Welcome to the Festival of Country Gardens for Spring 2015. As I write this in the last few days of the official Winter, gardeners already know that Spring is here. Of course, so do the birds and other creatures with the male wren in his brilliant blue plumage, the Guinea Fowls pairing off and sneaking into the bushes, a mother duck appearing on the banks of a stream with five fluffy ducklings in tow and a possum with a youngster on her back waiting in the fork of a Chinese Elm for the evening apple core from this writer. Bees are foraging in the almond blossom, that harbinger of spring, and, thank goodness, the days are lengthening. Here the seasons are clearly defined with a cold winter, often with frost in low lying val-leys, then a distinct change occurs and there is blossom in the orchards, bulbs of all sorts flower profusely, followed by wisteria, apple blossom, early roses and many more. As it warms and the weather becomes less blustery we stage our Festival to show our gardens in both mid-Spring, the Prelude, and then later in Spring, the Main Festival of early November, when the roses are near their peak and the perennials exuberant. We aim to place our gardens in context by exploring some of the local countryside, thus we offer walks to see wildflowers in Jarrah forest near Bridgetown and we’ll be having two splendid guided walks through the notable Balingup Golden Valley Tree Park. A special event is occurring this year, the Blooming Wild Festival, which complements our Festival. All this and more is described in our Mini-events sections following. We look forward to meeting you in our gardens soon,

Peta TownsingChairman, Blackwood Country Gardens Inc.29 August 2015

Manjimup (continued, refer map, page 13)98 - Memories Main FestivalA large contry garden with diverse plant collectionsEvolving now for over 22 years, we have been busy working on our garden since it all began back in April 1993, it has become a very special place for the birds, bees and of course, US! Memories has an extensive range of ornamental trees, shrubs and various rare and unusual plants. A lot of trees have been planted for loved ones – hence the name of our garden. It is a large country garden with stunning sweeping lawns and borders with large deciduous trees making the frame work for lovely under plantings of cottage, annuals and perenni-als, such as Fox-gloves, Aquilegias, Delphiniums, Poppies, Salvias, Queens Anne Lace and Bulbs, to name a few. Many different areas are made up of smaller garden beds, which have interesting garden subjects such as Conifers, Lilacs, Camellias, Azaleas, Day Lilies, Philadelphus, Crepe Myrtles and Hydrangeas. Many thanks to all the gardeners: those who open their gardens; those who visit and those who help. Without the gardeners we would not have a Festival.

And to those who are our sponsors who may not garden, but support us in any case, we say thank you.
