FIRST PITCH

Texas Tech will be on the road this weekend to play its second Big 12 road series of the season at Kansas, March 30-April 1. The Red Raiders are 1-5 in Big 12 play following a road series at Baylor (0-3) and hosting Oklahoma (1-2) last weekend. The Jayhawks will host the Red Raiders for their Big 12 home opener after dropping all three games at Baylor last weekend. Kansas has only played three home games this season while Tech is taking a brief break from playing 16-of-19 games at home from March 20-April 18.

INSIDE THE SERIES Texas Tech leads the all-time series with Kansas, 31-16 and with a slim 12-9 advantage in games played in Law-rence. In fact, Tech’s most recent Big 12 road series sweep was against the Jayhawks in Lawrence in 2004. Tech swept KU last season in Lubbock and took two of three against them in Lawrence in 2010. Although, Tech has won just three of its last nine against Kansas in its last three series in Lawrence. Tech won a pair of one-run games against KU a year ago, including the series opener, 3-2, in 10 innings.

For the 19th consecutive year, the entire Texas Tech baseball game schedule will be broadcast live on the Texas Tech Sports Network and made available to its statewide affi liates. The Voice of Texas Tech Baseball, Robert Giovannetti, will handle the play-by-play duties while Dr. Mike Gustafson will provide color commentary. Giovannetti has a 30-minute pre-game show and interviews players and coaches following each game. Games will be carried locally on the fl agship station of the Texas Tech Sports Network, Double T 104.3 FM and in Hobbs, N.M. on 1390 AM. Fans who are located outside of the listening areas can follow the Red Raiders online through RaiderVision All-Access at www.texastech.com. Live audio is streamed for every game both home and on the road.

RED RAIDER BASEBALL WITH DAN SPENCER WEEKLY RADIO SHOW

Fans and media alike can listen to Red Raider Baseball with Dan Spencer (radio show) beginning on Thursday, February 16. The show will be hosted by Robert Giovannetti and will air live on KTTU 104.3 FM between 6 and 7 p.m. The show will air live on location at Rudy’s Country Store and Bar-B-Q on South Loop 289 and Slide Road. MEDIA CREDENTIALS

- Media members wishing to cover the Texas Tech baseball team at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffi n Park during the season must be issued a working credential from the Texas Tech Athletics Communications Offi ce.- All requests for both media and photo credentials must be made in writing at least two days in advance of the game date to Scott Lacefi eld, Associate Director of Athletics Communications (email: scott.lacefi [email protected]).- Requests are honored from sports editors of daily and weekly newspapers, editors of sports periodicals, sports directors of radio and television stations who broadcast regularly scheduled daily sports reports and talk shows and collegiate baseball websites.

DAN SPENCER & PLAYER INTERVIEWS

Practices are open to the media and the public. Practices will normally begin at 2:15 p.m. and end around 5 p.m. Interviews will begin on the fi eld down the left-fi eld line 30 minutes prior to the start of practice. The normally scheduled off day is Monday. All media in attendance are required to view practice from the stands. No media will be allowed on the fi eld once interviews are complete. To arrange a phone interview with Dan Spencer, contact Scott Lacefi eld. Coach Spencer is available for interviews on scheduled media availability days and following each game. The Texas Tech clubhouse is CLOSED to the media. Texas Tech players and coaches will be made available in front of the Texas Tech dugout following a brief cooling off period following the game.

BIG 12 PLAYERS OF THE WEEK



Dan Spencer is 101-97 overall and 38-49 in Big 12 play in four seasons as head coach of the Red Raiders. Named the eighth head coach in Texas Tech history during the summer of 2008, Spencer has wasted no time rebuilding the Tech program. Spencer has led Texas Tech to 86 wins since taking over as head coach in 2009, and this past season guided his program to 33 victories - the Red Raiders most wins in a season since 2005. Included in Spencer’s success as the skipper have been 24 victories against nationally-ranked op-ponents, a 56-30 record at Dan Law Field, three consecutive seasons with an increase in wins (25 in 2009, 28 in 2010, 33 in 2011), winning 13 conference series and mentoring 19 players since joining the Tech program as associate head coach in 2008 that have been drafted or signed free agent in the Major League Baseball Draft. In fact, fi ve of Spencer’s 19 draft picks have been taken in the top-10 rounds.

