Fully Devoted

Our theme for this school year has been “Fully Devoted,” and it’s been a

good healthy challenge to consider exactly what it means to be fully de-

voted to God. I have enjoyed writing weekly devotionals for the middle

school and high school students around that theme, as well as listening to

chapel speakers and even delivering a couple chapel speeches on what it

means to put God first. More importantly, it’s been heart-warming for me

to observe folks around me – board members, teachers, staff members and

even students whose lives seem to embody that theme of being fully de-

voted.

I believe our Annual Society Meeting will give you evidence, whether it be

reports from various committees, expressing thanks to retiring board mem-

bers or acknowledging the years of service from departing staff members,

of people who are fully devoted to God and to serving him in the arena of

Christian education.

Various church committees includ-ing Evangelism, Children’s Ministry, di-rected a Coffee Break program and a Cof-fee Break Convention. Served on Calvin College’s national and local alumni boards. Comments: As a former Christian school teacher for many years, I am devoted to quality Christian education. I am espe-cially invested in Central Valley Christian because my grandchildren attend this school and I am currently helping the teachers document their curriculum in or-der to validate their compliance with na-tional and local standards along with seek-ing to Biblically integrate their subject mat-ter. I have volunteered in many roles at church including Sunday school teacher, vacation bible school teacher, overseer of the AEF (defibrillator), and children and worship teacher. I have served on the Minister of Music search team and the Children’s Ministry search team. I have volunteered as the CVC Volunteer School Nurse. I am planning on helping at the 7th grade science camp this year. Comments: If selected as a member of the CVC School Board, I am looking for-ward to experiencing CVC and to learning more of how CVC operates, and to have a greater appreciation of each member of the CVC staff, parents, families and vol-unteers that make up the CVC commu-nity. with Schuil & Associates, Inc. Past Experiences: I have served twice as a Deacon and once as an Elder at our church, and I have served once on the CVC School Board. I have also served on Visalia Community Tennis Associa-tion and various committee’s at our Church and at CVC. Comments: I feel blessed to be part of the Christian Community that has been established over the last 38 years at CVC. Christian education for me is the most integral part of my child’s upbring-ing and I want all of our CVC students to know that our Lord loves them and that we have salvation through Jesus Christ. It has been a pleasure to see the devel-opment of each of my children as ell as their classmates. I appreciate the con-sistent God first attitude of all the teach-ers, staff and administrators at CVC. I am honored again to be nominated for a CVC Board position.

Past Experiences: I taught at CVC from 1998 to 2007 and during that time I served on CVC’s high school education committee and CVC’s finance committee. I have served two 3-year terms as a deacon at Visalia CRC including 2 years on the Gov-erning Council. I am currently serving on the Warehouse/Church House board and I am also serving on the Board of Trustees at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, Illinois. Comments: I am a strong proponent of Christian education as I have taught at CVC for 9 years, was educated for K-12 in a CSI Christian school and also attended a Christian college. I believe the union of church, home, and school is vital to edu-cated and prepare our kids to live, work, and serve in the world that is telling them they can compromise their values. I would be honored to be a part of the Board here at CVC where I would strive to continue to make CVC a place where kids are taught to love God with all their hearts, and to be in-quisitive about the world around them.

Valley Veterinarians in Tulare. Past experiences: Two terms as deacon at VCRC. Various committees at church and currently on Buildings and Grounds at CVC. Have served on two pharmaceutical com-pany advisory boards as a veterinary advi-sor. Comments: My wife and I are very com-mitted to Christian education and believe the home-church-school triangle is critical in helping develop a deep love for Christ and service to others in our children. My wife and I both attended Christian school from kindergarten through college. We sin-cerely appreciate the CVC staff and com-munity and I see serving on the board as a way to give back to CVC.

