STORY LINES

GAME NOTESSCOUTING THE YELLOW JACKETS After allowing a Wilmington touchdown early in the first quarter, Baldwin Wallace scored 54 unanswered points and rushed for 287 yards and six touchdowns in the contest. Josiah Holt finished with nine car-ries for 81 yards and two touchdowns, while fellow running back Isaac Reed III totaled 76 yards and two scores.

The Yellow Jackets rank in the top five in the league in scoring offense (30.2 ppg), scoring defense (17.3), total offense (358.7 ypg) and total defense (335.0).

Quarterback Michael Slack ranks second on the team in rushing and has thrown for 607 yards, four touch-downs and five interceptions. Running back Nolan Sordyl paces Baldwin Wallace with 312 rushing yards and four scores. Wide receiver Kevin Johnson leads the team with 17 receptions for 267 yards and two touchdowns.

Linebacker David Flegal leads the BW defense with 63 tackles and a pair of fumble recoveries. Defensive lineman Luke Riemenschneider has 37 tackles and leads the conference with 5.5 sacks for the year.

“They’ve gained a lot of momentum in the last few weeks,” Candeto said of the Yellow Jackets. “They’ve looked like a very strong football team and they’re getting into midseason form. They’ve gained a lot of confidence over the last few weeks, which is scary for us.”

Baldwin Wallace rushes for nearly 230 yards per game and features four different players with 240 yards or more this season. On the other side of the ball, the Yellow Jackets are holding opponents to just 114.5 rushing yards per game.

BATTLES IN BEREA The last two Capital-Baldwin Wallace games played in Berea have been decided by a total of six points. The Yellow Jackets defeated the Crusaders 10-7 in 2010 before Capital exacted revenge with a 14-11 triumph in 2011.

In the 2010 contest, the Crusaders drove 99 yards in just over two and a half minutes to cut their deficit to three points with 2:13 to play in the game, but the Yellow Jackets picked up a first down on the ensuing drive and ran out the clock to hang on for the win. Capital forced Baldwin Wallace to punt eight times in the contest but committed five turnovers, including four fumbles, in the affair.

One year later, the Yellow Jackets led 11-0 entering the fourth quarter before the Crusaders put together a pair of scoring drives to take the lead for good. Quarterback Chase Carris led Capital on a 12-play, 90-yard drive, capped by Carris’ own two-yard keeper for a touchdown. Three drives later, the Crusaders embarked on a 13-play, 95-yard march, as Carris found wide receiver Matt White from 17 yards out with just 15 seconds on the clock to give the team the lead for good. Carris connected with White again for the two-point conversion. Capital recorded more yards on its two scoring drives (185) than the rest of the game combined (128).

KEY TO TODAY’S VICTORY With games against the OAC’s three ranked teams in the rear view mirror, Capital coach Craig Candeto hopes the team can move on and focus on the final four games of the season.

“I hope our guys realize what they just went through,” Candeto said. “I hope they don’t let that discourage them. There are a lot of teams who go through that stretch and don’t come out very well. No matter who the opponent is, we need to execute and do our stuff, and be in the spots we need to be.”

Capital University enters its 88th season as a member of the Ohio Athletic Conference in 2013-14. The OAC is the nation’s third-oldest collegiate athletic conference and from its beginnings in 1902 has never wavered in its focus on the entire development of the student-athlete. The conference’s unparalleled success of all its members on and off the playing field has made the OAC one of the nation’s finest college conferences.

The OAC is predated only by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (1888) and the Big Ten (1895). The OAC is older than the Rose Bowl, the

World Series and even the NCAA itself and has survived two world wars, the Great Depression, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. From a modest beginning of six charter members in 1902, the OAC grew to as many as 24 members in the mid-1920s. Through the years a total of 31 colleges and universities at one time or another have been members of the OAC. Currently, the conference consists of 10 members: Baldwin Wallace University, Capital University, Heidelberg University, John Carroll University, Marietta College, the University of Mount Union, Muskingum University, Ohio Northern University, Otterbein University and Wilmington College.

