The creativity and resourceulness o the
sta at Brookside Gardens has certainly
been tested by a very challenging 2010. Theckle weather has thrown every extreme:
with punishing snows and cold drying winds
in February that required hours o snow
removal to reopen the Gardens; a summer
with a record-breaking number o days above
90 degrees that orced the closing o Wings
o Fancy; the rapid, violent windstorm in
July that elled dozens o trees; and an early
morning thunderstorm in August that cast
3.3 inches o rain in less than hal an hour,
which scoured the creek and surrounding
gardens with a fash food six eet or more above its regular level.
Clean up and restoration ater each weather event has taken countless hours
and is ongoing, as Gardens sta coordinates with other skilled trades in
Montgomery Parks to repair the damage. In addition to replacing damaged
plants, other restoration includes signicant work by the arborist crews to
remove and prune hazardous trees, ence replacement and repair, asphalt
repair, and cleaning out clogged storm drains. All these reparations divert
resources earmarked or daily operations rom our already lean budget. As
you may know, this scal year the budget or Montgomery Parks was cut by 15
percent. Next year looks to be similarly harsh. And despite this, sta continues
to be optimistic about what we can accomplish and resourceul in ways tocontinue providing the high quality garden and programs our visitors expect.
I am very grateul to the sta or their commitment and ingenious solutions,
and to the volunteers and donors who support our operations through the git
o their time and money. Brookside Gardens is a special place, and it takes
many special people to keep it that way.
Best regards,
Stephanie Oberle

A
pproaching its teenth season o fight, the Wings
o Fancy Live Caterpillar and Butterfy Exhibit has
grown and changed every year, with the goal o creating an
exceptional, enjoyable and educational experience. Nearly
50,000 visitors come to the exhibit and more than 200
volunteers participate in its operation annually, so we must
be doing things well enough to keep people coming back
or more!
In order to import butterfies across state lines, Brookside
Gardens is required to secure a permit rom the U.S.
Department o Agriculture (USDA). Non-local butterfies
and caterpillars are considered to be potential pests, and
the USDA regulates their movement and use. The permit
states that no butterfy lie stages may leave the exhibit,
which means that our greenhouse must be butterfy-
prooed every spring. The permit also requires that a
person be stationed at each o three exits during all hours
o operation, to check or hitch hikers on anyone leaving
the fight house, which is why a robust volunteer program
is necessary and crucial to the exhibits success.
Dr. Wayne Wheling is the USDA entomologist who oversees
Wings o Fancys import permit. Dr. Whelings support o
the exhibit has been a key element in its ongoing success.
In its earliest years, he helped nd solutions to the
challenges o bringing a thirty year old greenhouse acility
up to current standards o containment. Our containment
director, Cheryl Beagle, and carpenters rom the Parks
Departments Facilities Management Division have gured
out how to complete the required structural modications
quickly and eciently every spring when display change
begins. The fight house is inspected by a representative
rom either the USDA or Maryland Department o the
Environment (MDE) beore any butterfies may be released
into it. Containment must be assured beore the exhibit
components and interpretive materials are installed.
The interpretive panels are a cooperative creative eort
between the Parks Departments Exhibit Shop designers
and Brookside Gardens sta.
The exhibits most interesting components, the caterpillars
and butterfies, must be fying or crawling in sucient
numbers on opening day. Several devoted butterfy and
moth anciers (lepidopterists) share caterpillars with us
throughout the season, but especially beore opening day,
when we dont have any caterpillars o our own. They
have given us a number o dierent species, including
native giant silk moth and Baltimore Checkerspot butterfy
caterpillars. Our exhibit is greatly enriched as a result o
their generous support.
Wings o Fancy initially exhibited only butterfies that live
in North America, but with guidance rom Dr. Wheling,
our permit has expanded over the years to include
species that live in other parts o the Americas. With
urther modications to our acility, we were able to get
approval to import butterfies rom Asia and, most recently,
Arica. Dr. Wheling has also helped exhibit sta modiy
our techniques and methods to improve the health and
longevity o the butterfies.
A willingness to change and try new things is at the heart
o making Wings o Fancy resh and interesting each
year. We try to pay attention to what our visitors respond
to, as well as listen to our volunteers observations and
experiences. Our volunteers are passionate and curious
about butterfies and are always bringing us questions
and new inormation to incorporate into the exhibit. We
continue to be ascinated by the complex lie cycle and
lie story o butterfies, always nding compelling ways to
share our passion with our volunteers and visitors.

