PhD International Students:Paper Presentation at Academic Conferences

Prior to the formation of the SHBIE - ITP StudentRepresentatives, new-coming students of MTeach in SHBIEwere left to navigate through the early part of the course bythemselves. Other than the lecturers and staff members inSHBIE, there was no other approachable figure that newstudents could comfortably approach to address any of theiruncertainties about the programme or simply to calm theirnerves during Fresher’s Week. With the formation of ITPStudent Representatives in August 2018, for the first time, newcomers of MTeach were introduced to relatable figureswho have gone through the same course and have personalexperiences to share. During Fresher’s Week, newcomers wereable to approach the Student Representative of their learningarea to ask any questions regarding the course. The StudentRepresentatives have also made initiatives to organise smallersharing sessions for the learning area to get to know the newcohort of students and share personal experiences and tips tosurvive the MTeach programme. Useful tips were shared onhow to prepare and what to expect during teachingplacements, what to include in a portfolio, how to selectteaching materials, and etc.

Other than being a welcoming figure to the new cohort ofstudents, student representatives are essentially responsible inrepresenting the students in the learning area of their owncohort. When issues are raised by the students in the learningarea, student representatives are to listen and relay the issues torelevant staff members in ITP meetings for further actions to betaken. Student representatives are also responsible in relayingimportant information to the students in their learning areas. As aconduit for the collective voices of MTeach students, the ITPStudent Representatives act as a bridge between the students ineach learning areas and the lecturers in SHBIE to collectivelyimprove the learning experience for Initial Teacher Preparation. As the first cohort of the ITP Student Representatives, we wouldlike to thank the lecturers in charge of Initial Teacher Preparationfor forming an official student body to give a platform forstudents to voice their opinions regarding the MTeachprogramme and be more involved in SHBIE. We hope that the ITPStudent Representatives will persist for years to come to helpfuture Teacher Candidates coming to study at SHBIE.

Fathmath Nishan, another SHBIE PhD student alsofrom Maldives has presented her paper during 2ndInternational Conference on Special Education held inSarawak, Malaysia.

My 1.5 years in the MTeach programme wereamong the best and life-changing years of mylife. I really have a strong passion for teachingand MTeach is the perfect programme topursue my interest. It has equipped me withpractical and theoretical knowledge to feelmore confident teaching in real classrooms, aswell as be more critical and reflective on theteaching strategies to accommodate allstudents with different styles of learning.MTeach gave me the opportunity to make ahugely positive impact on children’s lives andeducation. It was a very challenging path, butI have supportive lecturers and friends whomade my MTeach journey a whole lot easier.Siti Sariyah Binti Haji Rahman

(Primary Education)

Mohammad Raihan Bin Haji Abdul Rahim (Secondary Education in Geography/Social Studies)

MTeach programme had offered memany opportunities. It did not onlyteaching me theories but also offeringa platform called 'ProfessionalPractise and Seminar" for me toexperience real classroomenvironment as a teacher. Inaddition, the lecturers in SHBIEalways open their arms for teachercandidates under this programmeanytime.

Honestly before MTeach I thoughtteaching would be the easiestprofession to choose and takecompared to the rest but now I find itjust as diffcult and as rewarding (ifnot more so than others) but you needpatience and adaptability skillsparticularly since unlike officeworkers, the people around you(which in your case is your students)changes everywhere so you are moreexposed to different people withdifferent attitude and behaviour.

Passion; in both teaching and learning. Henceteachers will be driven to continuously learnand discover ways to improve one’s teachingand consequently, students learning. Also, agood Commerce or Business teacher needs tobe able to see from the students’ perspectives(and consequently adapting to them). Often, teachers teach according to their own viewsand ignore the students’ when instead, thelatter’s should be the major departure point oftheir learning.
