Many firearms shooters come to airguns bringing things from their experience that aren’t always true for air-guns. The need to clean barrels is one thing you can forget, because airgun barrels don’t get dirty in the same way as firearm barrels. Even more important for airgun hunters, though, is the question of velocity.

With firearms—velocity matters

In the early part of the 20th century, hunters learned some-thing new—what velocity can do on game. It began with high-velocity cartridges like Savage’s 250-3000, which was the first successful commercial bullet to travel 3000 f.p.s. When that came into being, it changed everything—for the first time, a .25-caliber rifle shooting an 87-grain bullet was capable of taking deer-sized animals with ease out to 250 yards. Prior to that time, a .25-caliber rifle was considered only good for rabbits, squirrels and maybe fox.

Hot on the tail of that revolutionary round were even faster cartridges such as the 22-250 and eventually the .220 Swift. A 50-grain bullet from a Swift left the muzzle at more than 4,000 f.p.s., producing shocking results on game at unbelievable distances.

As the decades passed, hunters around the world learned that velocity was an important part of what made a cartridge successful. Of course, the designs of the bullets had to match the velocities at which they were driven or everything the gun gained through speed could be for naught. So, the shooting sports entered a century-long bullet development cycle that’s still underway.

Where airguns come in

The point of this article, though, is that airguns differ greatly from firearms when it comes to velocity. Airgun velocities top out at less than 1500 f.p.s. No amount of technology is going to change that, because we’re hard up against the laws of the physical world. Compressed air just won’t shove a projectile any faster regardless of what you do.

While a .177 pellet traveling 1400 f.p.s. sounds fast, it’s nowhere near the speed of even a bullet from the lowly .22 Winchester Magnum rimfire cartridge, to say nothing of the current crop of .17-caliber rimfires. And none of those rounds is as fast as the centerfire velocities I just mentioned. Airgun velocities are simply not equivalent.

Hydrostatic shock

When a fast-moving bullet impacts soft tissue, it imparts en-ergy to that tissue in the form of shock. You’ve probably seen slow-motion videos of bullets hitting ballistic gelatin and the ripples of shock waves emanating from the path of the projectile. What you can’t see is the damage this shock causes to the tissue.

The term for this is hydrostatic shock, because it travels through the liquid medium in the living tissue, send-ing shock waves in all directions. When an animal is hit with a bullet traveling at supersonic velocities, the shock waves disrupt the central nervous system at the same time they’re destroying tissue. A deer-sized animal can be physically moved by the hydrostatic shock of a 50-grain bullet striking at 2500 f.p.s. Even though a 100-lb. animal weighs 14,000 times more than the bullet, the energy imparted by the small bullet is very destructive.

But no pellet can go that fast. Pellets are considered low-velocity projectiles when compared to the firearms world. There’s no hydrostatic shock associated with them—not at any speed that pellets can achieve! Even hollowpoint pellets and hollowpoint bullets traveling at airgun veloci-ties do not produce hydrostatic shock.

The future is in the past

For the airgun hunter, the future lies firmly in the past. Where modern firearm hunters have become accustomed to lightweight, high-velocity bullets doing incredible things on game over the past century, the airgun hunter needs to study history. He needs to turn his attention to the days of black powder, when a bullet traveling 1400 f.p.s. was considered very high velocity. In those days, it was more important to hit vital organs such as the heart and lungs, because that would cause certain death. However, that death did not come fast.

When someone shoots a deer or elk with a .45-caliber buffa-lo rifle, they have to hit the vital organs or the bullet may not prove fatal. An understanding of the target animal’s anatomy is important.

Hunters shooting high-velocity firearms can shoot game in the neck or abdomen with good results because of hydrostatic shock. But a buffalo rifle producing twice as much energy is less effective on game, unless vital organs or major bones are hit. That big, slow bullet just plows through the tissue, leaving behind a hole that’s not much larger than the bullet.

A 50-grain bullet from a .223 Remington may drop a whitetail deer that a 500-grain bullet from a .45/70 only wounds—depending on where the animal is hit. That’s because the light .223 bullet leaves all of its energy in the animal; but the big .45-caliber bullet slips right through, leaving only a quarter of its energy if major bones or vital organs are not hit. The airgun hunter must think like the hunter who shoots the buffalo rifle.

Velocity versus mass:

Which is better for airgun hunting?BY TOM GAYLORD

The 22/250 (left) sprang from the .250 Savage (250/3000) round, and a decade later the .220 Swift took velocity over 4,000 f.p.s. for the first time. It’s legendary what these cartridges can do on game when the right bullets are used.

