ALCHEMEA College refers exclusively to industry standards (see Employer Involvement) as the benchmark for Pass/Distinction, where Pass is suitable for work that would be acceptable in the industry, and Distinction is suitable for work that would be acceptable in the industry and shows flair and creativity beyond the basic requirements of the assignment brief. By ensuring that the course directly meets the requirements of employers, the course meets National Occupational Standards, as laid out by Creative and Cultural Skills, the Sector Skills Agency responsible for music. Statement Of Level Equivalence Although ALCHEMEA is an independent college and the Diploma course has been developed independently by recording industry professionals, it is equivalent in all respects to a qualification at level 3 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF), and the Qualifications Credit Framework (QCF), and meets (and in some cases exceeds) the definition of a “Diploma” on the QCF. The facilities and resources available at ALCHEMEA far exceed the requirements of a level 3 course, and would put many degree courses to shame.

DIPLOMA IN LIVE SOUND ENGINEERING Why train as a Live Sound Engineer at Alchemea? With the music industry relying more and more on live performance for profitability, the scope for employment in the live sound industry is proportionately increasing. Nearly half of all jobs lie in the live sector and the explosion of events and festivals large and small has led to a shortage of competent, trained live sound engineers. Record labels have also adjusted their strategies to put live events at the heart of their business models. After all, a gig is one product you can't pirate. Alchemea have therefore developed an exiting new Live Sound course. This will be an extremely intensive practically focused 4-month program, which can be taken in addition to our SAC and Diploma courses or as a stand-alone module. Course Aim: The Live Sound Course aims to produce confident, skilled and employable personnel for the live sound industry – from Rock and Roll venues and hire companies, to theatre and corporate functions. Learning Outcomes: At the end of the course, students will be able to:

• Work safely with a clear understanding of the Health and Safety at Work regulations

• Confidently set up both small and large sound systems and configure them as per requirements (separate monitor and front of house/monitors run from front of house)

• Understand the principles and have practiced mixing both front of house and monitors, including using live musicians

• Confidently “ring out” a system to prevent feedback • Understand the nature of sound and make intelligent decisions

regarding loudspeaker placement, mix position placement and the best way to approach a space

• Be familiar with the standard range of microphones found in almost all live situations, know how to select the best microphone for the job and how to get the best sound out of it

• Have an in-depth understanding of cabling and connectors and be able to make up and maintain their own

• Understand how to safely distribute mains power on a stage • Have an in-depth understanding of analogue mixers and two commonly

found digital mixers (the Yamaha M7CL and Digidesign Venue) • Understand and effectively use: EQ, Dynamics (compressors, limiters

and gates) and all kinds off effects • Understand how sound systems are put together and how to design

their own to a given set of requirements • Understand how to find the fault in a system that is not working

Page 19: Full Time Course Brochure May 5 2009

• Do a live multi-track recording in Protools via the Digidesign desk • Have a basic understanding of loudspeaker design, and how to match

amplifiers and loudspeakers • Analyse a system within a space • Understand the processes involved in rigging a large system • Perform a Risk Assessment • Have a basic knowledge of live sound for theatre and be introduced to

this discipline as a possible career path • Understand how a big show is put together, the personnel and roles

involved and procedures for “getting in” and “getting out” • Have a basic understanding of lighting in order to make our graduates

more employable in small venues • Set up DJs properly for club nights • Run, as a group, a three-bands-and-a-DJ night from scratch. Students

will be able to effectively communicate with the artistes, decide on the PA and monitor requirements, organise running orders for soundchecks and performances, stage manage the night, run all the mixes and pack away properly

Digidesign 210V VENUE Training Included Digidesign's offical VENUE 210V course and certification exam are integrated into our Live Sound Diploma Course. This module focuses on configuration, operation, mixing techniques and record/playback with Pro Tools systems. Gaining 210V certification will boost your CV and ultimately make you more employable. Safety Passport Crew involved in the production of live events should have a solid grasp of Health & Safety regulations. The Alchemea Live Sound Toolkit Our Live Sound Course students will gain an recognised "Safety Passport" through the Safety Pass Alliance and the Production Services Association (PSA). It is essential that a good live sound engineer has the correct tools for the job. We provide all Live Sound Course students with a multmeter, multitool, maglight, ear protectors, sharpie and electrical tape (and a crew t-shirt). Our Venue The Fridge in Brixton will be the home for their new Live Sound Diploma Course. The management of The Fridge in Brixton has been taken back into the safe hands of owners Andrew Czezowski and Susan Carrington, and is currently being dusted down and spruced up as a major live music venue once again.