Past Experiences: Elementary Education Committee at CVC. Congregational Life Com-mittee at Visalia CRC. Children’s Ministry Team at Visalia CRC. Comments: I am willing to serve as a CVC school board member because of my deep love for Christian Education. I attended On-tario Christian School from K-12. Then I went to Dordt College. This is where I got a degree in Elementary Education. I taught four years at Christian schools and currently enjoy sub-stitute teaching at CVC. I have 5 daughters that attend CVC. Danae is a freshman, Chloe is in 7th, Kamryn-5th, Tessa-3rd and Aubrey is in 2nd. Because I have 5 daughters currently enrolled here I care deeply about what goes on at all levels. It is my desire to continue to see CVC thrive. I want it to continue to be a school that is deeply rooted in Christ and stands out be-cause we are Christian. I want it to continue to be a school that values academic excel-lence because that allows us to bring glory to God. It is also my desire that as students graduate they are firmly grounded in their faith and able to see god’s hand in all areas of life. I love this school and am thankful for the teachers and staff here. I would be honored to serve on the board of CVC.

Central Valley Christian Annual Society Meeting Minutes

Tuesday, April 25, 2017 – 7:00 PM

Central Valley Christian High School Chapel

I. Board President Art Van Beek called the meeting to order and welcomed the Society members.

II. Rev. Steve Duyst, Pastor at Tulare Community Church, led devotions based on II Thessalonians

1 - challenging us to be worthy or our calling, relying on His power so that Jesus Christ may be

glorified.

III. The minutes of the April 26, 2016 Society Meeting were provided in the newsletter and had been

previously approved by the School Board.

IV. Art Van Beek recognized the monetary gifts and service provided to the school.

a. Endowment - $88,962 given directly to the school, $1950 in scholarships

b. Used Treasures - $52,500 to the CVC Endowment Fund

c. Mother’s Club - $44, 000 for various items and projects across the four campuses

d. SCRIP - $85,000 back to the school and $55,000 back as tuition credit.

V. Larry Baker introduced current Board Members and acknowledged and thanked retiring board

members (Linda Moons, Matt Verdegaal, Ellie De Hoop, Roger Fluegel, Nick Leyendekker),

pointing out which committees they served on and the unique traits of each that were appreci-

ated.

VI. Art Van Beek introduced the Board nominees: Robyn Boertje, Gary Bosma, Eric Greidanus,

Mark Pate (TCC); Philip Heynen, Frank Leyendekker, Jr. (TURC); Murray Minnema, Kelly

Verdegaal (HCRC); Aaron Van Dyk, Clint Walhof (VCRC).

VII. Approved by motion to accept 69 absentee ballots. 100 Society members were present.

VIII. Several members of the Board collected the ballots and then left to count them.

IX. Larry Baker recognized and thanked four staff members who will not be returning to CVC

next year: Len Fakkema, Kurt Saltzman, Glenda Vander Maarl, Suzette Leigh. A monetary

gift was given for their years of service.

X. Committee and School Highlights

a. Kadie Calac, CVC Ag teacher, and four FFA members spoke of the chapter’s accomplish-

ments, importance, and opportunities provided this past year

b. Marissa Carpenter and Nicole Mulder gave a presentation of their duties as Marketing

Director and Enrollment Coordinator, explaining the importance of word of mouth to en-

courage families to see what CVC has to offer and the continuous communication from in-

quiries to enrollment and retention.

XI. David Bekedam, Board Treasurer, explained the proposed budget and the increases that are

needed for the next year. He thanked the Society for their generosity and support for Christian

Education at CVC. An opportunity for discussion and questions was given. The 2017/2018

budget was approved verbally by motion.

XII. Art Van Beek announced the results of the election:

XIII. Art Van Beek acknowledged and appreciated the staff for their “yes-we-can-do-it” attitude

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Executive Committee

Art Van Beek - President, Dave Zuiderveld - VP, David Bekedam - Treasurer, Jodi Schotanus - Secre-tary, and Superintendent Larry Baker as a non-voting member. The Executive Committee meets the second Monday of each month and is responsible for approving family admissions, appointing board and society members to standing committees, evaluation of the superintendent, making recommendations for approval by the full board and acting on behalf of the board in time sensitive matters. The committee pays close attention to the CVC Policy Manual and makes every effort to keep CVC within those guidelines. This year we were able to meet with each principal to offer support and discuss with them what was happen-ing on each campus. With an increase in the number of students, annexed land to the north of us, and the need for future improvements that could be made to CVC facilities, a Master Plan Task Force was asked to be formed. Even though it is difficult to see staff leave our CVC family and move to different areas to teach, we appreciate their years of service and know God has guided them to new adventures. We are also excited to announce new hires that will be working at CVC next year. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve and are thankful for the society’s support.

