Fuels
Does an athlete need fuel?
Fuels which burn with a flame..
…need the 3 things shown above
A fuel is a substance which
has stored energy that can be changed into a useful form, usually this is
heat..
Fuels burn to release their energy, if the release is quick then the result is
more explosive
Burning is called combustion. See if you can write a word equation..
Fuel + oxygen = carbon dioxide + waterFuel + oxygen = carbon dioxide + water
Example:Example:
methane + oxygen = carbon dioxide + watermethane + oxygen = carbon dioxide + water
Unfortunately, because most fuels are hydrocarbons, products of burning can
be harmful..
Where do hydrocarbons come from?
Diesel and petrol are made from crude oil. Crude oil, natural gas and coal are fossil fuels.
Fossil fuels take millions of years to form. They are made up from the remains of plants & animals which died millions of years ago.