The Red Raider faithful have also taken notice of Spencer’s guidance to the program as Tech ranked 24th in the nation in 2011 averaging 2,771 fans per game. The Red Raiders average attendance marked the program’s fi fth highest all-time and the highest since 2002. Spencer has led Tech to three consecutive appearances at the Big 12 Championship, something that hadn’t been done at Tech since 2004-06. Spencer’s 86 victories in three seasons at Texas Tech rank second all-time among Red Raider head coaches during their fi rst three seasons at the helm (Larry Hays - 1987-89, 87 wins). In addition, Spencer recorded his 50th career home win in 74 tries, which made him the fastest Texas Tech head coach ever to win 50 career home games (previous mark set by Kal Segrist - 76 games). The Red Raiders never-say-die attitude under Spencer has led them to 43 come-from behind wins under Spencer in three seasons. On the other side of things, Texas Tech has been nearly impossible to defeat with a lead late in the game with a 78-1 record under Spencer when holding a lead after eight innings. The 2011 season saw many highlights for Spencer and the Red Raiders, among them were winning on the road and during the midweek. Tech went 11-3 during midweek competition and won 10 road games, the program’s most since 2001. In fact, Texas Tech swept three midweek road/neutral site series which set a new school record. Spencer has never avoided playing strong competition. The past two seasons the Red Raiders have played 45 games against ranked opponents. In 2011, Texas Tech led the league playing 20 games against ranked programs during the regular season. The previous year the Red Raiders took the fi eld 25 times against ranked foes. Accolades came pouring in for the Red Raiders in 2011 while four players were named to fi ve national award watch lists, including National Pitcher of the Year (RHP John Neely), Midseason Stopper of the Year (RHP John Neely), Johnny Bench Award (C Bo Altobelli), John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year (RHP/OF David Paiz) and Brooks Wallace Award (SS Kelby Tomlinson). Neely went on to earn All-America honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and from CollegeBaseballInsider.com while Tomlinson became the fi rst Big 12 Conference player ever to be awarded the American Baseball Coaches Association Rawlings Division I Gold Glove Award (SS). Spencer, 46, rejoined the Texas Tech Baseball family on July 2, 2007 when he was named associate head coach on the staff of former head coach Larry Hays. He spent the 2008 season in that role where he coached the pitchers and catchers and headed Tech’s recruiting front. His 2008 pitching staff produced two top-10 round MLB draft picks in juniors Zach Stewart and James Leverton, both of which had never been drafted prior to that season. Stewart was taken in the third round by the Cincinnati Reds while Leverton was taken in the eighth round by the Chicago Cubs. Prior to his arrival at Texas Tech, he spent 11 seasons at Oregon State, the last three as associate head coach, where he served as pitching/catching coach and recruiting coordinator. His pitching staff s during the last two seasons of his Oregon State tenure were instrumental in helping the Beavers become the fi rst back-to-back College World Series Cham-pions since LSU in the late 1990s. In those two seasons, his staff s compiled 3.41 and 3.48 cumulative ERAs while leading the team to 50-16 and 49-18 respective records. His group led the Pac-10 in ERA in both 2005 and 2006 while his bullpen helped pave the way to consecutive national titles by contributing 20-plus saves in both 2006 and 2007. Under his leadership, the Beavers had three pitchers and one catcher named to All-America teams and seven play-ers drafted in the top 10 rounds of the MLB Draft. Eddie Kunz, the ace of the 2007 staff , and catcher Mitch Canham, the squad’s leading hitter, were both fi rst round draft selections in the 2007 MLB Draft. His collegiate coaching career began at the junior college level six years before arriving at Oregon State, as he landed his fi rst job as an assistant coach at Tacoma Community College in Tacoma, Wash., in 1991. After just one season in Tacoma, he picked up his fi rst head coaching position as he took over the program at Green River Community College in 1992. While at Green River, he compiled a record of 131-67 between 1992 and 1996.

