Throughout our business, wherever you look, you will see creative brains already making an active mark on the designs and trends of the future, today - developing materials created from sustainable resources. And the energy we generate as a by-product supplies “green” electricity and district heating far beyond our own requirements.

Where we are:Basically all over the world – because ideas and products made by FunderMax are as familiar in the residential buildings of France as in the laboratories of Asia and sleek Italian interiors in the form of furniture. Latest NewsThis past year has seen considerable growth for FunderMax in the UK. Here are just a couple of projects that have showcased our products.

‘We’re really happy with how things are progressing in the UK. The brand profile has certainly been raised, and we’ve invested carefully in marketing; select event shows, email campaigns, targeted PR, not to mention a lean but ambitious sales team, this has all served to get the FunderMax name out there. What’s also really helped is the introduction of even more innovative products, the new colour range has been hugely successful, and we’re continually pushing the boundaries with new fixing systems and finishes. There’s certainly been a rise in the demand for more ‘creative’ solutions in the UK too, making FunderMax products the perfect alliance.’

M.LOOK Fire rated HPL used for the first time in the UK...

PRESS PACK | 15

The first ever UK installation of FunderMax’s unique m.look; A2,d0,S1 fire rated high pressure laminate cladding is currently drawing to a close at the new Port Talbot Rail-way Station. The extensive internal and external refurbishment of this ‘live’ station, featuring an impressive enclosed footbridge, has proved an ambitious yet highly rewarding project.

The architect’s vision“Port Talbot station will be the centrepiece of a transport hub that will connect public transport services and improve journeys for the public. The bridge will house a new ticket office, waiting areas, customer facilities, information points and CCTV equipment, as well as steps and lift access to all platforms.”

Everlast Rail steps up to the challenge... Jason Cross, Managing Director of Everlast Rail talks about the challenges of the refurbishment: ‘As the remit of the initial project began to extend, we prepared ourselves for the challenge that lay ahead. To be honest, it’s the complexities of the job that have made it all the more fulfilling. Working within a live station, we’ve had to think of innovative ways to keep disruption to a minimum. The initial contract was for the development of the roof, however the scope soon expanded to include: the installation of external facades, creation and installation of a new enclosed footbridge, and the installation of internal features - including HPL. This placed great pressure on our supply and design team to source products that would fulfill a multitude of requirements: selecting solutions that were fire retardant, quick to install, cost effective and aesthetically impressive. The end result ticked all of those boxes, and we’re extremely pleased with how the project has progressed.’

The need for unique, easy-to-install products Given all of the objectives above, Everlast Rail turned to a select range of products. Products that not only boasted dependable features, and fire retardant qualities, they could also be prefabricated off site. Crucial for keeping disruption to a minimum. M.look is just one of these products. Carefully pre-cut to size in FunderMax’s Austrian factory, and expertly installed by Everlast Rail, this intelligent HPL is both versatile and cost effective.

Ultimate fire protection. Ultimate style. M.look is the ideal solution.m.look offers a whole new level of expression. Blending exceptional style and superior fire performance, this unique facade offers superb protection - with a fire classification of A2-s1, d0 according to EN 13501-1, giving greater peace of mind and design free-dom. Where safety and innovation are key this clever HPL steps up to the mark. What’s more, it can be used in builds in excess of 30 metres and boasts an extensive colour palette, from contemporary urban shades and bold plain colours, to muted hues, metallics, vintage finishes and natural wood decors...

Paul Hughes, Director of Sales UK for FunderMax, comments on m.look and its successful installation. ‘As the first ever m.look project in the UK, we’re really excited about Port Talbot Station. However it’s a project that’s not been without its tests. Because the station was ‘live‘ at the time of installation, we had to make sure the panels were precisely cut so that they could be easily and speedily fitted into the recessed framing. m.look is perfect for the rail sector, and in any situation where safety is a priority, with its A2 fire rating, and it’s also an aesthetically pleasing alternative to vitreous enamel cladding. m.look is the epitome of what architecture is all about, the perfect balance between art and science. We’re thrilled with the end result.’