The .22-caliber pellet on the left is considered large for most conventional air rifles. On the

right is a 405-grain .458 lead bullet used in both a .45/70 firearm and a Quackenbush .458 Long

Action air rifle for big game. The doorknob in the center is a 7-oz. slug that was the first airgun

bullet to generate 1,000 foot-pounds of energy at the muzzle—from a CO2 smoothbore!

Page 4: Gamo - PyramydAir.comcdn.pyramydair.com/downloads/2014-Pyramyd-Air... · Gamo. Whisper Fusion PRO air rifle. Incl. 3-9x40 AO scope & mount. ... airgun hunters, though, is the question

28

In fact, a modern big bore air rifle that shoots a 500-grain .45-caliber bullet at half the muzzle velocity of a centerfire buffalo rifle will still shoot all the way through a 2000-lb. bison, sideways, exiting on the far side. Unless vital organs are hit, that animal will not drop anytime soon. But, hit the heart of a full-grown bison with a .45-caliber air rifle bullet, and it’s just as effective as the same bullet driven twice as fast from a .45/70. Both bullets pass entirely through the animal and do major damage if they hit vital organs or large bones.

Smallbore airgun hunting

Smallbore airgun hunting is nothing more than a smaller version of large game hunting. You face the exact same ballistic challenge—namely that there’s no hydrostatic shock, regardless of the muzzle velocity of the pellet.

That’s why I always recommend hunting with .22-caliber pellets or larger, because they leave a larger channel through the game. It’s just as essential that pellets hit vital organs as it is for the bullets from a buffalo rifle to hit them. Because .177- and .20-caliber pellets are small, the chances of missing vital organs are increased.

And pellets don’t move game animals directly—regard-less of what people may say. Yes, a squirrel can move sideways after being hit by a pellet, but it’s the squirrel doing the moving—not the energy of the pellet. I’ve had cottontail rabbits jump several feet in the air after being hit in the heart by a pellet. But I’ve had deer do the same thing from bullet impacts. In fact, a heart-shot animal will often jump straight up—not from the energy of the pro-jectile but from involuntary muscle contractions resulting from the impact.

The airgun hunter has to study the anatomy of every animal he hunts—just as the hunters of larger game should. When I hunted in Germany, I was required to know the anatomy of each large game animal I pursued, so my bul-lets could have the greatest effect. I also had to demon-strate that I could keep my shots inside an 8-inch circle at 100 meters when shooting from the offhand supported position. That was the size of the heart-lung area of the deer I hunted, and the heart-lung shot was considered the best and most humane shot of all. Only one time did I miss that spot and hit the animal farther back, resulting in a gut shot. Though the cartridge was a .30-06 and the roe deer weighed only about 70 lbs. this was the only time I ever took a second shot in 13 deer harvested.

Bleedout is slow but sure

Archers know that when an animal is hit well, it’ll bleed out in several minutes. Until that happens, the animal may not appear to be affected by the shot. The same holds true for the airgun hunter who makes good body shots.

A brain shot is quicker and more absolute, but the brains of squirrels and cottontail rabbits are so small that it’s easy to miss altogether. And spine shots are to be avoided at all costs because of the likelihood of missing anything vital. Shoot for the heart/lungs, and you may still clip an artery if you miss the organs.

Because of this, it’s important that you don’t start pursuing the animal after it has been hit. Give it time to get away, lay down and stiffen up. With deer-sized animals, this may take 10 minutes; but if you run after them, the deer may put on an adrenalin-fueled burst of speed and get away before expiring.

This can be very hard for some hunters to watch. If they’re used to seeing an animal drop instantly or run 100 yards and fold up, it looks cruel to see the animal just stand there for several minutes. It does take minutes, rather than seconds, for the game to expire this way. The first time you see it, you’ll think your shot had no effect; but the animal will then stumble and fall. It happens faster with small game. With goats, sheep and deer, it takes a while. And with larger animals, such as elk and bison, it takes even longer. Just remember that this is the way it always happened before about 1895. Hunters of the past didn’t dwell on it because they knew nothing else. And bow hunters of today know this very well. You have to learn to think like them.

Shoot to hit the vitals!

The best advice I can give any airgun hunter is to learn your quarry and shoot to hit the vitals. Forget velocity, because it doesn’t matter to airguns, as long as the pellet penetrates adequately. Concentrate on leaving a large wound channel and hitting vitals.