BARNES LOOKING TO BECOME 4TH RED RAIDER EVER WITH 30 CAREER HR/100 BB

Texas Tech junior Barrett Barnes is one walk away from becoming just the fourth player in school history with 30 career home runs and 100 career walks. In 140 career games played, Barnes is batted .322 with 42 doubles, 30 home runs, 118 RBI and 99 walks. The only three Tech players with 30 HR/100 BB are Clint Bryant (1993-96, 44 HR/140 BB), Keith Ginter (1997-98, 34 HR/129 BB) and Mike Humphreys (41 HR/116 BB).

BARNES BECOMES 12TH RED RAIDER EVER WITH 30 CAREER HOMERS

Barrett Barnes hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season and 30th career against New Mexico State on Tuesday, March 27, at Rip Griffi n Park. Barnes became just the 12th player in Texas Tech history to hit 30 career home runs.

JAMODRICK McGRUDER ENTERS WEEKEND WITH FIVE STRAIGHT MULTI-HIT GAMES

Jamodrick McGruder is on a tear as he enters the weekend with fi ve consecutive multi-hit games (Mar. 21-27). During his last fi ve games, McGruder is batting .650 (13-for-20) with eight runs, two doubles, three triples, four RBI, three walks and two stolen bases. McGruder is the fi rst Red Raider with fi ve straight multi-hit games since Nick Popescu tallied seven straight in 2010 (.545, 18-for-33).

Jamodrick McGruder has reached base safely in 23-of-25 games this season. Texas Tech ranks 20th in the nation in average home attendance with 2,795 fans on aver-age attending Texas Tech home games. The Red Raiders also rank 21st in the nation in total home attendance with 44,720 fans at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffi n Park. Tech’s 20th place ranking in the national attendance leaders places them third among Big 12 programs, trail-ing only Texas and Texas A&M.

Texas Tech had several impressive attendance marks during the Oklahoma series, the fi rst coming on Saturday with 4,187 fans in attendance, marking the most fans at a Red Raider baseball home game since 2006 (April 21 vs. No. 15 Oklahoma - 4,407). The three-game series had a total attendance of 10,936, which marked the largest attendance for a three-game home series since March 26-28, 2010 when Tech hosted No. 8 Texas and 11,484 fans were in attendance.

EIGHT-GAME MIDWEEK WIN STREAK SNAPPED AGAINST NEW MEXICO STATE

The Red Raiders started the year with a perfect 6-0 record in midweek games and with an eight-game midweek winning streak dating back to last season. The streak was snapped on Tuesday, March 27 with a 7-6 loss at home against New Mexico State. The eight-game win streak in midweek action began with a two-game series sweep at Michigan in 2011. The midweek winning streak spanned from May 10, 2011-March 21, 2012).

JOHN NEELY ENTERS THE GAME = OPPONENT POWER OUTAGE

Texas Tech All-American closer John Neely has pitched 86.0 consecutive innings without allowing a home run, which includes his last 38 appearances. The streak dates back to March 26, 2010 against No. 8 Texas (DH Kevin Keyes led off the top of the fourth with a solo HR to left-center fi eld in Lubbock). In fact, Neely became the fi rst Red Raider pitcher in over 16 years to not allow a home run during a season (min. 25 IP) in 2011.

BARRETT BARNES CLOSING IN ON TEXAS TECH BASEBALL IMMORTALITY

Texas Tech junior center fi elder Barrett Barnes (2010-12) is closing in on the most elite company in Tech history with a number of career off ensive stats milestones. In nine cat-egories, Barnes is close to joining a very exclusive group, in fact that group only includes one former player - the best player in school history, Clint Bryant, who was a three-time All-American during his four-year career (1993-96) and is the only Red Raider player to have his jersey number retired. Barnes is looking to join Bryant as the only Texas Tech players in the history of the 63-year program to have a .300 batting average, 150 runs, 500 at-bats, 150 hits, 40 doubles, 30 home runs, 100 RBI, 100 walks and 50 stolen bases. REID REDMAN TO MISS TIME WITH A FRACTURED SECOND METATARSAL IN FOOT

Snapping a streak of 81 consecutive starts at third base, senior Reid Redman will be out of the Tech lineup with a fractured second metatarsal in his left foot. Redman’s x-ray discovering the fracture was taken on Saturday, March 24. There has been no timetable set for Redman’s return to the lineup. Redman’s last game played was during the Oklahoma series opener.