Page 21: Full Time Course Brochure May 5 2009

With the demise of the Astoria following Transport for London's Crossrail development, The Fridge in Brixton is one of only a handful of decent mid-size venues left in the capital and one of only two fully independent operations (NOT part of any major chain of venues!) Equidistant to Brixton's Tube station with the O2 Academy (turn left out of the tube instead of right!), the 1,100 capacity Fridge boasts fantastic acoustics and perfect sightlines for all 1,100 customers – as old cinemas always do – and an 80 capacity VIP bar that can double as an after-show / album launch / acoustic room. Alchemea has installed a world class PA system which will be looked after by one of the industry’s leading live sound engineers, Alan “Nobby” Hopkinson. The Fridge’s management is currently working with top event promoter Barry Marshall-Everitt (ex-Borderline & Mean Fiddler) to ensure that students gain plenty of practical experience of concert productions as they happen. In the words of Barry they will see “the good, the bad and sometimes the down right ugly......perfect training.” The History of The Fridge Having begun their careers as seminal live rock gig promoters Andrew Czezowski, [ex-manager of the Damned, Generation X with Billy Idol, Adam Ant etc.] and Susan Carrington then opened the Fridge in Brixton in 1981. Andrew & Susan had previously established "The Roxy", the world’s first punk club in Covent Garden London in 1976/77. The Fridge hosted the first gigs of acts such as the Pet Shop Boys, Jimmy Sommerville & Bronski Beat, Sade, Nick Cave with The Bad Seeds and Marc Almond, and later promoted everyone from The Sun Ra Arkestra (their last ever gig in the UK), to Eartha Kitt, Grace Jones, St Etienne, Roy Ayers, Gil Scott-Herron, Nico, (unfortunately also her last gig ever) and Take That. With Robbie. The Fridge additionally won a reputation for world famous club nights such as Talkin' Loud and Soul II Soul, and then drove the explosion of rave in the 90’s by becoming the home for long-running trance nights Escape from Samsara, Return to the Source, Pendragon and Logic. Gay night Love Muscle pushed buttons and boundaries to such an extent it changed the direction of Gay night clubbing. Andrew and Susan also created the most successful Lesbian club in the World, first with Eves Revenge, followed by Venus Rising, regularly attracting 1100 lesbian clubbers every month. In January of 2004 Andrew and Susan let out the Fridge and took a long deserved break until November 3rd 2008, when they took back full management and ownership of the best club in London, located in Brixton, the capital of live music in South London. Andrew & Susan's collaboration with Alchemea heralds a new and exiting chapter in Fridge's colourful story.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Our goal at Alchemea is to give students the skills and confidence to carve a successful career in the Pro Audio Industry. Any good Audio Engineering course will be hard work, costly and will take many months, or with many of our competitors, years to complete. The questions below are designed to help you compare Alchemea with other colleges and decide which one is best for you. How do our facilties compare? Alchemea’s studios are equipped to the highest professional standards. From the latest Pro Tools control surfaces to classic analogue consoles and outboard equipment, Alchemea will give you the tools to ensure that you can acquire the skills and confidence to operate in a professional recording environment. We have 5 control rooms (including an SSL G-series, 5.1 Cinema Dubbing Theatre & Pro Tools HD training suite. Each control room is self-contained, soundproofed and air-conditioned with access to our 4 acoustically treated live recording areas. Is it true that you will give me my own mobile studio? Indeed it is. As part of your media pack we will give you your own Apple MacBook, Digidesign M-Box 2 mini, Rhode M3 mic, M-Audio Keyrig 25 controller keyboard as well as the mic stand, pop shield and cables. Everything you need to get recording and producing whether you are at home or in the field. Importantly it will give you access to Pro Tools so if there is a gap between you completing your studies and getting a job you can keep you skills up to date. But I already have a MacBook we hear you cry! Well – sorry but we can’t upgrade it however you are free to flog it and put the proceeds towards your course fees. Or make someone very happy and give it away as a present! Oh yes – you also receive a yearly subscription to Sound on Sound Magazine. This includes extra members access to their excellent website www.soundonsound.com How many digital audio workstations? As well as our studio and classroom computers we have 6 dedicated DAW’s (Digital Audio Workstations): 6 x Apple Mac Pro’s using Digidesign M-Box sound cards. All are loaded up with all the latest sequencing software, virtual instruments and audio plug-ins (including the new UAD-2 Solo cards with ALL the plugins!!!) To top it off you can patch from the workstations to any of the live recording areas via our wall box and central patchbay. What about lectures and classroom facilities? Alchemea has 2 classrooms both with workstation controlled projection systems. The primary setting for Diploma & SAC lectures is our Apple Training Room. It is also used for the short evening and weekend courses. Every effort has been made to create the optimum training environment. The room is air-conditioned, lighting is controllable and the furniture has been custom designed for comfort. The room has been acoustically treated and instructors use a wireless mic system to ensure that students can hear (and that instructors don’t lose their voice!). In the classroom students benefit from the use of their own 20” Apple (Intel) iMac, Digidesign M Box and M-Audio Radium 49 keyboard. The iMac’s are loaded with all the latest music production software and instructors can take control of student’s workstations via Apple Desktop Pro.

