,

1855-9 (abbreviation: LL.); R. LEPSIUS, Denknzaler aus Aeyypten und Aethiopien, Berlin, 1845-55,

(abbreviation L. D.) ; Georg STEINDORFF, UrEunden des liyyptischen Altertzsms, containing Urkunden des

alten Reichs, bearbeitet von KURT SETHE (quoted as CTrk. I), and Urkunden der IS. D9nastie, Bearbeitet von

KURT SETHE (quoted as U . 1 A concordance of these various works will be found below, pp. 17-9.

Nature of Monument. The indications given under this head mostly afford their own

explanation. Note, however, that the term "Free-standing stele" has been chosen, for want of a better

phrase, in order to indicate the large stelae, usually inscribed on all four sides, that are found in the

Approach to the Temple and elsewhere ; Professor PETRIE has called these Bethels, but this name, for

reasons to be explained in the Text, seems to us misleading if not entirely inaccurate.

Sometimes the name of the person in whose honour the monument was erected is added under this

rubric. Such an addition is made, however, only there where the name has proved of importance for the

classification and the dating of the monument. For example, our nos. 108-10 mention a "chief intendant

of the Treasury Ptahw~r." This man caused a rock tablet (our no. 54) to be graven near Mine C in the

45th year of Amenemmes 111; hence we are permitted, with relatively small chance of error, to date

nos. 108-10 from the Temple of Seriibft el-Khbdim to this year, and to establish their position in the

series accordingly.

Date. The Egyptian monuments in Sinai range between Dynasties I-XX (circa B.C. 3200-1 150).

Maghkrah provides all the records of the Old Kingdom, with one possible exception a t Serabit el-Khbdim

(no. 62); on the other hand it shows hardly any records of the New Kingdom (nos. 44-5), which are

fairly abundant at Serbbft. The Middle Kingdom is well represented a t both of the principal sites,

the period of maximum activity being apparently the reigns of Amenemmes 111-IT. Subject to the main principles of classification (Egyptian. and un-Egyptian inscriptions, and the four

large topographical divisions) named above, our, arrangement is chronological, ~ i n a s t ~ , reign, and regnal

year being taken into account as far as possible. After each of the series of definitely dated monuments

of the Old and Middle Kingdoms, the XVIIIth Dynasty and Dyn. XIX-XX, we have placed a series of

monuments dated to these periods on grounds of style only. Within the individual reigns the inscriptions

assigned to specific years are taken first (e.g. Amenemmes 111, years 2-45, nos. 83-110), and those not

attributable to a definite year follow (nos. 111-117) ; but many belonging a t first sight to the latter class

(e.g., nos. 84, 90, 94) were found to have been dedicated by persons named on specifically dated monuments,

and could, consequently, be intercalated within the former class. In such cases, the information that is 1

due solely to inference is enclosed within square brackets [ 1. As an instance we may cite nos. 108-10,

already cited under the heading Nature of Monument : these being, by comparison with no. 54, dated with

relative certainty to the 45th year of Amenemmes 111, are inserted in our series after the sole monument of

year 44 (no. 107), the entry under the heading Date being [ ,, , , , , ,, yr. 453 = [Dyn. XII,

Amenemmes 111, yr. 453. Should i t so happen, as in the case of no. 107, that the number of the regnal

year is given, but not the reign, only the king's name is bracketed. When the year is omitted, but can

be inferred, i t is indicated, not by brackets, but ~ r e l y by the position of the inscription in the series

(e.9, no. 109).

In the XVIIIth Dynasty the reigns of Hatshepsut and Tuthmosis 111, a period of dynastic struggles,

are taken together. In the arrangement of the monuments of these reigns (nos. 1748-204) the local distribution within the Temple has been taken into consideration, so as not to separate from one another

the scenes adorning the " Hall of Sopdu" and those in the " Hathor hanaffyah" respectively ; some of these

name Hatshepsut alone, some Tuthmosis I11 alone, and all clearly belong to the period of joint rule. They

are therefore classified before the stelae of the 25th and 27th years of Tuthmosis I11 (nos. 196-198), when

Hatshepsut was dead. In other cases as well (e.g. no. 48), the topographical distribution of the texts has been considered in fixing their number.

Exact Provenance. Under this rubric, which appears only in reference to the inscriptions from serkbft and its neighbourhood (the main divisions 111, IV, V), we have attempted, so far as possible,

to indicate the precise spot where the individual inscriptions were found. Sometimes the source of our information was a note written on the back of the original drawings, sometimes we were guided by Professor

C

Page 14: Gardiner_Inscriptions of Sinai

6 THE INSCRIPTIONS O F SINAI.

PETRIE'S book; but in other cases, and they are not few in number, a published or unpublished photograph

has enabled us to establish the provenance. Thus we should have been in ignorance as to the source of

no. 81 but for the fact that a small portion of i t is visible in the photograph of the "Lesser hanafiyah"

published in PETRIE, Resea?-ches, fig. 105 ; too little of the statue is there seen for a reference to the

book to have been given under the heading Bibliographical, and for precise information as to the evidence

on which we base this and other localizations the student must consult our Descriptive Text.