We are thankful to be able to support such an excellent group of students, parents, and staff. This year we were blessed with an exceptionally successful fundraiser and were able to purchase some much needed upgrades for our classrooms including custom-built letter box shelves. We are thankful to report that the Preschool is almost full for next year! We have also been blessed with a very stable Preschool staff, and we feel blessed by their dedication to the families who entrust their children to CVC. We are looking forward to God’s plan for the future of our Preschool. We are thankful for the opportunity to work and serve at Central Valley Christian School.

Elementary School Education Committee

Joel Bleeker - Chair, Robyn Boertje, Steve Hamlin, Marnie Todd, Mark Branderhorst, Stacy Soerens, Donna Westra We are thankful for a great year on the elementary campus. We were blessed to have Steve Hamlin lead our campus as an interim principal for this school year. He has helped us review and fine tune many of the pro-grams that we have in place. One of the big changes that Steve helped implement was the chapel improve-ment plan. Several teachers volunteered to be in charge of coordination the chapels. Also, a Kids Praise Team was developed to lead chapel. In order to provide support and encouragement to our elementary teachers, we meet with one grade level each month during our committee meetings. At these meetings we discuss the great things that are happen-ing in the various classrooms, as well as any challenges or concerns that they may have. This year we are reviewing the science curriculum. We also researched ideas of how to incorporate some Spanish into our curriculum. Five of our teachers will be pursuing employment opportunities outside of this area in the coming year. How-ever, we are confident that their replacements will follow the high standards that these teachers have set. As we seek to fill the principal position for this coming year, please continue to pray that God would lead the cor-rect person to CVC. Once again, we are confident in our staff and their commitment to God and the mission of CVC.

Middle School Education Committee

Dave Zuiderveld - Chair, Jodi Schotanus, Lisa Keeley, Rachelle Altena, Jim Elsenbroek, Pat Rainbow, Blake Hiemstra The Middle School Education Committee meets the second Monday of each month and is comprised of board members, middle school administration, faculty, and society members. With a very large 7th grade class joining our campus this school year, the middle school is operating above its normal capacity. The faculty and staff at the middle school have been working hard and doing an excellent job of rising to the challenges created by these additional students. To help accommodate the increase in students, we hired a part-time science teacher, Christy Boyd. This new addition has helped reduce the num-ber of faculty that would have been teaching overloaded schedules and has helped keep the class sizes smaller. The middle school launched a new program this year called The House System. At the beginning of the school year, all the teachers and students were sorted into teams or “houses” for the purpose of increasing school spirit and enjoying some friendly competition throughout the year in their quest for the House Cup. We were also able to initiate a couple of new events this year, the Big Greet and the Cavalier Shake. The Big Greet consisted of our middle school students greeting arriving elementary students with cheers, high-fives, words of encouragement, and generally showing them love of Christ. The Cavalier Shake was a competition that tested students on their ability to interact with adults and show their social skills, eye contact, listening, question-asking and a good firm handshake. It was an attempt to purposefully focus on the “Cultivate Re-sponsible Christian Adults” part of our mission statement. In addition, 1:1 Chromebook implementation has been completed, students have benefited from chapels and small groups, and we are in the beginning stages of planning a makeover for the Middle School quad area to make it more functional and aesthetic. This year has provided the Committee with some challenges as well as some opportunities to build on the already strong core of academic and spiritual programs in place at the middle school.

High School Education Committee

Jodi Schotanus - Chair, Gary Bosma, Michael Kornelis, Becky Kroeze, Lori Reeves, Rev. Joel Renkema, Tami Valov, Greg Wojczynski The High School Education Committee meets the first Monday of each month. The student body president is

invited to each meeting to give a summary of the activities that have happened on campus and upcoming

events they are planning. Every year three departments are chosen to give the committee an overview of

their goals, the curriculum, and any needs. This year we heard reports from Bible, Fine Arts, and Science.

Each department is focused on fulfilling CVC’s mission and integrating a Christian worldview.