Case Tech’s football team won the OAC’s first conference title with a 5-0-0 record. Outdoor track was added a year later and a third sport, cross country, became a conference sport in 1914. More sports were steadily added to the OAC’s repertoire throughout the years, culminating in the addition of women’s sports in 1984. The OAC currently sponsors championships in 21 sports, 11 men’s and 10 women’s. All 10 of the OAC institutions were founded in the 19th century and have long and outstanding academic reputations.

While maintaining these high academic standards, Ohio Athletic Conference teams and athletes consistently have enjoyed a great deal of success on a regional and national level. The athletic competition is viewed not as an end in itself, but as an extension of the educational programs, academic values that make the OAC one of the finest conferences in the nation.

Preview

The Capital University football team begins the 2013 season under the direction of a new leader. Craig Candeto, a former standout Division I quarterback, Navy fighter pilot and assistant coach, was named the program’s 11th head coach in December. He inherits a team that posted a 2-8 overall record, including a 2-7 mark in Ohio Athletic Conference play, in 2012, the first time in more than a decade that the Crusaders finished with less than five wins in a year.

Capital returns 32 letter winners to the fold this fall, including several student-athletes with starting experience and both kickers. Senior quarterbacks Ryan Kremchek (Sylvania) and Alex Nydza begin the preseason as the front runners to work under center. Krem-check threw for 461 yards and three touchdowns a year ago, while Nydza ran for 134 yards and passed for 263. The starting quarter-back will likely be joined in the backfield by sophomore running back Bo Hardy (Galloway), who was named honorable mention All-OAC after finishing fourth in the league in rushing yards per game (67.6). Overall, Hardy ran for 608 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns (1 rush/1 receiving). The Crusaders also return their top wide receiver in senior Alex Coleman (Columbus), who finished with 36 recep-tions for 528 yards and three scores. Coleman, who placed fourth in the conference in all-purpose yards (1,252) last year, is also the team’s primary punt and kick returner and is nearing school records in both categories. Capital is also set to return three starters on the offensive line, including seniors David Howson (Hudson) and Anthony Colucci (Ashtabula).

Defensively, the Crusaders return three-fourths of their starting secondary and a pair of starters in their linebacking corps. Senior defensive back Domenic Hebebrand (Hinckley) is a 2011 All-OAC honorable mention recipient and is the team’s top returning tack-ler. Hebebrand registered 67 stops, including 9.5 for a loss, and posted one interception and a forced fumble in 2012. Junior Adam Gammell (Silver Lake) also returns as a starter in the defensive backfield. Junior linebacker Matt Tash (Painesville) emerged late last season as one of the team’s top defensive players. Tash finished the year with 42 tackles, three sacks, an interception, a fumble recov-ery and a fumble forced. Sophomore linebacker Bryant Bokovitz (Gallipolis) also played his way into the starting lineup last season and looks to continue his strong play this fall.

Junior kicker Travis Bosanac (Strongsville) led the OAC with 10 field goals, including a long of 49 yards, in 13 attempts a year ago. He led Capital in scoring with 43 points. Junior punter Joseph Riley (Twinsburg) averaged 37.0 yards per punt and pinned opponents inside the 20-yard line 11 times last season.

The Crusaders kickoff the season on Saturday, Sept. 7, against Thomas More (Ky.) at Bernlohr Stadium. Following a bye week, Capital travels to Marietta for its OAC opener on Sept. 21. The team hosts Ohio Northern on Sept. 28 on Homecoming Saturday at Capital. Af-ter playing four of the next five on the road, a stretch during which the team’s lone home game is against defending national champion Mount Union (Oct. 19), the Crusaders close the season with consecutive home games against Muskingum (Nov. 9) and Wilmington (Nov. 16).