Page 37: Full Time Course Brochure May 5 2009

Alchemea is committed to providing the highest standard of practical hands on audio training using the latest technology. Are there any Entry Requirements? Due to the intensive nature of this course the minimum age requirement for the Diploma is 18. While there are no formal entry requirements enrolment is subject to an interview with Alchemea’s College Registrar. If the Registrar has doubts regarding the prospective students suitability for the course then a College Director will hold a second interview. Phone interviews will take place where it is not possible for interviews to be carried out in person. Every student enrolled on a full-time course at ALCHEMEA, must provide ALCHEMEA with a copy of his or her passport. Non-EU students must also provide a copy of their student visa. We advise that candidates also forward any supporting documentation like qualifications and English language certificates. Is my qualification industry recognised? Alchemea has the enviable reputation of being one of the leading providers of audio education in the world. Our standards are high. Our courses are vocational, practically orientated, intensive, and require real commitment. Because of this employers recognise that our successful students not only have the practical “real world” skills but have also acclimatised to the pressures of a demanding workplace. Alchemea is the only Digidesign “Pro School” in the South of England. Diploma student’s have the option to take Digidesign’ s Pro Tools Operator Certification Course (210). If you pass the online exam then you will become a “Digidesign Certified Operator”. You will also be awarded a certificate from Digidesign and be listed as an operator their website. This qualification is a guarantee to employers that you are competent and confident on what is now the industry standard application for music and post-production. Alchemea are also an Authorised Apple Training Centre and we integrate the Logic 101 course and certification exam into the Diploma. We are now also an Ableton Certified Training Centre! What level is this course? Although Alchemea is an independent college and the Diploma course has been developed independently by recording industry professionals, it is equivalent in all respects to a qualification at level 3 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF), and the Qualifications Credit Framework (QCF), and meets (and in some cases exceeds) the definition of a Diploma on the QCF. The facilities and resources available at Alchemea far exceed the requirements of a level 3 course and would put many degree courses to shame. 10. We do not believe that large class sizes allow for the necessary level of individual attention from our tutors. We also appreciate that students learn at differing paces and want to ensure that no one falls behind. For some practical lessons each class is split into even smaller class sizes. How many students per course? 20 students per enrolment. There are 3 courses running at any given time (each course at a different stage). So the maximum number of students at Alchemea at any time is 60. That’s it. What is the maximum class size? 10. We do not believe that large class sizes allow for the necessary level of individual attention from our tutors. We also appreciate that students learn at differing paces and want to ensure that no one falls behind. For some practical lessons each class is split into even smaller class sizes. How many hours of individual practical time will I get?

Page 38: Full Time Course Brochure May 5 2009

Here is the maths: 13 facilities, 24 hours a day 7 days a week, divided by 60 students = 30.8 hours per student per week. In fact we GUARANTEE that by the end of your course you will have accumulated at least 1080 hours of individual practical time. That’s an average of over 30 hours per week – guaranteed. This is why we are renowned for providing more individual practical time in our studios and on our workstations than any other college. Whilst central to the Alchemea method that an individual learns best by "doing" rather than watching someone else, assisting others is useful too and so encouraged. This time is in ADDITION to the 30 hours per week we guarantee. Smaller classes have the chance to book even more practical time. Is the college really open 24/7? Yes. Apart from a 2- week shut down period for maintenance / studio upgrades in June and over Christmas, we never close! Our facilities are available to our students and fully supervised 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You are allocated (and can book extra) practical time day or night – whichever suits you. Can I meet the students, both past and present? Yes, in fact we encourage you to do so. We also invite ex-students to our open days so that you can chat to them and find out what they are up to now. Beware of colleges who don’t let prospective students meet current or past ones! Will I get a job when I finish the course? Well, nothing is guaranteed but our statistics speak for themselves: to date over 85% of our Diploma graduates have begun their careers in their chosen field within 6 months of leaving Alchemea. Ask to see the list of graduates or look at "Student Profiles" on the web site www.alchemea.com to see what some of our ex-students are up to in the big bad world. Does the college actively help its graduates get a job? Yes. An industry professional with extensive experience as a studio manager provides training in CV preparation, interview technique and job hunting. Recording studios, recognising the quality of Alchemea graduates regularly contact us when looking for staff. I Alchemea’s College Manager is also our dedicated key link between the studios and the students and is there to help guide you into the workplace. If you work hard, achieve good result, have a positive attitude and are a nice person we will forward you for interview.

