The boy has found an old camera on the beach. He opens up the camera and there is a film inside. That film will have all the pictures that have been taken on the camera stored inside it.

Main Activity

There are no words in Flotsam by David Wiesner, only pictures. You are going to add some words to the picture above. Think about the following:

• What has the boy found? • What is the boy thinking? • How is he feeling? • What might he do next?

Ready: Talk to your grown up about the picture above. Pretend to be the boy. What are you thinking about?

• What happened when Selfie’s video was made public? How did it make them feel?

Your Activity: Create a poster for Sam, Ellie and Alfie’s new band Selfie. Come up with a design that shows off each character’s talents and personality.

Ready: I can recognise and name 2D shapes. Draw a square: Draw a circle: Draw a triangle: Draw a rectangle: Complete Maths Tuesday Ready Activity.

Watch Flotsam up to 2:01 (also linked on class webpage): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MTKWnxzqvM The boy takes the camera film to be developed – take a minute to talk to your grown up about what this means. How is the camera different to the cameras you are used to seeing? Here are some of the photographs that the boy finds on the camera:

Geography: The UK Listen to The Town Mouse and The Country Mouse (also linked on class webpage): https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-radio/audio-stories-the-town-mouse-and-the-country-mouse/zrcrvk7

Main Activity Look at the pictures below. Some of these things are found in the countryside. Some are found in towns or cities. Ready: Cut out the pictures and sort them into two piles: one for the countryside and one for the town. Talk to your grown up about the different pictures. Have you seen any of these things before? Steady: Cut out the pictures and sort them into two piles: one for the countryside and one for the town. Now think about where you would find the following:

Page 6: Full Week-Home learning WB 22.06.20 › ... · PIC Home Learning WB 22.06.20 Maths Focus: Geometry: property of shapes English Focus: Flotsam by David Wiesner The Wider World Focus:

Steady: I can sort 2D shapes. Sort the following shapes into the correct circle.

How do you think these shapes have been sorted?

Whitney is sorting her shapes by the number of sides. Which shapes could go in each group?

Go: I can identify and describe 3D shapes. Complete the steady work and then:

What do you think about these pictures? Are they what you were expecting to see?

Main Activity

Choose your favourite picture from the 3 above. You are going to describe what you can see in the picture.

• Busy streets • Traffic jams • Quiet • Houses • Campsites • Football stadium

Go: Below is a venn diagram. One circle says town and the other says country. The two circles overlap in the middle. This is where you would put things that you might find in both the town and the country. Sort the words in the boxes either side of the venn diagram into the right place.

Where could these shapes go in the Venn diagram?

Ready: Talk to your grown up about the picture you have chosen. What can you see in the picture? What is normal about the picture and what is unusual? Describe the different colours. Steady: Write 5 sentences about your picture using the sentence starter “I can see…” Try to include a range of adjectives to describe what you can see – can you describe more than the colours? Think about the textures, shapes and sizes too. e.g. I can see a scaly fish swimming through the turquoise ocean. Go: Write a paragraph describing your picture. Include expanded noun phrases (two adjectives separated by a comma) to create a clear description. Try to use a range of sentence starters. e.g. In front of the scaly, red fish are tiny, green fish swimming quickly through the ocean.

Wednesday 24th June

Maths English The Wider World Ready: I can recognise and name 2D shapes. Ask your grown up to read you the following clues. Then guess the shape.

1. I have 3 straight sides. I have 3 corners. Who am I?

2. I have 4 straight sides. All my sides are the same length. Who am I?

3. I have one curved side. Who am I? 4. I have 4 straight sides. 2 of my sides

are longer and 2 are shorter. Who am I?

Now play the game with your grown up. Can you describe the shape to them without saying the name? Then swap roles. Steady: I can identify and describe 3D shapes. Draw a larger version of the following table and complete. The first one has been done for you. You can use the 3D shape word mat to help.

Look at this picture from Flotsam:

• What is happening? What has the boy

seen? • How is he feeling? How can you tell? • What is he using to look at the

photograph more closely? • Why do you think he is using it?