McGRUDER: 114 CONSECUTIVE AT-BATS WITHOUT HITTING INTO A DOUBLE PLAY

Jamodrick McGruder had a streak of 114 consecutive at-bats without hitting into a double play. That streak was snapped on Saturday, March 24 against No. 27 Oklahoma. Before the streak came to a close, McGruder’s last time to hit into a ground-ball double play was on April 22, 2011. McGruder has gone 64 at-bats this season along with the fi nal 31 at-bats of the 2011 season without hitting into a groundball double play.

Texas Tech had a memorable two-game stretch when it swept a midweek series from Alabama A&M by scores of 21-1 and 25-5. Texas Tech accomplished many achievements that hadn’t happened in a number of years, including: - Scoring 25 runs in a game (March 6, 2004 - 30 vs. Harvard) - Scored 46 runs in back-to-back games (March 6, 2004 - 48 runs vs. Harvard in DH). - Consecutive 20-run games (May 8-9, 2003 - vs. Woff ord... 20-9, 20-10). - 40 run margin of victory in consecutive games (March 24-25, 1997) - 23 base hits at home (March 6, 2004 - 24 vs. Harvard).

The Red Raiders started the season holding their opponents to six runs or fewer in 14 straight games. That is the longest streak for the Red Raiders to start a season since 1986 (16 games). The streak was snapped in the 15th game of the season when TCU scored seven runs in a 7-4 win over Texas Tech on Monday, Mar. 12 in Fort Worth.

RED RAIDERS EARN FIRST ROAD NON-CONF WIN OVER TOP-10 TEAM SINCE 2001

Texas Tech defeated No. 10 Arizona State 8-4 on Tuesday, March 6, marking the Red Raiders fi rst win on the road against a top-10 ranked non-conference opponent since May 27, 2001, when Tech defeated No. 1 Cal State Fullerton 11-5 at the Fullerton Regional. It also marked Tech’s fi rst win on the road against a nationally-ranked non-conference opponent since February 15, 2005, when Tech won at No. 22 TCU (7-4).

BO ALTOBELLI NAMED TO JOHNNY BENCH AWARD WATCH LIST

For the second consecutive year, Texas Tech catcher Bo Altobelli has been named to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List, an award given annually to the nation’s top collegiate catcher. Altobelli is one of just 11 catchers in the nation to appear on the watch list in both 2011 and 2012. Freshman Tim Proudfoot recorded his fourth triple in his 13th career game making him the fastest Red Raider during the last 11 years to record four triples. The previous mark was held by Jose Delgado who notched his fourth triple during his 32nd game as a Red Raider. In fact, Proudfoot’s four triples are the most by a Red Raider since Roger Kieschnick tallied fi ve during the 2007 season. TECH PITCHERS MAKING THEIR MARK EARLY IN THE SEASON

Texas Tech started the season 8-2 in large part because of its pitching. The Red Raiders received 10 consecutive fi ve-plus inning starts from its starters. That marks the fi rst time in over 15 years that Tech has received 10 straight fi ve-plus inning starts to open a season.

TEXAS TECH MAKING SEVERAL APPEARANCES ON TELEVISION THIS SEASON

Texas Tech will make four appearances on television this season (not including web streaming) with games televised on FSN and Fox34 News Now. The Red Raiders will play one game on FSN (May 19 - vs. Kansas State) and two games on Fox34 News Now (April 6 - vs. Texas; April 28 - vs. Missouri).

McGRUDER NAMED TO HOUSTON COLLEGE CLASSIC ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM

Junior Jamodrick McGruder was named to the Houston College Classic All-Tournament Team as he led all players at the six-team classic with four walks and three stolen bases. McGruder also tallied a .300 batting average (3-for-10) while scoring three runs.