Adventures With Food Childrens Day 2010
Brookside Gardens largest special event, Childrens Day,
had a picture perect day this past September. Ninety
volunteers helped make it a successul, exciting event or
our estimated 4,000 visitors. All Childrens Day activities
are planned especially or elementaryage children and
relate to an assigned theme this year being, Adventures
With Food and stemming rom Brookside Gardens overall
theme, Food For Thought.
In addition to the un hands-on activities, amilies
listened to the sounds o the Richmond Indigenous Gourd
Orchestra and explored a gourd-petting zoo that the
band shared with the public. Whats a gourd orchestra?
The orchestra is made up o ve band members who wear
stylish gourd hats and fashy costumes accessorized with
gourd buttons. Their lively music comes rom a variety o
homemade gourd instruments. It is described as Paleolithic
lounge music mixing past with present, rhythm with
melody, and chaos with order. Whatever it
was, it was lots o un or everyone!
As children participated in several hands-
on activities spread throughout the
gardens, they were on a mission to stamp a
Passport detailing their accomplishments.
Kids travelled rom the Plant a Mini Salad
Bowl activity to Fruit and Veggie Bingo, on to
Fruit and Veggie Beach Ball, and to the other
displays including Pollinators and Food, Fruit
and Veggie Scavenger Hunt, Fruit and Veggie
Painting Cornucopia, Face Painting, Fruit and
Veggie Printing, and an actual Kids Farmers
Market (a avorite activity, as it turns out!).
At the Kids Farmers Market, children chose a recipe and
then shopped with play money to obtain the produce
needed to make their dish. Many thanks to Rocklands
Farm whose support made or a smooth-running Market.
Additionally, Rocklands set-up their own Farmers Market
as an extra bonus or the adult crowd. We are pleased that
several volunteers rom the Botanical Art Society o the
National Capital Region have come annually to support
Childrens Day to teach children watercolor painting
techniques.
Feedback rom the public was especially complimentary
this year. And our visitors were generous in bringing ood
donations, accumulating two large boxes o ood that
Brookside Gardens donated to Marthas Table. Brookside
Gardens is grateul to the Friends o Brookside Gardens or
their support o this popular special event allowing ree
admission or the public. A great time was had by all!

Volunteer Update:Student Service Learning
M
ost students in Montgomery County must perorm
volunteer service in order to ulll graduation
requirements. Montgomery County Public Schools require
students to complete 75 hours o Student Service Learning
(SSL) hours and many local private schools have similar
community service requirements. In the last scal year
at Brookside Gardens, 118 student volunteers rom 26
area middle and high schools volunteered more than
2,500 hours. Students volunteer at our seasonal Wings o
Fancy Live Butterfy Exhibit, Garden o Lights Holiday Light
Display, and one day events such as Childrens Day, Earth
Day and the Garlic Mustard Challenge.
Providing an opportunity or young people to volunteer
outside in a public garden is imperative, because it
introduces them at an early age not only to the great
outdoors, but also to one o the wonderul ree resources
o Montgomery County: Brookside Gardens, as a part o the
Montgomery Parks system. Sta and volunteer mentoring
o our student volunteers urther ensures that no matter
what eld they choose to work in as adults, students
will have developed an appreciation or horticulture and
gardening. In addition, many o our student volunteers
benet rom learning or the very rst time important job
readiness skills, such as punctuality, appropriate workplace
dress and basic workplace communication skills.
Student Volunteer Highlight
Phanna Lamlek o Sherwood High School is our top
student volunteer or the 2010 scal year. Phanna
completed 116 hours at the Wings o Fancy Live Butterfy
Exhibit and at the Garden o Lights Holiday Light Display.
Phanna started volunteering with Wings o Fancy at age 14,
and over the past several years has volunteered more than
300 hours at Brookside Gardens!
Je Kimm rom the Bullis School is the runner up or
FY2010 with 96 hours. Je worked as a Wings o Fancy
Flight Attendant.
Jonathan Mallory rom the Washington Christian
Academy completed 72 hours as a Gardeners Assistant.
Jonathan liked volunteering here so much that even ater
he completed his graduation requirement, he returned
throughout the summer to help out.
Vishal Hemnani rom John F. Kennedy High School
completed 70 hours as a Wings o Fancy volunteer. Vishal
started out in Wings o Fancy in 2009 and returned as a
volunteer in 2010 with three o his classmates through his
schools Leadership Training Initiative program.
Brookside Gardens benets greatly rom the energy and
enthusiasm that our student volunteers bring to the job.
Thank you to our many student volunteers, and thank you
to all o our volunteers, or all that you do or Brookside
Gardens!
