From the Athletic Director

This certainly has been a fantastic week for GIS Sport. The School now boasts two

students that compete at a Junior International Level in Swimming and our U18 Boys

Football Team remain unbeaten as they clinched the ISAC 2016 title in a tense final. It just

goes to show the potential that our students possess.

This week the leaders within the Sports and PE Department hosted an evening discussing

‘The Current Provision of Sport and PE and Future Direction’. I invite anybody who

was unable to attend the meeting but wishes to know more to please get in contact with

me and I will happily discuss or send details regarding our vision for all students, parents

and staff.

International Selection

Revan Senaratne selected for Sri Lanka Swim Team

Revan Senaratne has been selected for the South Asia Swimming Championships 2016,

which take place next week. He will represent his home nation of Sri Lanka against the

best swimmers from their region.

In July Revan travelled home to take part in their national championships, where he

secured 4 gold medals and with them, fast enough times to make the team.

Revan arrived at GIS in 2015 and has made huge progress in that time, becoming a top

team mate alongside his individual ability in the water.

Revan will take part in the 200 IM, 200 Freestyle, 100 Freestyle and 100 Butterfly as well

as 4x100 Medley Relay, 4x100 Freestyle Relay and 4x200 Freestyle Relay. We wish him

well in his events and look forward to hearing about his results.

Player Safety Top Priority at GIS

GIS announces introduction of Return2Play Concussion Policy

Garden International School is pleased to announce the inclusion of a ‘Graduated

Return2Play Concussion Policy’, as part of its ongoing commitment to ensure excellent

standards of care for its pupils taking part in sports.

Concussion awareness has been high on the agenda for many sports teams, schools and

sport bodies in recent years, as reflected in the introduction of concussion guidelines and

training from the RFU, as well as increased investment in concussion and brain injury

research.

Our return2play concussion policy is designed to improve communication between staff,

parents and pupils to ensure that students are managed correctly in every sphere of

activity, whether in or out of school, while they recover from their concussion.

Concussion , and its long term effects, is rightly becoming an increasingly prevalent

concern amongst parents, coaches and players. Whilst there are risks associated with

sport, we believe that, when injuries are properly managed, the benefits of involvement

far outweigh those risks. We’re delighted to be working alongside Florence Chan and the

medical team at GIS to help provide a gold standard of care. By doing so we know that we

can significantly reduce the risk of any long-term harm caused.

Senior School Sports Day 2016

Whole of Secondary School participates at UM Stadium

This year's Annual Secondary School Sports Day was held on Tuesday 11th October at the University Malay

Sports Stadium. In near perfect weather conditions, the secondary school students ran, threw and jumped

magnificently for their houses. Throughout the day each of the houses held the lead in the overall

competition and the final positions were decided by the last few relay races. The final results will be

announced in the results assembly on the 25th October 2016.

A massive well done to all the students who represented their house on the day.

U18 Boys Win ISAC Tournament 2016

It was another fantastic night for the U18 Boys Football team as they cruised their way

through the league stage for a showdown with Alice Smith School in the Final. After

taking an early 3-0 lead we looked comfortable and in control of the game. However,

Alice Smith pulled the score back to 3-3 asking questions whether GIS could regain the

upper hand for a second time. The boys showed their mental toughness to score another

2 goals and the final score was 5-3 to GIS.

The boys are unbeaten so far this season and there are whispers to suggest this team

may have what it takes to cause an upset at SEASAC 2016.

U15 Boys Qualify through to ISAC Final in November

Fantastic Performances and Perfect Start

v BSKL Won 4-0 ( A Masoudi x2, B Marsi, B Soo)

v Alice Smith Won 1-0 ( A Masoudi)

V Tenby Won 3-1 ( J Ida, A Masoudi x2)