Externally - FunderMax F-panel rainscreen cladding was another key choiceFunderMax Exterior is a high-quality high pressure laminate (as per EN 438-6, type EDF), specifically designed for facades and balconies. Offering extreme durability and resistance, it features double hardened acrylic polyurethane resin finish for ultimate weather protection.

Paul Hughes, Director of Sales UK, comments on the qualities of Max Exterior, and why it complements the station refurb perfectly: ‘With its futuristic design, it seems fitting that Max Exterior was chosen for the facade of Port Talbot Station. This contemporary HPL, I feel, was the ideal choice as it has great qualities. It can stand up to the toughest environmental challenges: harsh climate, graffiti, impact damage... plus it’s really economical and can be prefabricated for easy installation..’

As the overall project accelerates to the finish line, Jason Cross, Managing Director of Everlast Rail, commends everyone involved.‘It’s been a fantastic project and I’d just like to thank the whole team for their hard work.’

Contemporary interior design which looks and feels ultra modern needs to combine different materials and surfaces, such as wood, glass, stone, metal, (exposed) concrete and plastics, in order to achieve a stunning effect. FunderMax, leading producer of quality wood materials and decorative laminates, has achieved exactly this with its recent addition.

Inspired by stone, Grafica boasts an almost porous finish and reflects light beautifully - working in perfect harmony with both natural and pastel shades.

Grafica - an idea becomes a reality

'The idea behind Grafica was clear from the outset - to create a product which was recognisably different from other products on the market. Grafica cannot be compared to anything else. It gives designers the ability to mix materials impressively.’Alessandro Zanotto, Director Furniture Industries, FunderMax GmbH

Alessandro continues:‘Grafica really is a unique material. Its high resistance, and excellent scratch resistance were important factors in its development. The timeless quality of FunderMax facades remains, but new essential features and textures have brought a whole new dimension to our surface portfolio.’

Mayflower HallsSouthampton University showcases Max Exterior Universities, colleges, schools... FunderMax is perfect for the education sector.

Page 20: Fundermax press pack 2016(lo-res) copy

PRESS PACK | 20

When it comes to sourcing materials for education sector builds, it’s difficult to find products that offer the freedom of creative expression as well as dependable durability. Yet with its extreme weather resistance and sleek contemporary appeal, Max Exterior ticked all the right boxes for the development of Southampton University’s Mayflower Halls.

Capturing the architect’s vision beautifully, Max Exterior rainscreen panelling was affixed in varying, complementing shades of grey, across the facade of Mayflower Halls. Contrasting red window frames and cut out brick detail punctuated the design adding to its truly impressive overall effect.

Specialist facade contractors LSC Facades looked to FunderMax’s high pressure laminate to help achieve the architect’s design. Choosing exacting solutions is something that’s formed part of their ethos since their business began. ‘Established since 1988, LSC Facades has grown into a company that can offer the complete external facade solution to suit creative architectural demands through to individual client and contractor needs.’

Paul Hughes, from FunderMax, gives further insight as to why Max Exterior was specified. ‘In today’s tough economic climate the education sector is being placed under immense pressure to source cost effective building solutions that can stand up to tough challenges, be it our harsh climate, or damage, such as graffiti. But it’s under these kind of pressures that Max Exterior comes into its own. Highly cost effective, and extremely durable, these high pressure laminate panels offer the same aesthetic appeal (if not even moreso) of the many cementitious boards which are on the market - however, they have a distinctive and unique advantage - they have a higher level of impact resistance and can be easily cleaned. Something a cementatious board, by its very nature, is unable to offer. Exceptional performance, excellent quality and great aesthetics are the cornerstones of Max Exterior.’

Martin Leekblade pre-construction director at LSC Facades believes that ‘the market is gearing towards cladding and growth of the industry is continuous, as the choice of architects to design new builds with such facades really reflects the lack of bricklayers in the industry since the end of the recession.’

Built on the site of an old wallpaper factory, the FunderMax Exterior jasmine cladding was selected for its ability to capture the history of this unique location in a contemporary and visually striking way.

Chris Simpson from installer Cladding Design Solutions, comments, “We work with clients to find inspired solutions to their design specifications, and FunderMax Exterior helped us to bring the vision for Vita to life. Versatility was crucial on this project and unquestioningly formed the basis of our decision to use FunderMax Exterior.