TECH GOES 5-0 IN BROOKS WALLACE CLASSIC - NINE MAKE ALL-TOURNEY TEAM

Texas Tech fi nished the third-annual Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic with a perfect 5-0 record. The Red Raiders placed nine players on the All-Tournament team, including center fi elder Barrett Barnes who was named the Most Outstanding Player. Joining Barnes on the All-Tournament team were Bo Altobelli (C), Scott LeJeune (1B), Tim Proudfoot (SS), Reid Redman (3B), Jamodrick McGruder (OF), Duke von Schamann (SP), Shane Broyles (SP) and Jamen Parten (RP). Barnes fi nished the four-day classic batting .438 (7-for-16) with seven runs, two doubles, two home runs, eight RBI, six walks, four stolen bases, .591 on-base percentage and .938 slugging percentage.

LeJEUNE & BARNES REACH 100-CAREER RBI MILESTONE

Texas Tech juniors Barrett Barnes and Scott LeJeune each tallied their 100th career RBI over the second weekend of the season. LeJeune reached the milestone during his 118th career game played, making him the sixth fastest Red Raider to reach 100-career RBI during the past decade. Barnes reached 100 career RBI in his 120th game, making him the eighth fastest Tech player to reach 100 RBI. BROYLES MAKES BACK-TO-BACK 7 INNING STARTS TO BEGIN TECH CAREER

Shane Broyles became the fi rst Tech pitcher in over 11 years to make back-to-back seven-inning starts to begin his career. Broyles earned the win in his career debut pitching 7.1 in-nings with six strikeouts against Tennessee Tech (2/18) and followed up that performance by pitching 7.2 innings with three strikeouts in a win over No. 18 St. John’s (2/26).

BACK-TO-BACK GAMES WITHOUT ALLOWING EXTRA-BASE HIT

The Red Raiders pitchers went back-to-back games (vs. Northern Illinois/vs. No. 18 St. John’s) without allowing an extra-base hit. It marked the fi rst time in over 11 years the Red Raiders have gone back-to-back games without allowing an extra-base hit.

TECH EARN 1ST WIN OVER A TOP-25 NON-CONF OPPONENT AT HOME SINCE 2006

Texas Tech’s victory over No. 18 St. John’s in the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic opener on Feb. 24 marked more than just a win over a top-25 ranked opponent, it marked Tech’s fi rst over a top-25 non-conference team at home since April 17, 2006 when the Red Raiders handed No. 10 Arizona State a 7-2 loss in Lubbock.

BARNES COLLECTS FIRST CAREER INSIDE-THE-PARK HOME RUN

Barrett Barnes is used to hitting home runs, he now has 27 for his career, but his 26th career home run came in a diff erent fashion as he had to leg it out while hitting the ball of the top of the center fi eld wall and then made it around the bases for a three-run, inside-the-park home run. The homer gave Tech a 4-1 advantage over No. 18 St. John’s, which they would end up holding for the win. It was the fi rst inside-the-park home run by a Red Raider since February 27, 2010 (Nick Popescu, 3-run HR, vs. Bethune-Cookman).

PAIZ TOSSES 5 NO-HIT INNINGS DURING SEASON DEBUT VS. NORTHERN ILLINOIS

Texas Tech sophomore David Paiz became the fi rst Red Raider to carry a no-hitter through fi ve innings since April 20, 2007 (A.J. Ramos - 5.1 IP, vs. Kansas) during his season debut when he pitched fi ve innings with one walk and four strikeouts. Paiz served the majority of his freshman season as the Red Raiders Friday-night starter.

RED RAIDERS HOLD NORTHERN ILLINOIS WITHOUT A HIT FOR EIGHT INNINGS

Texas Tech had four pitchers (David Paiz, Jerad McCrummen, Andre Wheeler, Trey Masek)combine on a no-hitter through eight innings against Northern Illinois on Monday, Feb. 27, while the Huskies fi nally broke into the hit column in the top of the ninth inning. The last time the Red Raiders held an opponent without a hit through eight innings was on Feb. 20, 2006 against Eastern New Mexico State during a 16-0 victory. Also in that game, Eastern New Mexico tallied two hits in the ninth inning.