The GIS dragons U-15 football team couldn't get off to a better start to their season with

playing 3 games and winning all 3! In the first game, dragons played against BSKL which

the first game finished 4-0, with goals coming from Ali Masoudi scoring 2, Bence Marsi

scoring the third and Bryan Soo scoring the 4th. The GIS dragons looked strong going

into the next game against the KL rivals, Alice Smith. The game was very close, with both

teams giving all they had, but a solo effort from Ali Masoudi was the decider in that game

ending 1-0. Dragons going into the game with 5 scored and 0 conceded. Last game was

against Tenby, which if GIS dragons won, they would qualify from their group. The game

started slow as all players had given their all during the last two games. But the dragons

knowing that if they won they would qualify, they gave the extra. A good long range effort

from Jun Ida gave the dragons the lead. Sloppy defending from Tenby made Ali Masoudi

pounce on it and score the second for the team. The second half started with a solo goal

from Tenby after bad defending from GIS. It was all to play for now. But a brilliant solo

goal from Ali Masoudi after a pass from Jun Ida was the decider of the game. GIS dragons

had now won their first 3 games with scoring 8 goals and only conceding 1.

U15B Boys Football Perform Admirably at ISAC

GIS has two teams enters for ISAC competition

v ISKL A Won 3-0 (T Allen, M Geneid, J Wang)

v AISM Draw 0-0

v ISKL B Lost 4-0

V Alice Smith Lost 1-0

The U15B put together a string of fantastic performances against other schools A teams!

The first game was against ISKL A team and the boys rose to the challenge by

convincingly dispatching the opposition by scoring 3 superb goals. A tough game against

AISM saw the boys battle hard and another superb performance ensured a clean sheet

against another A team.

U15A Girls in Pre Season Friendly v KLASS

Girls make encouraging start in first game of Season

U15 Girls all smiles during their first game of the season.

The U15 Girls travelled to Alice Smith School to participate in their first friendly fixture of

the season. The Girls played three thirds of 15 minutes and showed improvement as the

games went on. K Massawe and G Gajeepan got themselves on the score sheet finishing

off well worked goals by the team. A fantastic start with much to come. Welldone.

U13 & U16 Netball Girls

Netball welcomes AISM to GIS in Pre Season Event U13 v AISM Won 3-2 The U13 netballers played their first game of the season against Australian International School on Thursday, winning 3 - 2 despite having brand new shooters. The new players have slotted into the team perfectly and the defensive work from all players was excellent. We are looking forward to the rest of the season. U16 v AISM Lost 15-5 The U16 squads also played their first games of the year despite being their preseason. Although they missed out on a win on this occasion, there was some encouraging attacking play with Siobhan, Charlotte and Isabella scoring some fantastic goals. Miss Shilton is looking forward to working with the U16’s in the run up to the SEA games in March.

Matthew Tang Shines at DSA Aquathon 2016

Biathlon Event- Swim and Run

Matthew Tang competed in the DSA Aquathlon last weekend, which was organised as

part of the Malaysian Hari Sukan Negara program 2016. Moreover, we are thrilled to

share that he finished 1st in the U10 category! Matthew had to swim 200m freestyle

followed immediately by an 800m run, which is typically considered as a Biathlon event.

A huge congratulations to Matthew on this fantastic achievement.

Kai Xiang Low and Jovan Ooi represent GIS at Fencing

Competition

Medals awarded to GIS in Hong Kong

Kai Xiang Low travelled to Hong Kong in the holidays to compete at a prestigious fencing

tournament organised by the Hong Kong Fencing School. He managed to fight his way to

a silver medal in the U12 foil category. In addition, Jovan Ooi earned a bronze medal in

the U12 foil category even though he is in Year 6! The boys currently train as part of the

CCA programme and we wish them the best in future events. Well done boys.

Connor McStea competes a year young at Cross Country Event

Former GIS Athletic Director hosts UWC East Cross Country Series

On Wednesday 5th October Connor McStea participated in Singapore at the UWC-East Cross Country

Series, which was ran by our former Athletics Director Ian Deeth. Connor was the youngest competitor

running a year young in the U12 Boys category and in his first 3km race. Connor ran superbly against the

older boys finishing in 10th position overall. There were 11 schools in total and Connor was the sole

representative carrying the flag for GIS. Well done to both Connor and Ian.