The CVC Agricultural Education program was able to expand with the hire of Mr. Frank Orique to teach Ag

Mechanics. The teachers are continuing work on curriculum mapping and participation in Professional Learn-

ing Communities for CSI/WASC Accreditation requirements. An update to the Volunteer Handbook along

with a background check requirement was approved. With Mr. Greg Wojczynski moving to Pella and Alecia

VandenBerg moving to Michigan, the committee had some big shoes to fill. Qualified candidates were inter-

viewed for both positions and a contract for the high school principal position was extended to Krista Wright

from Grand Rapids Christian School, and Joelle Riezebos will be our new HS English teacher. We appreci-

ate each staff member for all the work they do and above all, we praise God for the great blessings He has

faithfully granted to CVC.

Mother’s Club

Eric Bons– Chair, Nick Leyendekker, Jack de Jong, John Schaap, Brent Calvin, Dane Moll, Larry Baker While the D & P Committee did not hold any meetings this year, the property to the north of Sierra Village and CVC schools officially became annexed into the City of Visalia in August of 2017. The next steps are to record a parcel map, plan for relocation of storm drain basin, the alignment of Cypress Avenue, and finalize an agree-ment between the land owners to identify the responsibilities and financial commitments associated with the various phases in order to accomplish the goals of the master plan for the 34.5 acres.

The Mother’s Club mission is to provide support to the staff and students at CVC. As an auxiliary club of CVC,

our purpose is to prayerfully aim for a closer relationship between home and school. We raise funds to en-

hance our classrooms and provide for the educational needs of the students at CVC. We provide support by

offering a place to volunteer for school activities, social events and day-to-day opportunities on campus. In

addition, we connect with parents, providing an opportunity for them to meet other parents and be part of the

CVC community.

Mother’s Club supported our school in many ways this past year. A CVC van was purchased for the cam-

puses to utilize. We provided the funds for a new and updated resource curriculum for the Learning Resource

teachers. We provided the Middle School with funds for a robotics class, math white boards, and new sound

equipment. Money was given to the High School for new storage cabinets for the art room as well as math

room white boards. We continue to give four scholarships each year for our high school seniors. Mother’s

Club also provided the funding to begin the volunteer background checks that are crucial for our student

safety. We continue to support CVC’s fine arts and sports programs, as well as field trips, classroom supplies

and more.

Transportation: We are thankful to God for providing our bus drivers and students with another safe year on the road. Our bus fleet has been upgraded with the addition of two 10-passenger vans, the cost to purchase being donated by Agriculture Education and Mother’s Club. Plans for a third propane bus (via grant) and new diesel bus are in the works. We want to thank Beth and her team for providing excellent care and safety for our children. Buildings & Grounds: We have been working hard to keep up with day-to-day maintenance and to keep the campuses looking clean and attractive. We thank Case, Ruben and the night crew for all the extra, unseen work they do to keep our campuses looking good. We also continue to monitor ongoing research by the re-cently formed Master Plan Task Force as it relates to campus needs, safety and development of the property north of the school and Sierra Village.

Endowment Foundation Board - Art Van Beek - President, Steve Scheenstra - Vice-President, Dane Moll - Treasurer, Jeannette DeGroot - Secretary The Endowment Foundation’s purpose is to help control the cost of tuition at Central Valley Christian School. The value of the Endowment Foundation stood at $2,671,217 as of January 1, 2018. It has had slow but steady growth and this year will contribute $106,405.00 to the general fund which helps keep the cost of tui-tion affordable. Many families are starting to use the Endowment Foundation as a way to honor the passing of a loved one or to celebrate a special occasion such as an anniversary, birthday or graduation. There is also the more tradi-tional giving done through estate planning and wills. The Barnabas Foundation manages our fund and is available to help with these sort of plans free of charge. Big or small we are thankful for each and every gift.