NINE-GAME HOMESTAND

Texas Tech opened the season with an 8-1 record during its nine-game homestand. It marked Tech’s best record during a season-opening extended homestand (7-plus games) since the Red Raiders opened the 1997 season with an 11-1 record during a 12-game homestand. It also marked the fourth consecutive season that the Red Raiders had began the season with a homestand of at least six games. Last season Tech opened the campaign with a school-record 18-game homestand (12-6 record). STARTING STRONG

Texas Tech started the season with three consecutive starting pitchers (von Schamann, Broyles, Shellhorn) tallying at least seven innings pitched. This marked a fi rst for the Red Raiders through its opening three games since 1999 when Shane Wright, Brad Ralston and Brandon Roberson each went at least seven innings as starters. In Tech’s fourth game, Daniel Coulombe 5.1 innings, which marked the fi rst time Tech had four consecutive start-ers pitch at least fi ve innings to open a season since 1999.

BROYLES/SHELLHORN MAKE IMPRESSIVE DEBUTS

A pair of juniors - RHP Shane Broyles and LHP Rusty Shellhorn - made their Texas Tech debuts on Opening Weekend while both made impressive starts. Broyles (transferred from Seminole State) pitched 7.1 innings while allowing fi ve runs (4 ER) on six hits with six strikeouts and didn’t allow a walk. It marked the fi rst time since 2008 (RHP Nathan Karns, 7 SO vs. Oral Roberts) that a Red Raider had struck out at least six in a career (starting) debut. The following day Shellhorn went seven scoreless innings allowing just four hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Shellhorn became the fi rst Red Raider in over 11 years to pitch seven scoreless innings in his Texas Tech starting debut.

TECH NOTCHES FIRST ONE-HITTER IN OVER 11 YEARS ON OPENING DAY

RHP Duke von Schamann and RHP Trey Masek combined for a one-hitter on Opening Day in Tech’s 4-1 win over No. 31 Missouri State. von Schamann started and went seven innings (1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO) while Masek pitched the fi nal two innings with three strikeouts to earn his fi rst career save. Last season the Red Raiders had three pitchers combine (Cou-lombe, Brennan Stewart, Neely) on a two-hit shutout on Opening Day against Western Michigan (8-0).

PROUDFOOT EARNS RED RAIDER CLASSIC MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER

Freshman SS Tim Proudfoot was named the Red Raider Classic’s Most Outstanding Player while batting .429 (6-for-14) with three runs, two triples and six RBI while leading all play-ers at the classic with 17 assists from the shortstop position. Proudfoot began his career with three straight multiple RBI games, including hitting a two-run triple on Opening Day to give Tech a three-run cushion they would hold against Missouri State (4-1).

Texas Tech won the Red Raider Classic with the best record (3-1) among the fi eld of com-petition. Tech ended the Red Raider Classic with eight players being named to the All-Tournament team. Joining SS Tim Proudfoot - who was named the Most Outstanding Player - was C Bo Altobelli, 1B Scott LeJeune, 2B Jamodrick McGruder, 3B Reid Redman, CF Barrett Barnes, SP Duke von Schamann and SP Rusty Shellhorn.

TEXAS TECH ON OPENING DAY

With its 4-1 win over No. 31 Missouri State, Texas Tech improved to 40-23 on Opening Day, which includes a 13-1 record since 1999. Fourth-year head coach Dan Spencer has led Tech to four consecutive wins on Opening Day, including an 8-0 shutout over Western Michigan last season. It marked Tech’s fi rst shutout on Opening Day since a 21-0 victory over How-ard on Jan. 26, 2001. Overall, the shutout was just the fi fth all-time for the Red Raiders on Opening Day (1966, 1986, 1993, 2001, 2011). Texas Tech’s only loss over the past 12 years on Opening Day came against then-No. 19 Louisiana-Lafayette, 0-4, at the Roadrunner Classic in San Antonio on Feb. 23, 2008.



OPENING DAY IN LUBBOCK

Texas Tech has been nearly unbeatable when hosting Opening Day on their home turf with a 27-5 all-time record. The Red Raiders have won 13 straight Opening Day games at home, dating back to a 1-10 loss against TCU (2/11/97). In fact, since 1986, Texas Tech is 19-1 on Opening Day in its home ballpark. This year marked Tech’s fourth straight Opening Day at home.