Spend time learning the anatomy of your quarry. Don’t just learn where the organs are, but also how the skeleton is arranged. And with larger birds, learn that feathers are as tough as bones for pellets to penetrate.

If you’re going to spend time hunting with an airgun, make that time count. And reflect on the lessons of Scottish hunter W.D.M. “Karamojo” Bell, who killed as many as 800 elephants with a .275 Rigby rifle—better known as the 7x57mm Mauser. He knew the anatomy and made one-shot kills with a cartridge many consider appropriate for whitetail deer.

With knowledge of anatomy and knowing the ballistics of the pellet and rifle, an airgun hunter can consider himself well-armed. Anything less is unsportsmanlike.

“ I just got back from my first range trip with my new air pistol and just wanted to say thank you. I am an NRA pistol instructor and with the .22 ammo shortage I have not been able to shoot as much as I used to. One of the other instructors suggested using an air pistol but I only remembered the air guns from my childhood and they were not very accurate. Wow! The new air pistols simulate all aspects of shooting a center fire handgun except for the recoil! You have an excellent product and your shipping to Ann Arbor was crazy fast (next day). I will be recommending the use of air pistols as part of my students’ ongoing training and I will certainly be recommending Pyramyd Air to anyone who asks where they can acquire them. Jason

Let’s first define survival as a situation where your life depends on your actions. Survival is not living off the grid—it’s living when the grid no longer exists. There are no laws, and hunting will be done differently.

The most common type of airgun for a survival situation is the multi-pump pneumatic such as the Benjamin 392. What makes it somewhat better than spring-piston guns is lighter weight and the fact that it can be carried loaded and charged for a long time without degradation. A gas-spring gun fits this definition, too, and is therefore a candidate for survival, as long as it’s reliable enough to not be at risk of breaking down at an inopportune time. You don’t want anything that can easily break, wear out or run down (batteries) in your survival kit.

The basics

A survival airgun should be lightweight, rugged, powerful enough for the intended purpose—though this is not the same level of power that’s recommended for sport hunting—and accurate. Ten thousand airguns fit that definition, depending on who’s talking, so which do you need? I’ll make it real simple. You need a gun you can trust. When you can describe why you trust a certain airgun, then that’s the gun for you—probably.

Power

You don’t need a magnum airgun for small game; you need accuracy. Instead of 20 foot-pounds of muzzle energy, you must be able to hit an American quarter 10 times out of 10 at the distance you plan to hunt. That can be 15 yards or 50 yards—you and your chosen airgun will both define how far it is.

Reasonable game

There needs to be something to shoot at! Don’t plan on hunting turkey if turkeys don’t live where you do. If the yards are overrun with woodchucks like they are in Aber-deen, Maryland, plan on eating a lot of woodchuck. And get an air rifle that will take woodchuck. If the pasture shelters prairie chickens and pheasant the way it does in Aberdeen, South Dakota, plan for them. If you are trying to survive in downtown Los Angeles or Chicago you’ll be shooting feral pigeons and snow (white) geese found in city parks.

Larger game calls for more powerful airguns

What if you live in an area like Rapid City, South Dakota, where the city is overrun with deer? Can you take a deer with an airgun? You can and you will in a survival situa-tion. It doesn’t take a big bore airgun to do it, either. An AirForce Escape rifle in .25 caliber that will fire heavy bul-lets at over 100 foot-pounds energy is certainly enough to take deer-sized game with head shots.

Action beats intentions

Many intend to prepare, but only those who have already taken action will be prepared to survive. In your kit, you need a reliable airgun and accurate pellets—not good intentions.

Open sights

What exists and how do they work?Lots of people scope their air rifles these days, and

many rifles now come without open sights. In fact, it’s now possible to find shooters who have never used open sights and don’t have a clue how they work. Yes, open sights are the oldest type of aiming aid—they came into being right after people stopped just pointing the gun and hoping something would happen.

Believe it or not, pointing without aiming was still being done during the American Revolution! Both the British and colonial forces lined up in ranks on the battlefield, pointing their muzzles at the opposing forces. The rifle was used by small bands of colonial fighters and also by small groups of British soldiers—the Ferguson rifle at the Battle of Saratoga and, perhaps, elsewhere. But it was the unrifled musket that fought in overwhelming numbers and decided the fate of the war. And the musket wasn’t aimed! It was pointed at the enemy and hits beyond 40 yards were considered luck—good or bad, depending on the point of view.