“Not only have the bold design and strict planning requirements of the project been met, the result has beautifully surpassed all visual expectations. With a stunning jasmine finish and boasting a routed contemporary floral pattern.”

FunderMax Exterior is growing increasingly popular among specifiers, contractors and architects seeking flexible and cost-effective façade and cladding materials.

Face fixed with colour matched rivets, the mixed private and housing association residential project has been sympathetically designed to emulate the heritage of the site. Set in a dynamic and vibrant suburb of East London, ita is a striking development of one, two and three-bedroom apartments.

The streamlined finish offered by FunderMax Exterior allows windows to be bordered perfectly, with no blunt finish to either side.

Paul Hughes, from FunderMax Exterior, adds, “Vita was a challenging yet exciting project to be involved with, and we’re thrilled with the end result. The versatility of FunderMax Exterior has resulted in an enviable marriage of modern architectural design with a strong and unique heritage.”

Concluding, Chris Simpson from Fundermax Exterior installer, Cladding Design Solutions, says, “We had various criteria to adhere to in order to meet the planner’s design specification completely. When seeking a suitable rainscreen solution, the product needed to be high quality and BBA approved, durable and competitively priced, which is a difficult combination to find.

“However, Fundermax Exterior not only ticked all of these boxes, it also presented us with a charming visual design which characterised perfectly the essence of the project.”

Opinion PieceThe demand for individual expression is on the rise Paul Hughes, from FunderMax, comments on the rising trend and demand for individual design within the cladding industry, and subsequent challenges.

There are numerous challenges that confront facade producers in today’s competitive construction market. All of which have to be balanced carefully. When it comes to choosing preferred rainscreen products, design, price point, longevity and sustainability are all of equal importance as part of the selection process. However, there is now another prerequisite which cannot be overlooked. The demand for individual expression and creativity has never been greater.

As brands look to new ways to stand out, at FunderMax we’ve seen a significant increase in orders of completely unique ‘one off’ high pressure laminate panels. From bold geometric designs to large format re-created photographs and intricate motifs, there has definitely been a surge in the desire for individual panels. Subsequently this has placed pressure on the sector to produce a range that allows such expression.

Creative architectural design made possible

Over the past few years companies have seemed to move away from colour blocking, and safe grey and beige palettes, to more emotive photographic effects and naturally inspired facades. There is a real growth in creative architectural design, with imaginative use of large format panel cladding. Today, versatility, creativity and cost effectiveness are on the essential tick list when it comes to rainscreen cladding.

Sustainability & creativity. Intrinsically linked.

The importance of sustainable design has been up for debate in recent years, with RIBA president Angela Brady leading on the subject. One of the key things that has come out of these discussions is the need for creators to not just develop sustainable solutions, but ones which are ‘irresistible’ from a design perspective too. A number of the world’s leading architects were involved in the debate at Ecobuild and the concluding thought was that there is a distinct lack of innovation within the industry.

We’re moving in the right direction - we’re certainly bucking the trend, but as a sector we need to do more to meet the demand and exceed expectations. It was by no means a surprise that sustainability, low carbon building materials and creativity therewith were also on the agenda at this years Ecobuild, as the industry looks to its fellow creators for inspiration.

When it comes to sustainability, high pressure laminate continues to excel. As well as making great environmental sense, it also enhances energy efficiency when used as an overclad on existing buildings. Created mainly from recycled waste materials - layered kraft paper which is then compacted - it is exceptionally green.

Meeting the demand of a future trend

As people become more aware of the sustainable qualities of rainscreen, and its energy efficiency, the demand continues to grow, as cladding is seen as a versatile, sustainable and cost effective solution.

Though cost effectiveness is definitely a positive attribute, it can sometimes be viewed negatively as designers and creators question its quality. This is one of the prime reasons I am whole heartedly behind the trend for individual expression. There are seemingly limitless possibilities with today’s contemporary high pressure laminate - whatever designers have envisaged can be brought to life, and this goes someway to counteracting that negativity.