ALCHEMEA COLLEGE FULL TIME COURSE REGISTRATION AGREEMENT

REV: 17/02/2009

1. Definitions 1.1 The following words, as explained, are used in this registration agreement:

a. “Course” - means the series of classes and practical studio work in which the student is enrolled. b. “Registration Fee” - means the sum of money paid by the student to reserve a place in one of ALCHEMEA’s courses. c. “College” - means ALCHEMEA College of Audio Engineering and/or its appointed agents. d. “Student” - means the signatory of these terms and conditions. e. “Studio” - means the studios and workstations provided for students both in the college premises and outside.

2. Fees & Refunds 2.1 The student agrees to pay the full registration fee upon application and the tuition fee or first instalment at least one month before the date of commencement. 2.2 If the student does not pay the tuition fee or first instalment within one month of the commencement date, his or her place may be offered to another student. 2.3 The registration fee is not refundable. A student may change course dates or course type at no cost by giving us at least one calendar month’s notice prior to the commencement

of the course the student is booked on at the time. If notice of less than one calendar month is given, the registration fee will be forfeited. The student may book onto another course but a new registration fee will be payable.

2.4 If a student’s loan is refused or a student visa is rejected, ALCHEMEA will refund any registration fee minus a £40 administration charge. 2.5 The ALCHEMEA instalment plan is only available for students from European Union countries. Students who fail to keep up with repayments will be suspended from the

course. ALCHEMEA reserves the right to take whatever action is necessary to recover the outstanding debt, including taking legal action and referring the outstanding balance to a debt collection agency. Such actions will have a negative impact on the student's credit rating and will affect his/her ability to apply for credit in the future

3. Content of Course 3.1 The Student understands that the College is entitled to change the content of the course in which the student is enrolled at any time, allowing for new topics to be introduced and

inappropriate topics to be deleted, without prior notice. 4. Studio use 4.1 The student is responsible for ensuring that none of the equipment is damaged or stolen as a direct or indirect result of a failure on his or her part to exercise reasonable care in

use of the equipment made available for their use. 4.2 If a student invites a guest or guests (e.g. musicians) into the ALCHEMEA studios, it is the student’s responsibility to make sure the guest(s) observe these rules and regulations. 4.3 In the event that the equipment in the studio is not functioning during the student’s use of the studio, the student agrees to notify the supervisor immediately giving full details of

the fault. 4.4 In the event that the equipment in the studio(s) is damaged or stolen during the student’s use of the studio as a result of failure on his or her part to exercise reasonable care in

the studio(s), the student agrees to pay within twenty one (21) days all costs relevant to replacing, repairing or hiring replacements for such equipment. 4.5 The College reserves the right to cancel the student’s booked studio time. All attempts will be made to notify the student of such cancellation. Times lost due to such cancellation

will be re-booked in favour of the student. 5. Cancellation 5.1 If a student does not attend lectures for 3 whole weeks, the College will regard such a non-attendance as implied cancellation of the course; any fees not paid will become

immediately due. Exceptions may be made on humanitarian grounds. 6 Attendance 6.1 Student attendance is monitored throughout the duration of the course. Students are expected to attend all lectures and practical sessions. For the purpose of monitoring and to

facilitate our disciplinary procedure we expect a student to attend at least 80% of their lectures and practical sessions (computer workstation sessions excluded). If a student’s attendance falls below 80% then they will be subject to ALCHEMEA’s disciplinary procedure which is outline in the student handbook.

6.2 Students are expected to arrive on time for their lectures. If a student is late for a lecture more than 3 times without warning or good reason then they will be subject to ALCHEMEA’S disciplinary procedure.

