FUN TIMES SOUTH FLORIDA UNIT #30 Wally Byam Caravan Club International Sept/Oct/Nov 2015 International Rallies are special for several reasons! They offer an opportunity to really become familiar with an area of the US. They bring together old friends that you have met and traveled with at rallies and caravans. They offer a chance to start new friendships with people you work and play with. You benefit most from attending an International Rally by volunteering for a job & becoming an early worker. This gives you more time to explore an area and more time to visit with friends. In Farmington, NM, we were able to explore the city, visit sights of ancient Indian communities, see the 4-Corners Area along with the National Parks and Monuments nearby. The rally itself offers 10 days of special seminars, entertainment, games, meetings and activities. At the Farmington Rally there were special speakers: Peter MacDonald, a Navajo Code Talker, told us the story of 30 young Navajo Marines in 1942, who created a special code that saved thousands of American lives because it was unbreakable. Tom Wheeler, a 4th Generation owner of Hogback Trading Post, explained the area history and David Nighteagle, a Lakota Indian flute maker, demonstrated his musical skills. Sept/Oct/Nov 2015

International Rallies are special for several reasons!

They offer an opportunity to really become familiar with an area of the US. They bring together

old friends that you have met and traveled with at rallies and caravans. They offer a chance to

start new friendships with people you work and play with.

You benefit most from attending an International Rally by volunteering for a job & becoming an

early worker. This gives you more time to explore an area and more time to visit with friends.

In Farmington, NM, we were able to explore the city, visit sights of ancient Indian communities,

see the 4-Corners Area along with the National Parks and Monuments nearby.

The rally itself offers 10 days of special seminars, entertainment, games, meetings and activities.

At the Farmington Rally there were special speakers: Peter MacDonald, a Navajo Code Talker,

told us the story of 30 young Navajo Marines in 1942, who created a special code that saved

thousands of American lives because it was unbreakable. Tom Wheeler, a 4th Generation owner

of Hogback Trading Post, explained the area history and David Nighteagle, a Lakota Indian flute

    maker, demonstrated his musical skills.

Consider being an early worker and attending the next International Rally at Lewisburg, Virginia.

    Gift Exchange with a Twist!

We are holding a gift exchange at our Jonathan Dickenson rally. Each partici-

pating member will bring a $10 to $20 gift but it must be for a child aged 3 or

    4. It will be donated to John Frerking’s pre-school children. Men buy for boys

and women buy for girls and be sure to wrap the gift. Then we will hold a gift

exchange with our members who will open the packages. Then

the gifts will be passed on to needy children at PEPPI’S Head Start in Belle

Glade, FL. Gift suggestions are for building blocks in a container, larger

dolls, and tea sets, but no small pieces. Target or Walmart are great places

Excel Charter School, Belle Glade, Florida

Belle Glade is located in western Palm Beach County’s agricultural belt. With a median income of $22,000, 33% of the population lives below the poverty level. A Head Start School (PEPPI) was established 30 years ago to address the needs of the youngest children and help break the cycle of poverty. Over 200 children attend the present Head Start school which was completely rebuilt when John Frerking was Chairman of the Board of Lutheran Services – Florida headquartered in Tampa. In a follow up, longitudinal study of the graduating classes it was discovered that many were experiencing “Head Start Fade”. In other words by third grade the children were losing the advantages the Head Start school provided. To combat this loss, Lutheran Services – Florida made the decision to support and bol-ster the early childhood gains by offering a new and challenging primary school (grades K-3) at an addi-tional site. The school program incorporates parental involvement and training with innovative technology that provides a path to the highest levels of achievement and academic excellence. Students from low in-come and minority households are held to the highest standards of conduct in order to maintain a safe learning environment. This charter school complies with or exceeds all standards of Palm Beach County Schools. All students are provided with uniforms to help support proper decorum and an IPad to use dur-ing the school day to provide technological support for academics. Special education and remedial needs are met through special area teachers. A playground was completed last summer to provide a safe envi-ronment for outdoor play.

The school has expanded to include grades K-5 with 130 in attendance. An after school program is envisioned with tutoring for students who are still struggling with academic goals as well as after school care.