The rifle first came into widespread use during the American Civil War. Although rifles had been used in wars since at least 1780, they were considered too slow to load and fire. The invention of the French Minié bullet allowed for rapid reloading on the battlefield and made rifles practical for the first time. But the forces using the rifles were still thinking like musket shooters, where massed charges won the day. Hence, we have slaughters like Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg.

Breechloading rifle and sights

After the Civil War, the U.S. Army undertook a lengthy de-velopment program to optimize the new breechloading, cartridge-firing rifle. From 1865 through 1872, they did tests that included tens of thousands of soldiers in the field. The rifle’s caliber was reduced from .58 to .50 and again to .45. At the end of the program, they’d created the most modern breechloading rifle that was already obsolete—the Trapdoor Springfield. Its ability to hold on a man-sized target out to 500 yards required the immedi-ate development of good sights. Let’s not get to that just yet. This is a good place to stop and look at sights over the ages.

First open sights

The first open sights were just on the muzzle of the gun and were more for alignment than for precise aiming.

As seen by the shooter, the early hand cannon had just a small front sight. It was for general alignment of the barrel.

When rear sights came into the picture, they weren’t very prominent at first. Shooter had to guess a lot and really learn their rifle before it would perform. But from where they were coming—the smoothbore musket—these rifles with sights seemed like a great leap forward. Shooters learned where to hold the front sight in relation to the rear sight to make the bullet strike where they wanted, and this became known as “Kentucky windage.”

This is the sight picture shooters had with early rifles. The v-notch was wide and shallow,

and the front bead was low on the barrel. There was a lot of guesstimating with this one!

After the Civil War, sights became more prominent and easier to see. Rear sights went from a shallow vee to a notch that was easy to see, and the front sights began to rise up from the barrel. By the 1880s, open sights had evolved into what we see today with some embellish-ments, such as buckhorn rear sights, which were used for enhanced Kentucky windage.

The peep sight—1884

In 1884, the U.S. Army put an advanced sight on their Trapdoor Springfield. It was called the Buffington, after the inventor, Col. Buffington. It marked the start of the American Army’s use of the peep sight—something they’re still doing in 2014.

The Buffington sight was decades ahead of its time. Not only did it have a peep that proved much faster for recruits to learn, it also adjusted for windage, which was not common on military sights. Because the sight was marked out to 1,400 yards, it also compensated for bullet drift from the right-hand rifling twist.

The Buffington sight was de-cades ahead of its time. It was both an open rear sight and a peep sight that increased sighting precision. It made the Trapdoor Springfield a real long-range rifle.

All U.S. military main battle rifles since 1884 have had peep sights—the Krag, 1903 Springfield, 03A3 Springfield, Garand, Johnson, M1 Carbine, M14, M16 and the current M4 carbine all have them. They’re easier and faster to learn than any other type of open sight, plus they’re more precise.

Is a peep sight an open sight?

While many would argue that a peep sight isn’t an open sight, they fit in that category better than any other. The kind of peep sights I’m talking about here are not the precision target sights found on expensive target rifles. They’re the sporting sights that were offered as options on sporting rifles of the 20th century. Compared to target sights that take practice to use, sporting peep sights are quicker to acquire than open-notch sights and generally deliver more precision. New shooters often avoid them, thinking they require training to use—when they’re actu-ally the easiest type of sight around.

36

With a peep sight, you look through the rear hole and align the front sight with the target. The rear hole is automatically centered by your eye. That makes peep sights faster to use and easier to learn.

Open sights evolve

Even the Buffington sight didn’t stop the development of open sights for both the military and commercial market. Other armies didn’t adopt the peep sight for various reasons, yet they continued to improve the rear sight as the ammunition evolved from slow-moving blackpowder rounds and large-caliber bullets to supersonic jacketed bullets in smaller calibers. The military developed good methods of rear sight elevation that were copied and simplified for the commercial market.

Mauser military rifle rear sight adjusts high for distances out to 1,400 meters. This sight has no provision for

windage. The military designers felt windage was best adjusted by the maker and left alone after that. This

sight began its life in 1898, and this one was updated for the current ammunition in the 1930s.

This rear sight is found on a Winchester hunting rifle made in the 1930s. The elevator is a simple

stepped steel ramp, but it works very well. Windage is applied by loosening the rear sight notch and

sliding it from side to side on the sight base.

In the 1960s, airguns were offered with rear sights that gave the shooter a selection of up to four different notches to use. This allowed the changing of the front sight blade, and the ability to select a rear notch that fits best with the width of the front blade or post. Different eyes have different requirements.