6.3 The student will not be allowed to attend lectures or studio time, if his or her fees are not paid in full or instalment payments are in arrears. 6.4 Special importance is given to practical time. Students will have to complete all exercises set in the curriculum, engineering sessions as outlined during the course. Since the

college is open 24 hours a day, it will be expected that students will be required to work through the night. When practical work requires students to attend venues outside ALCHEMEA, it is the student’s responsibility to get to the venue on time.

7 Conduct 6.1 ALCHEMEA promotes equal opportunities. Abusive behaviour and / or discrimination based upon sex, age or ethnic origin will not be tolerated. ALCHEMEA employs a

disciplinary procedure (outlined in the student handbook) and a possible outcome of a student’s hearing is expulsion. 7 Accreditation 7.1 Students are assessed throughout the course, on a competency basis. A report is drafted on each student, and that report is the basis of the SAC and / or the diploma. The pass

mark is 50% and to attain the “Diploma” a student must achieve 70%. Students must score 90% or over on their online Digidesign 210 exam to become a “Digidesign Certified Operator”. If a student fails the 210 exam on a second attempt, Digidesign will charge a fee for re-examination. For up to date information regarding this fee visit the training area of www.digidesign.com

8 Entry Requirements 8.1 Due to their intensive nature, the minimum age requirement for ALCHEMEA’S full time courses is 18. 8.2 Enrolment is subject to an interview with ALCHEMEA’s College Registrar. If the Registrar has doubts regarding the prospective students suitability for the course then a College

Director will hold a second interview. Phone interviews will take place where it is not possible for interviews to be carried out in person. 8.3 While there are no formal qualification requirements we look for students ideally to have achieved a grade C or above in maths and a science at GCSE level. 8.4 To strengthen applications we expect that candidates forward documentation to support qualifications and English language certificates. Their validity will be verified against

NARIC’s database (www.naric.org.uk). 8.5 If your application is successful we will require 2 passport photographs, a copy of your passport (photo page) and for students outside the European Union, a copy of your

student VISA. We appreciate that student VISA’s may have to follow closer to the course start date. Overseas Students ALCHEMEA is an International College, assisting both local and overseas applicants in achieving their goals. Providing the requirements are met, ALCHEMEA will assist overseas students in obtaining a Student’s Visa where required. Please contact the college for further details. Non-EU students who have been granted a VISA by the British Immigration Authority (BIA) must provide ALCHEMEA with a copy of their passport and VISA before commencement of their studies. It is the student’s responsibility to inform ALCHEMEA when there is a change to their VISA status. If a student’s studies are terminated, ALCHEMEA will inform the BIA in writing. Media Pack The course fees include storage media that should be sufficient to complete assignments set. If additional media is required permission must be gained to use magnetic media not supplied by ALCHEMEA. Magnetic media can be purchased from the college, at reduced prices. SAC & Diploma students receive a Digidesign Mbox Mini audio interface with Pro Tools LE software as part of the course. Diploma students also receive a mobile recording studio, which includes an Apple MacBook and a Digidesign Mbox Mini audio interface with Pro Tools LE software. The MacBook will only become the student’s property once ALCHEMEA have received 35% of the total amount payable. Class Sizes & Schedules As a rule, lecture class size will be restricted to ten students. For this reason we encourage students not to change classes during the course. There may be occasions (for example seminars / workshops) when classes will be combined. Outside Work When it is necessary for students to take equipment out of the premises, this should be pre-arranged, and equipment, signed for. It is advisable for students to arrange insurance on equipment themselves, since they are personally liable for any damage or loss of the equipment. The proof of insurance might be requested prior to lending of the equipment. This insurance can be arranged via the college. Equipment is only allowed out of the premises if it is being used as part of the course. Equal Opportunities Policy ALCHEMEA admits students of any race, colour, national and ethnic origin. ALCHEMEA does not discriminate on the basis of race, colour, sex, sexual orientation, handicap or national or ethnic origin in the administration of its educational policies, admission policies, scholarship and other college administered programmes. Job Opportunities Students who receive their Diploma and display a good attitude during their studies will be put forward for job interviews as they arise. ALCHEMEA has strong links with leading studios these employers recognise the quality of our graduates. ALCHEMEA is pro-active in assisting students with CV preparation and we have a dedicated staff member who assists students to find employment. Please ensure that you have read and understood this registration agreement before applying for a course of study at ALCHEMEA.