Watch Flotsam up to 2:41 (also linked on class webpage): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MTKWnxzqvM

Geography: The UK

Yesterday we learnt about the differences between the town and countryside. Where do you live? In a town or in the countryside? Today we are going to learn about the country we live in: The United Kingdom (UK). The UK is made up of 4 countries: England

• What is happening in the final picture of

the book? You are going to be creating a sequel to Flotsam, telling the story of the child who found the camera next. In order to tell the story of the girl, you will need to think about the following:

• Where is the camera found? • Who finds it? • What is on the film? • How it ends?

Below is the outline of Flotsam to help you remember the sequence of events.

Geography: The UK The arrow is pointing to London. London is a capital city. It is the largest city in England. It is a very busy and built-up city with lots of important buildings. Almost 9 million people live in London! Have you or your family ever visited London?

Triangle

Rectangle

Search around your house and try and find 2 or 3 examples of these 2D shapes in everyday objects. Then draw a picture of them in your home learning journal.

Main Activity You are going to use the planning grid below to plan your story. Draw a picture in each box to show what is happening in each part of your story. You can re-watch Flotsam and look at the plan above to help you.

London has lots of famous landmarks. Google pictures of the following:

• The London Eye • The Shard • Big Ben • Buckingham Palace • Houses of Parliament • Tower Bridge • Westminster Abbey

Which one would you like to visit the most? Why?

Main Activity Create a poster for the London landmark you would like to visit the most. You could include a big picture of the landmark and then you could research some facts about it. Make your poster as colourful and creative as you like.

Friday 26th June Maths English The Wider World

Ready: I can make patterns with 2D shapes.

Annie is making a pattern:

Can you say the pattern out loud? What comes after the triangle? What comes before the rectangle? Amir and Eva are making patterns:

Who do you agree with? Why?

Today you are going to write you sequel to Flotsam. You are going to use your plan from yesterday to help you.

Main Activity Ready: Cut out the pictures from your plan and sequence them, one underneath the other, in the correct order. You are going to write a sentence next to each picture telling the reader what is happening. You can say your sentence out loud to your grown up, they can write it down and then you can copy it. Steady: You are going to write your story. Each picture is a different section of your story. Try to write two or three sentences for each picture. Try and include some adjectives to describe different parts of your story, for example what the girl sees in the photographs. Don’t forget capital letters and full stops! Go: You are going to write your story. Each picture is a new paragraph.

Geography: The UK While London is the capital city of England, the city we live in is called Portsmouth. The arrow on the map is pointing to Portsmouth. There are lots of wonderful things to do in Portsmouth and lots of people visit our city every year.

Play the following game (linked on class webpage): https://www.topmarks.co.uk/ordering-and-sequencing/shape-patterns Steady and Go: I can make patterns with shapes.

Here is a repeating pattern with 2D shapes. What will the next 2 shapes in the pattern be?

Here is a repeating pattern with 3D shapes. What are the names of the shapes that are missing in the pattern?

Make your own repeating pattern with these shapes. Play the following game (linked on class webpage): https://www.topmarks.co.uk/ordering-and-sequencing/shape-patterns

Try to write three or four sentences for each paragraph. Include an expanded noun phrase to describe what the girl sees in the photographs. You could also try and include some speech (with speech marks). What might the girl say when she finds the camera?

Main Activity Imagine that a friend or a family member is planning a holiday to Portsmouth. What do you think they should do when they visit? What are your favourite things to do in Portsmouth? You are going to create a holiday brochure using the template below. Page 1: front cover. Think of a title (for example, Visit Portsmouth!). Draw a picture of Portsmouth and write a sentence either welcoming them on their holiday or giving them some information about the city. Page 2: Things to see and do. You can choose 2 of your favourite things to see and do (or research some new ideas) and include some information about them, as well as a picture. Page 3: Where to go. Is there a place they must go while they are here? Somewhere else that you like to visit?
