Greetings from the Director

C an you believe it? Summer has ended and school is back in session! It seems like just yesterday when I arrived to lead this great team of individuals who

make up Wentzville’s Parks and Recreation Department. Since March, I have enjoyed getting to meet many of our Wentzville residents. I know there are still many of you I have yet to meet, and I look forward to meeting you soon! The staff and I have been busy keeping track of a number of large projects related to the ½-cent sales tax, which was approved by Wentzville residents back in 2010. As you browse through the latest edition of Fun Times, I invite you to join us in celebrating the many accomplishments achieved this past summer:

• The City’s new Splash Station Aquatic Center opened according to schedule on May 23

• Renovations to the Community Club Lake in Rotary Park were completed

• Our partners at the Mid-America Festivals Corporation, who operate the Greater St. Louis Renaissance Faire, had one of the largest attendances in recent history for this festival. The Festival hosted approximately 40,000 visitors during this four-weekend event, despite all the rain we had this past spring.

• The Sports staff of the Recreation Division hosted 58 youth baseball and softball teams, for ages 5-16, in a cooperative program with Dardenne Prairie, Lake St. Louis, New Melle and Wright City.

In addition, we provided a wholesome, safe environment for more than 1,650 youth who enjoyed our summer camp at the Progress Park Recreation Center and provided approximately 7,500 citizens with a great hometown parade and a spectacular fireworks display on July 4th!

Wentzville’s Parks and Recreation Department is committed to meeting the leisure needs of our citizens. One way we garner feedback is to reach out to the public through social media and you have responded. Since the first of the year, our Facebook friends and Twitter followers have been growing rapidly. A lot of this growth is directly attributable to a new staff member Kory O’Laughlin, who joined the Wentzville Parks and Recreation team in March. Kory has a real knack for reaching out to the residents, keeping relevant information flowing from our offices to you ― our customers ― and embracing your feedback. Your support of our programs is very much appreciated.

I want to take this opportunity to thank Rebecca Kraus and Kari Johnson for their dedicated service to the Parks and Recreation Board over the past several years. We wish them the best in their future endeavors. They’ll truly be missed!

Finally, welcome to our newest Parks and Recreation Board member, Peggy Meyer—we’re so happy to have you aboard!

New for 2015

Coming SoonEarly Registration for Residents!

We are making some changes to benefit Wentzville residents! Currently, the registration period for recreation programs is the same for both residents and nonresidents of Wentzville. Beginning with our Winter/Spring edition of the Fun Times brochure, we are implementing a Resident’s First registration period for all Wentzville residents. This means that residents are able to register for our recreation programs for a period of time before we open up registration to nonresidents. This will allow residents to have first choice on all programs like swim lessons, summer camp, baseball programs, etc. The Winter/Spring edition of Fun Times will hit homes right around the first of January, so look for more details as the new year approaches.

Making a D

ifferenceVolunteers NeededSpecial activities are always fun to plan, but sometimes it takes more people than we have on staff to assure a successful event. If you are new to the area, volunteering is a great way to get involved in your community and meet lots of new people! Last year, our volunteers donated more than 10,000 hours of their time to assist with special projects, help with programs and/or serve as docents for our facilities. Volunteers are asked to commit a minimum of 10 hours of service per year and each volunteer will receive a volunteer staff shirt. Volunteers work a wide range of events including the Easter Egg Hunt, Halloween Happenings, July 4th Celebration, Summer Concert Series, Movie in the Park, Holiday Night Lights, Senior Dinner and Dances and other programs! If you see an activity you would like to be a part of, please call us ― we can always find a place for you to volunteer. For additional information, contact Sandie in the Parks and Recreation Department at (636) 332-9236 or send an email to [email protected]. Look for this symbol to get involved!

Bring Conservation HomeCoordinated by the St. Louis Audubon Society, Bring Conservation Home is an urban land habitat restoration assistance and certification program. The program addresses native and non-native invasive plants, water conservation and stewardship practices for the benefit of birds, butterflies, other animals and people. For a small fee, trained habitat advisors visit your landscape, perform an assessment and consultation, and provide a written report with a menu of recommendations on how to restore nature habitat value to your landscape. Landscaping with native plants to restore habitat is essential for our native birds, butterflies and each other.

Additional benefits include:• Lower water bill—natives need little/no watering• Lower electric bill—shade from native trees• Better water quality for all by less storm runoff• Save more time and money by mowing less grass• Reduction in greenhouse gas emissions• Less pesticide and herbicide use due to the biologically diverse landscape• Higher property value from an attractive landscape• Fun and inspirational encounters with nature

A modest program fee of $25 (for Audubon and partner members) will be payable at the time of the initial site visit. The City of Wentzville is a partner. The fee includes one initial site assessment and consultation visit, plus one optional follow-up certification visit. To invite us to help you create exciting and attractive habitat for birds and butterflies, complete the online application online at www.stlouisaudubon.org.
