As Red so eloquently stated in the 1994 classic The Shawshank Redemption, “Geology is the study of pressure and time. That’s all it takes re-ally, pressure, and time…”Now, Red may have included an extra thing into

the combination while describing how Andy ex-ited the prison but a pair of Northeast football/basketball players could become geologists when their athletic careers come to a close. Northeast defensive lineman Lavon Hooks of

Atlanta and defensive back Kareem Brown of New Albany know all too well about pressure and time. Not only are Hooks and Brown standouts on the

gridiron for the Tiger football team but they also are two-sport athletes adding to their pressure by donating their time to the Tiger basketball team when football season ends.Brown and Hooks know that to become a col-

legiate athlete, it is all about growing up and one part of growing up is learning how to manage one’s time in the most useful factor. For some, learning good time management

skills is a life-long venture while for others, time management is an attribute that is instilled into them at a young age.For college athletes, managing one’s time is of

the utmost importance because not only does one have to figure out when practice is or what time to show up for a game but somewhere in the mix, an athlete must manage to also be a student.National organizations have placed an emphasis

on the word “Student” in the phrase “Student-Athlete” and Northeast athletes are no different. Not only do Northeast athletes have to learn to

balance life on and off the gridiron, hardwood, baseball and softball fields, golf course or tennis courts, Tiger and Lady Tiger athletes must also find time for academics, a social life and for im-portant events like eating and sleeping. Some athletes take the pressure to a new level

by accomplishing great time management skills while participating in more than one sport at Northeast.Hooks clocked a season on the hardwood at

Marion Military Institute in Georgia before com-ing to Northeast in the fall of 2011 as a member of the Tiger football team. Brown is completing his second pressure-filled season after graduating from New Albany High School.“When you come to junior college, you have to

be more mentally prepared and come every day to work,” Brown said. “There is always someone just as good as you – if not better than you – and if they are always working as hard as you, you have just got to come in every day and compete.” Through three games, Hooks is the second

leading tackler on the Tiger football team while Brown is the third leading tackler.Hooks has 19 tackles through the first three

weeks of the season including six solo stops and 13 assists but where Hooks has been the biggest factor is in the sack department.Hooks currently has six sacks through the first

three games for minus 17 yards and has a total of seven tackles for loss for minus 26 yards and one forced fumble.Brown is not too far behind his teammate with

17 tackles – 13 solos and four assists – and the New Albany native has a half tackle for loss for minus two yards and three pass breakups on the season.Hooks had his break-out performance in the Ti-

gers 30-21 win over the Jones County Bobcats on Saturday, September 8 when the Atlanta native registered 10 tackles and four sacks in the Tigers first win over the Bobcats since 2005.On the hardwood, the roles pressure is the same.During the 2011-12 season, Brown and

Hooks appeared in a combined 38 games for the Tigers. Brown clocked 20 games for David Rob-bins’ Tigers while Hooks appeared in 18 contests last year. In his 20 games for the Tigers, Brown scored

48 points for Northeast with 18 of those mark-ers coming via the charity stripe where the New Albany native shot 75-percent. Brown hit 36.3 percent of his attempts from be-

yond the arc and was fourth on the team in assists averaging 1.25 assists per game.

Hooks, on the other hand, appeared in 18 games for the Tiger basketball team but in his limited time, the Atlanta native made an impact. Hooks tallied 184 points – good enough for a

10.22 points per game average which was third on the team in scoring behind solo sport stars Acie Vance (16.818) and Jermaine Hollimon (11.773).Hooks also led the team in field goal percentage

(59.81) connecting on 64 of his 107 attempts on the season and pulled down a team-leading 162 rebounds on the year.Hooks’ nine rebound per game average not only

led the Tigers but led the Mississippi Association of Community/Junior Colleges (MACJC) and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XXIII in that statistical cat-egory.In between all that time on the gridiron and

hardwood, Brown and Hooks have found time to balance athletics, academics, social life, breath-ing and eating. However, time is what is running out on the duo

as well. Only six regular season games remain in the 2012 football season and while Brown is don-ning the Black and Gold for the Tiger basketball season one last time, Hooks will be looking for a new school. After playing for Marion Military Institute dur-

ing the 2010-11 season, Hooks is ineligible to play a second year with the Tiger basketball team so now the only pressure the Atlanta native will feel is the decision on where to further his foot-ball and maybe basketball career.