. The names of the various rooms aud parts of the Temple are those given to them by Professo~ PETRIE,

and adopted by us in our reproduction of his plan, PI. LXXXVI.

Some special remarks are necessary in connection with the large free-standing stelae assigned by us to the

Approach to the Temple. Our plan, P1. LXXXV, has been redrawn from R. WEILL, L a Presqu'9le du Sinai,

Paris, 1908, carte 5, p. 177, where nineteen points a t which monuments stood are marked. Op. cit., pp. 175-6,

he gives a list of these monuments, some of which were at once recognizable among our materials, while others

were not. Now M. WEILL was, for a time, a member of the E.E.F. expedition, and his later book was written

after the return of that expedition. I t seems, therefore, not without -significance that his nos. 1, 10, 11, and

14 (= our 66, 82, 73, and 138 respectively), all identifiable with certainty on evidence given either by him

or by Professor PETRIE (see Descriptive Text for details), proved identical with nos. 1, 10, 11, and 14

respectively in the materials as handed over to us by the Fund. The only other original Fund numbers below

nineteen found by us were nos. 4 (= our 133), 5 (= our 146), 12 (= our 74), 15 (= our 147), and 18 ( = our 248) ;

or, in other words, if ever there were any Fund copies numbered 2, 3, '6, 7, 8, 9, 13, 16, 17, or 19, their

numbers had been changed before they came into our h.ands. The coincidences above noted appear to warrant

the conjecture that Professor PETRIE'S original nos. 4, 5, 12, 15, and 18 stood a t the points 4, 5, 12, 15, and

18 respectively on M. WEILL'S plan; and since neither scholar suggests, with regard to these monuments,

any evidence pointing in a contrary direction, we have accepted these conjectural positions in our Table, and

several of them are also indicated in our reproduction of the plan. With regard to the monuments that stood at

the remaining points we know nothing, except as regards those a t 7, 9, 16, and 17 : the stelae at 7 and 9 were,

as M. WEILL'S account makes clear, our nos. 118 and 107 respectively, and a t 17 lay the broken stele of

Sethnakht (our 271), which, Professor PETRIE tells us (Researches, p. 75), originally stood on the south side of

the temple-entrance (see P1. LXXXVI) ; at 16 was the well-known and conspicuous stele of Sethos I (our

247), visible, for instance, in Researches, figs. 85, 90, hut left uncopied by the Fund expedition. Possibly the

remains a t some of the marked points were too much destroyed to be copied.

Plate showing original Position. Under this rubric references are made to the four maps or plans :

PI. XV, MaghLrah, adapted from PETRIE, Resea~ches, map 2, facing p. 38 ; P1. LXXXIV, Valleys of Serhbft

el-KhLdim, adapted from op. cit., map 3, facing p. 55; PI. LXXXV, The approach to the Temple of SerLbft

el-KhLdim, adapted from R. WEILL, La Prespu'?le du Sinai, carte 5, p. l77 ; and P1. LXXXVI, Plan of

the Temple of SerLbft, el-Khkdim, adapted from PETRIE, op. cit., map 4, a t the end of the book. Some

of the entries given under this heading are enclosed in round brackets ( ); this means that the numbers of

the monuments are, for one reason or another, not actually marked on the plans.

Nature of Copy. All reproductions of the original drawings entrusted to us by the Fund are

indicated by the words E.E.F. copy; and unless they are accompanied by some further symbol, i t

must be understood that they have not been altered or changed in any way. Where, however, a squeeze

(indicated by t), a photograph (indicated by "), or the original (indicated by 11) has been available, such

corrections as these permitted have beer] made. In the case of photographs, in particular, we are often unable

to guarantee that we have detected all mistakes ; but unless the asterisk or similar symbol is enclosed in

brackets ( ), the student is entitled to the belief that our sources of control have seemed to us to suffice for

their purpose. Further details will be given in the Descriptive Text-. Number of Inscription. As a guide to the eye our final numbering is repeated a t the right of

the Table.

This names "the brother of the prince of the Rethenu EJbbdd," cf. 85, 87, 92, and therefore ought to belong to the earlier part of the reign. The owner of this stele is named on a graffito (7) at bottom of 114, E. side. We have no hand-copy of the figure of Sopd between 124 (a) and (b). The attribution to Zaf is based solely on the position in the shrine of kings.
