The changing cultural landscape of schools within America

will also impact your classroom.

If trends in census data continue, by 2020 the percentage of

minority students in public elementary and secondary

schools will be greater than whites.

The percentage of elementary and secondary students in

American public schools who speak another language

besides English has rose from 9% in 1979 to 21% in 2008

One who understands and capitalizes on the unique and cultural attributes and experiences of students to promote student achievement.

They are:

1. Socially conscious

2. View students’ diverse backgrounds as assets

3. Understand how learners construct knowledge

4. Know about the lives of the students

5. Designs instruction that builds upon prior knowledge and experiences

Teacher Modeling-model think alouds, allow students to be open minded

Questioning- Use questions that challenge the students to think

Quality responding- respond to their questions and show interest in their thoughts and feelings

Peer interactions and discussion-Encourage discussions amongst students in which they respond positively to each other and also question each other. They should be able to see multiple points of views about something

You can encourage activities that promote different kinds of thinking:

1. Observing closely and describing what’s there

2. Building explanations and interpretations

3. Reasoning with evidence

4. Considering different viewpoints and perspectives

7. Making connections

8. Uncovering complexity and going below the surface of things

WISE: Web-based Inquiry Science Environments

Student post online responses at various stages in their inquiry- It is saved and accessed at a later date by either the student or the teacher.

Metacognition: the ability to think about our own thinking

Reflective thinking helps students make connections among their learning goals.

Teachers should incorporate and manage activities that involve reflection

Digital Divide: the disparity between families and students who have access to digital tools and resources and those who do not

Components of access that should be considered when tackling the digital divide dilemma

Access to up to date hardware, software, and connectivity

Access to meaningful, high quality, and culturally responsive content and the opportunity to that content

Access to educators who know how to use digital tools and resources

Access to systems sustained by leaders with vision and support for change via technology

Bring your own device is 1:1 laptop learning in schools

BYOD can increase equitable access for all students

Students can bring laptops, tablets, smart phones, or IPADS to school.

We have to consider the following:

Beliefs

Values

Attitudes about personal space/privacy

Facial expressions/hand gestures

Concepts of self

Work ethic

General worldview

Acknowledge students differences and commonalities.

Educate students about the diversity of the world around them

Encourage them to think critically

Promote equity and mutual respect among students

Motivate students to become active participants in their learning.

TEC stands for Technology, Education, and Cultural Diversity Center. It was established in 2004.

It develops and implements a collaborative learning environment based on advanced technologies.

Main Objectives:

To develop innovative educational models that bridge among cultures, using and applying advanced technologies;

To train teachers from diverse cultural backgrounds to use the internet and other advanced communication technologies as teaching tools while becoming acquainted through collaborative small group learning;

To develop online teaching units that encourage acceptance of those who are "different "and make them part of the curriculum in teacher education colleges and schools;

To create an inter-cultural online community, comprised of the teaching staff of education colleges and schools;