This Diana model 27 rear sight from the 1970s has 4 different notches from which the shooter can choose. Then, the shooter can change the front sight to dif-ferent shapes.

The rear sight on the Feinwerkbau Sport rifle launched in 2014 continues the tradition of offering multiple notches on the rear sight. It includes a rotatable rear sight leaf.

The rectangular notch rear sight has 1.9mm, 2.2mm and 2.5mm widths. The u-notch has a 2mm width.

Fiberoptics

The latest innovation on open sights involves the installation of fiberoptic tubes. These tubes gather light and glow with a bright red or green dot. They’re faster to acquire than unlit sights but do require bright conditions to work. When they don’t glow, they appear like conventional open sights.

While they’re easier to acquire when lit, fiberoptics sacrifice some of the precision of open sights. That’s because the fiberoptic bead in front is so large that it covers more of the target than a conventional front post would. For hunting, it might be best to see that bright bead against a dull-colored animal; but for target shooting, the bead covers too much area.

The red fiberoptic front sight tube glows brightly when the light is strong.

The green fiberoptic tube is bent in a semicircle, revealing two bright green dots at the rear. When sighting, these are put on either side of the red dot in the front.

Where will we go next?

There’s a strong push to supply only optical sights with airguns and firearms, alike, because many makers feel open sights are too difficult to learn. Simple optics are now provided on some military rifles, phasing out even the best peep sights. But, as we advance, we have to keep in mind that a good open sight is so simple that it will continue to function under all conditions. That’s a lot to give up for convenience.

The next open sight will have to be more intuitive than even the simplest peep sights of today. There have been some attempts at doing this, and it’s only a matter of time until we see what comes next. Will it come on an airgun? We’ll have to wait and see.

Should you buy a multi-pump?

Open sights

What exists and how do they work?

BY TOM GAYLORD

You’ve been thinking about buying a multi-pump pneu-matic air rifle, but you aren’t sure they’re for you. What should you think about?

I’ve answered this question for many people, and it boils down to your personality more than anything. Multi-pump pneumatics operate at a slower pace than other airguns. They take time to fill. Some shooters enjoy this, while others find the guns too slow and cumbersome.

What’s special about a multi-pump pneumatic?

Let me compare them to breakbarrel spring rifles. Many shooters feel that breakbarrel springers are the simplest kind of airgun. But did you know that the multi-pump is also simple and straightforward? You don’t need anything other than pellets and the gun, just like the breakbarrel. However, the multi-pump has a couple advantages over any spring gun. First, it’s several pounds lighter for the same power. While today’s crop of multi-pumps top out at around 13-14 foot-pounds, they don’t have to. Thirty years ago Japanese Sharp air rifles delivered over 20 foot-pounds in a 6 lb. gun.

A second potential advantage is the trigger. The multi-pump trigger doesn’t have to hold back more than 100 lbs. of spring tension and can be made much sweeter and lighter than a spring gun’s trigger. The guns currently be-ing sold don’t have such great triggers, but they could be made better with some careful gunsmithing.

A third advantage is the potential for greater accuracy. A multi-pump fires without recoil, so there’s no need for any special holding technique to make it accurate. This benefit is offset somewhat by the use of less expensive

barrels, but the potential is there. Years ago, Daystate made a multi-pump that generated 25 foot-pounds in .22 caliber and was as accurate as a PCP. It also had a high-grade trigger that completed the package. Of course it was not cheap, but you got what you paid for.

The final advantage is one the spring gun people call a disadvantage—the fact that the gun has to be pumped up to shoot. Where a spring gun gets cocked one time, a multi-pump has to be pumped from 3 to 10 times, de-pending on what you want to do. Those who don’t care for them say this is very slow and cumbersome. But turn that around and you realize that the multi-pump gives you a choice of power that spring guns cannot. Springers are either cocked or not. Multi pumps can shoot slow for indoor target practice or fast and hard to drop squirrels up in trees.

One disadvantage is that multi-pumps are difficult to scope. While mounts do exist, they are compromises at best and fragile compared to other airgun mounts. Of course, you can always use the open sights.

This will never be resolved

Because people’s tastes are personal and cannot be changed through reason, this debate will never be resolved. But now you know the things to think about when contemplating the purchase of a multi-pump pneumatic airgun.

”“I had the pleasure of ordering an Air Soft pistol from your company. Being a career retailer it was an absolute pleasure dealing with your staff. Getting a “we can do” attitude, instead of “You’ll have to contact the manufacturer” was indicative of first class customer service! Something rarely seen in today’s “Internet Shopping”. Aaron