DAN SPENCER IN SEASON OPENERS

Texas Tech has won four consecutive Opening Day games under head coach Dan Spencer. Spencer has become just the second head coach in Texas Tech history to win four consecu-tive Opening Day games. Spencer joined Kal Segrist who won a school-record fi ve con-secutive Opening Day games to begin his 16-year tenure as head coach of the Red Raiders.

COMING OUT RUNNIN’

Once again the Red Raiders came out running on Opening Day with four stolen bases against Missouri State. The past four Opening Day games the Red Raiders have 19 stolen bases.. In 2009, the Red Raiders swiped six bases (Rueda 3; Reed 2; Kenworthy) against Southern Utah, in 2010 Tech grabbed fi ve stolen bases (Barnes 2; LeJeune, Mayo, Hagen) and last season Tech notched four stolen bases (Popescu 2, Redman, Tomlinson) and this season Tech posted four against Missouri State (Altobelli 2, Barnes, Moore).

BARRETT BARNES CONTINUES OPENING DAY SUCCESS

Junior Barrett Barnes continued his success on Opening Day as he went 1-for-3 with a double, run scored and stolen base. Barnes is now 6-for-10 on Opening Day with fi ve runs, two doubles, three home runs, eight RBI and three stolen bases.

TEXAS TECH RETURNS 19 LETTERWINNERS

The Red Raiders return 19 letterwinners from last year’s team, giving them back a high percentage of nearly every off ensive and pitching category. Overall, Tech returns eight po-sition players who started at least 32 games and 10 pitchers who threw at least 20 innings last season. JOHN NEELY & BARRETT BARNES RECEIVE PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA HONORS

Texas Tech has had two players show up consistently in preseason All-America teams as senior RHP closer John Neely and junior CF Barrett Barnes have combined for six preseason All-American accolades. Neely, a third team All-America selection last season by the NCB-WA, has earned preseason honors from NCBWA (second team) and College Baseball Insider (second team). Barnes has picked up four preseason All-America awards from Baseball America (third team), Perfect Game (third team), College Baseball Insider (honorable men-tion) and College Sports Madness (fourth team). In fact, Barnes has collected a total of 22 preseason awards from numerous media outlets and publications.

RED RAIDERS SHUTOUT TEXAS TECH ALUMS, 6-0

Texas Tech newcomer RHP Shane Broyles dominated in the third-annual alumni game as he tossed 4.1 perfect innings with eight strikeouts to lead the current Red Raiders over their alums, 6-0, on Saturday, Feb. 11 at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffi n Park. Texas Tech im-proved to 3-0 all-time against its alumni. The alumni team did feature 11 players who had been drafted with four All-Americans. Freshman shortstop Tim Proudfoot led all hitters going 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI. Four Red Raider pitchers combined to strike out 16 batters while allowing just two walks and gave up just one base hit.

GAME NOTES

RED RAIDERS ON THE FALL ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL

The Texas Tech baseball program had 18 student-athletes who received academic honor roll status following the fall semester. Nine Tech players earned Dean’s List status (3.50-4.00 GPA) while three Red Raiders recorded perfect 4.0 GPAs.

NEW OPPONENTS

Texas Tech will play two fi rst-time opponents this season when they host both Tennessee Tech and Florida Gulf Coast. Last season the Red Raiders faced three fi rst-time opponents (Western Michigan, Utah Valley, Iowa) who they went a combined 4-0 against.

RED RAIDER BIRTHDAYS DURING 2012 SEASON

Four Red Raiders will celebrate their birthdays on a gameday this season. Right-handed pitcher Brennan Stewart turns 23 when Tech opens a three-game series in Fort Worth at TCU on March 9. Freshman shortstop Tim Proudfoot will have his 19th birthday on the Red Raiders Big 12 home series opener against Oklahoma on Friday, March 23. Junior right-handed pitcher Jamen Parten will celebrate his 21st birthday in Lawrence, Kan., on March 30, the fi rst day of the Red Raiders’ three-game trip to Kansas. Senior lefty Ben Flora will have his 22nd birthday on April 20 when Tech opens a three-game road series at Oklaho-ma State in Stillwater.
