FUNCTIONAL TEXTILES UNIT
TORINO FASHION WEEK 2018
ORIGIN OF THE FUNCTIONAL TEXTILES UNITUNITES WITH THE STORY OF CETEMMSA AND EURECAT
CETEMMSA was founded as a joint initiative of local business associations and public administrations to promote new technology for textile sector.
1992
Catalonia has always been the area rich of
textile industry.
At 1992, technological center CETEMMSA was established.
At 2017, Eurecat has 600 employees and 18 technology units.
At 2015, five Catalan technology centers joined together and
formed Eurecat.
First European e-Textileprojects were launched at CETEMMSA. They focused on monitoring user´s vital signs and motions.
2009
CRTTT, Research Center of Textile Technology, started formal collaboration with CETEMMSA to develop functional textiles.
2007Eurecat was founded. First time, there is a unit focusing fully into textile technology: Functional Textiles Unit.

CAPABILITIESLARGE SCALE OF CAPABILITIES
• Developing knitted & woven structures according to the Customer’s need
• Developing hybrid yarns by combining several yarns together to get more functionalities
• Testing the development result – yarn, fabric or other textile structure
• Functionalizing textile surfaces via embroidering, printing, etc.
Functional Textiles unit has excellent know-how of textile structures and materials. Besides, unit has a good assortment of industrial textile machines in use – for both
knitting and weaving, which is a great tool for innovation and prototyping.
In the private projects, all these are harnessed to solve customer’s need.

TEMISEUROPEAN SUDOE PROJECT (2012-2014)
Project developed new tools to manage better with the health care challenges.
One of the tools is a monitoring shirt to measure and assess changes in our
health.
The shirt monitors the following biosignals:
• Heart rate / ECG
• Breathing rate
• Temperature
• Fever
The shirts were tested in the hospitals in France and Portugal by healthy subjects
and Parkison’s disease patients.
TORINO FASHION WEEK 2018
TEMISEUROPEAN SUDOE PROJECT (2012-2014)
The requirements of the shirt
included long term usability,
wash ability, comfortable to use,
and portable & wireless use.
Temporary body temperature monitoring
(on demand)
Soft textile sensors for heart rate & ECG (two in the front,
one on the back)
Continuous skin temperature monitoring
Elastic cable integrated for inductive breathing monitoring

WEARLUMBPREVENTION OF LUMBAR FATIGUE (Nuclis: 2014-2016)
This project focused in developing a wearable & portable system to prevent lumbar fatigue / musculo-skeletal disorders.
Wearlumb system analyses the posture of the userby utilizing the data collected by the garmentintegrated sensors.
Data is collected via:
• Bending sensors
• Stretch sensors
• Accelerometers
Monitoring underwear together with WearLumbsystem has been tested in real occupationalenvironment. Continuation is currently planned.

SOLAR TEXTILE PRODUCTINTEGRATION OF ELECTRONICS AND TEXTILES
This project was about integrating flexible solar cells into a textile product.
YouShine was developed by thedesign brand Cooked in Barcelonain co-operation with partners. One ofthe partners was Eurecat (beforeCETEMMSA).
• This solar bag is a product forurban, but environmental friendlyliving.
• Integrated solar panels help tokeep the batteries of the mobiledevices charged during the day.
• Colorful materials origin of the recycled advertisement banderoles.
This product is a great example of combining technology and
modern design.

GENERAL E-TEXTILES TRENDS
Study of Juniper Research estimates themarket of smart wearables to be around$87 billion dollars at 2021, when therevenues of hardware like smartwatches andfitness wearables are calculated.
Besides, Juniper Research estimates thehealthcare wearables together with smartglass products to have the biggest year-on-year growth, when thinking smart wearablesand the period from 2016 to 2021. Theannual revenue from the healthcarewearables (hardware) is predicted toreach $11.2 billion.
International Data Company, IDC, givesnumbers also for the clothing wearablesspecifically and sees the shipment amount ofclothing wearables to grow from 3.3 millionproducts at 2017 to 21.6 million at 2021.
There are e.g. many monitoring wearables already available on themarket, some of them are clothing wearables and some are accessories.
The market of wearables is pretty young and it is seen interesting withlot of future potential, but there are also some challenges.