Boosters Executive Committee

Richard Vander Tuig - President, Kent McNiece - Vice President, Tom Van Grouw - Treasurer, Andrea Bouwman - Secretary, Steven Annema, Athletic Director The Boosters Club is an organization of CVC parents and supporters who encourage interscholastic athletics at CVC. The Boosters Club has been very generously supported through its fundraisers which include the Pancake Breakfast, The Sports Book, Stadium Banners, Concession Stands, and the Golf Tournament. Due to these fundraisers, the Boosters Club has been able to supply team uniforms, send coaches to training camps, and provide varsity athletes with end-of season dinners. Boosters will also supply a variety of equip-ment to a sport when requested and not covered by the regular budget. Please note that all parents and sup-porters of CVC are eligible for membership, especially parents of athletes. The Boosters Club needs more people to be involved. If you have a student athlete at CVC or enjoy CVC and sports, please join us! Boost-ers encourages good sportsmanship and proper behavior from all of its fans because we represent something greater than just our student athletes and the school. God has continued to bless the athletic programs at CVC. We are grateful to God and give Him the glory and honor in all that we do.

Technology Committee

Matt Verdegaal - Chair, Eric Bons, Ben Houseward, Rev. Dieleman, Julie Cardoza, Dorinda Koelewyn, Larry Baker, Kevin Langmaack, Tara Bosma The Technology Committee is working hard to stay current and best prepare our graduates to change the world for Christ through their education at CVC. This was a big year as we expanded the 1:1 laptop program to include all grades from 7th through 12th. Students are using the Chromebooks to learn valuable tools to help them not only in their education here at CVC but beyond our school. We’ve implemented an updated scope and sequence in the elementary to cover relevant technology topics at the appropriate grade levels, and introduced a variety of new tools for teachers to enhance classroom learning. We have plans to make much needed improvements to the structure of the network to accommodate the addition of so many more devices from Pre-K to high school that are all utilizing the internet in new ways that evolve each year. We want to thank Tara Bosma for filling the role of Technology Integrator for the last 3 years and helping to ad-vance the way technology is used to improve classroom learning. Nathan De Groot will be taking the baton as we transition into our updated technology plan for the next few years. We are excited about how technol-ogy can be used to help CVC accomplish its mission.

Kaye Verhoeven- Chair, Marissa Carpenter, Nicole Mulder, Kelly Verdegaal, Larry Baker With enrollment on the rise the past few years, the Marketing & Enrollment Department keeps a steady pace balancing the tasks at hand. The Promotions Committee meets once a month to review the current and upcoming tasks and to support the staff who work diligently through-out the year. The Marketing & Enrollment Department placed many local print advertisements as well as electronic advertisements. This year, the Department implemented Search Engine Optimization (SEO), and we are thankful to report an increase in inquiries and applications. Our committee is blessed to support Marissa and Nicole, who are both exceptional. We are grateful for the faithfulness of the CVC Society, and we look forward to what God has in store for us here!

Because of the success of the SCRIP program and the amount of business that flows through that office, it is under the supervision of the Finance Committee. SCRIP has consistently been one of our fundraisers that not only helps the school but thanks parents by returning some of the profits back to them in the form of a tuition rebate. It is a win-win situation that benefits both school and parents. We encourage more families to utilize the SCRIP program and are thankful for our faithful families who currently are buying SCRIP. The SCRIP office is located in the Elementary Administration Building and its operating hours can be found on the school website at www.cvc.org.

The responsibilities of the Finance Committee include recommend-ing the annual budget to the Board each year, oversight of the various sources of income and how funds are disbursed related to the functions of the school, and consideration of variable tuition requests from families. We are blessed by our generous and faithful Lord, and blessed by a generous and faithful Central Valley Christian School Society committed to providing Christian education.

The Agricultural Education Department at CVC is led by Department Head Ms. Kadie

Calac and Mr. Frank Orique. A large component of the program is the Future Farmers

of America organization.

The national FFA organization requires that each chapter have an Ag Advisory Com-

mittee which sets direction for the program and is required to make periodic reports to

the national leadership.

The Ag Boosters’ Club was formed this year in anticipation of taking over the fundrais-

ing aspect of helping to support CVC Ag Education. Bylaws for this new auxiliary com-

mittee were drawn up and approved by the CVC School Board. Once the Ag Advisory

Committee has reached their agreed upon goal of funding CVC Ag Education, the Ag

Boosters’ Club will assume the role to raise funds, volunteer, and encourage the devel-

opment of Ag leadership. Anyone is welcome to support the Ag Booster Club and at-

tend meetings held throughout the year. We look forward to being an active group and

will keep the society informed when regular meetings will be scheduled.