The human factor plays a huge role in architecture, so the ability to individualise makes rainscreen a more favourable and expressive choice. And as the demand for ‘the unique’ rises it’s essential that the industry rises to meet that demand, at the same time paying particular attention to sustainability. As Angela Brady asserts ‘sustainability’ and ‘irresistibility’ should go hand in hand.

Modulo & ScaleoEffortless installation. Innovative design.

Page 28: Fundermax press pack 2016(lo-res) copy

As more and more pressure is being placed on homebuilders to create affordable, flexible and sustainable housing for an ever increasing population, it would seem that rainscreen cladding is becoming ‘the’ choice for UK developers. Especially with the introduction of innovative new fixing systems that make installation effortless and speedy.

In the CBI’s (Confederation of British Industry) recent manifesto, Katja Hall (Deputy Director General) highlighted the need for more cost effective solutions.

‘Britain needs a sustainable, flexible housing market that delivers quality, affordable homes in the places people want to live. We need to double the number of homes we build and this will require bold solutions.’ Particularly with the population set to reach 70 million by 2027. Katja asserts that the overall goal should be ‘to double the number of new homes we build a year, building 240,000 new homes a year within a decade.’ No easy feat when you consider traditional construction materials and methods.

Rainscreen cladding helps meet the demand

Paul Hughes, Director of Sales UK for FunderMax, has noticed a considerable increase in the demand for rainscreen over the past year. Not only is it perfect for the UK market with its intrinsic durable features and anti-graffiti properties, it is extremely cost efficient. And

change the face of the housebuilding market.

‘Our prefabricated Scaleo lap siding panels are ideal for creating robust and modern facades, as they come ready to go, making life so much easier on site, especially as the weather turns colder. When combined with our simple Modulo fixing system the overall installation is accelerated - with a straightforward mounting process. Modulo is quite unique as it can be used to create impressive interior wall cladding too, and the substructure can be either standard wood or aluminium.

It’s a really exciting time for both FunderMax and the cladding industry as a whole, as there seems to be a concerted effort to innovate whilst keeping that cost effective edge. I certainly think future trends for the housing sector will continue to be led by prefabricated solutions, and I’m sure that FunderMax will continue to pioneer new products such as these.’

Education architectureFunderMax takes education architecture to new heights...

Page 30: Fundermax press pack 2016(lo-res) copy

When it comes to education architecture, far too often, it would seem, a compromise has to be made between creativity, cost effectiveness, and dependability. For a sector that is increasingly under pressure to minimise spend, it tends to be cost that becomes priority, with creativity, all too frequently falling into the ‘nice to have’ box. At FunderMax we’re continuing to challenge convention and perception, with the introduction of a revolutionary new facade which has put paid to that compromise.

m.look offers a whole new level of expression. Blending exceptional style and superior fire performance, this unique facade offers ultimate protection - with a fire classification of A2-s1, d0 according to EN 13501-1, giving greater peace of mind and design freedom. What’s more, it can be used in builds which exceed 30 metres and boasts an extensive colour palette, from bold plain shades and modern muted hues and metallics, to vintage and natural wood decors.

It’s fair to say that face of education architecture is changing, Paul Hughes, Director of Sales UK for FunderMax, comments on both the challenges and emerging trends. ‘In today’s competitive construction market, there are so many challenges facing producers of facades for the education sector, most of which require the balance of competing priorities. Durability, design edge, attractive price points and sustainability are all prerequisites. Yet recently we have seen a surge in demand for more innovative, creative solutions. It’s pleasing to note that the cladding industry as a whole is rising to meet this requirement.

It’s so refreshing to see within the education sector specifically, an area which not too long ago was predominantly associated with visions of drab, grey facades. Today that’s no longer the case. The vivid, the versatile and the very cost effective... are now the bywords for rainscreen cladding. Pair that with the intrinsic durability, anti-graffiti and weather resistance properties and its clear to see why there’s an upsurge in the demand for rainscreen. And with ever more stringent health and safety legislations emerging we’re confident that our new m.look will more than meet the grade.

m.look is the epitome of what architecture is all about, the perfect balance between art and science, and we’re really pleased with the end product. Where safety is paramount and innovation is key, it truly does excel.’
