to ourAutumnShow“As the light begins to soften and autumnwinds wrap around us, so our final showof the year reflects another aspect ofScilly with muted tones, cobalt seas, empty beaches and the soft whisper ofmarram grass whipping in the breeze. Our artists capture the space and simplicity of these islands after the bustleof summer has abated, in the gentle lullbefore winter gales take hold.”

The Artists Richard StanleyI am inspired by the rich tapestryand diversity of Tresco’s landscape;Nature seems undiluted, intensified, and unchanging; it is this energy, thisdynamism, which inspires me. Much of my time is spent capturingthe transient qualities of light and theessence of the landscape. My paintings preserve fleeting moments, which in reality are shortterm in their existence; fresh, dynamic paintings which capture thebeauty of the landscape but alsoevoke an emotional response, paintings which celebrate the landscape and frequently explorethemes of optimism.

John BampfieldLooking for paradise on earth, wetravel to Tresco. Blue skies, whitebeaches, calm turquoise ocean.Yet, the Scilly Isles, and its inhabitants, are not exempt from real life, if anything, owing to the location, they may be even moreaware of those realities.

Aesthetically, Tresco is a feast forthe eyes, and a place for us, visitors,to replenish our souls. But youknow this.

I hope that you might like my latestpaintings, particularly those of youwho enjoy the Scilly Isles, and itspeople, in all its moods, and theirs, dark and light, warm and cold, under clear blue skies and cloudy grey.

Janet LynchLike many people I am always uplifted in the presence of the natural world. Walking one earlyevening through a beautiful Cornishgarden the midsummer rain was stillgently falling through the trees butthe birds, aware that it was clearingup, had started their evening song. I felt as if I were in a sensual dream, moving down narrow paths betweenthe overhanging trees, letting thetrailing wet leaves touch my faceand my hair. I felt enclosed by thegreen beauty of the garden.

Back in the studio, I tried to capturethe immediacy, the complexity, andthe beauty of that evening. Itseemed to me that to immersemyself in that sensation, I should notdraw the individual plants andtrees, but rather the feeling that theyprovoked in me. This series ofpaintings are the result of that walk.

Stuart KettleExpressing Landscape

Six paintings in the Modernist style.

Every year is a challenge to showthe Isles of Scilly in a new light.Moving away from a more traditionallandscape I have used a mixture ofabstract and semi-abstract forms to express my understanding of the nature and everyday rhythms of Scilly.

Texture and colour also play a largepart in my attempt to get under thesurface of these very unique Islands.

I hope my paintings give you a dailyreminder of a very special place.

Wendy McBrideLast November I came back tothese wonderful islands.

I love the light here, I love how itchanges so quickly within and uponan all-enveloping sea and sky.

I suppose I’m essentially a romantictrying to paint not just what my eyesshow me, but how I feel being there,or remembering being there.

Of course it is impossible, but this iswhat I attempt to do.

Geoffrey BickleyBirds have been in abundance this year,The local estuary has been very busy withAll sorts,This time of year they are gettingReady for the big journey – hopethey make it!

But saying that I could do with agood storm –As there is not much driftwoodaround!
