Objectives explained
Objective: r.40.7 Enjoys an increasing range of books.
The objectives on the planning are taken directly from the Early Year curriculum which can be found at

The number within the objective is the age band it falls in e.g. an objective which has 40 in is the 40-60+ months section. An objective with ELG
stands for Early Learning Goal and children are expected to achieve most of these by the end of the year.
The number at the end of the objective denotes which bullet point within the age band it is.
If your child is struggling with the objectives given look at the objectives in the band below. If you feel that your child needs additional
tasks look at the objectives in the band above.

Daily virtual lessons for children
From Monday 23rd March we’re scheduling Read Write Inc. Phonics lessons on Facebook and YouTube for children to watch at home.
We will release three short Speed Sound lessons with one of our trainers every day for the next two weeks. The films will only be available at
the times below:
•Set 1 Speed Sounds at 9.30 am and again at 12.30 pm
•Set 2 Speed Sounds at 10.00 am and again at 1.00 pm
Please note: the films are streamed live and won’t be available at other times.
We’re also releasing a film of a poem for Reception and Year 1 children to join in with at 2.00 pm every day. The poems will be available on
YouTube to watch again and again.

Sentence
challenge
-With your child write the sentence (you modelling writing each word and they copy) :
-Once upon a time there was a duck. He did all the work. The end.
-Write one sentence at a time
-Count how many words are in the sentence
-The words in red are words which must be learnt and cannot be sounded out. Look at the part of the word which is ‘tricky’ e.g. The – ‘th’ can be
sounded out but it is the ‘e’ at the end which cannot be heard

-The words in green can be sounded out using ‘Fred Fingers’. This means you sound out the word and show how many sounds are in the word e.g.
u-p-o-n needs 4 ‘Fred Fingers’. Show your child 4 fingers, ask them to do the same and then pinch each finger as the word is sounded out.
Repeat this several times before writing the word
-Add in a full stop
-Read the sentence back to check it makes sense before moving onto the next
Objective: w.40.7 Uses some clearly identifiable letters to communicate meaning, representing some sounds correctly and in sequence.
w.ELG.2 They also write some irregular common words.
Maths State to your child what halving means: To divide into two equal parts.
Give your child playdough - demonstrate creating different shapes and cutting them in half – ensuring that both halves are the same. If they
get the hang of this quickly move onto cutting into quarters.

Discussion
point
Listen to the Story of Farmer Duck on YouTube and discuss with your child what happened in the story.
Discuss with your child the actions of the farmer.
Discuss whether it was right for the farmer to stay in bed all day while the duck carried out all the work?
Discuss how the duck felt when the farmer was being lazy and what clues they can find in the story to support this ideas e.g. it says in the text
that the duck was weepy.
Discuss the consequences of not sharing out the workload – on the duck and the farmer.
Objective: mfb.ELG.1 Children talk about how they and others show feelings, talk about their own and others’ behaviour, and its
consequences, and know that some behaviour is unacceptable.

Story time -Discuss the unfamiliar vocab they might find in the story and what each word means:
Weepy – tearful; inclined to cry.
Crept - to move slowly and carefully in order to avoid being heard or noticed.
Stole – to move, go, or come secretly, quietly, or unobserved:
Fled – run away from a place or situation of danger.
Wearily - with extreme tiredness.

Maths State that not only can objects be halved but quantities can too. Ask your child what halving means?
Show your child some coins, sweets, or pieces of fruit (choose only one item and ensure there are an equal number of objects e.g. 2, 4,
6, 8, 10). Place two soft toys or action figures in front of them.
Demonstrate counting the objects and then sharing the coins, sweets or fruit between the two.
Ensure that you show your child it needs to be one for toy 1, one for toy 2, one for toy 1 and one for toy 2…until all the objects have been
shared out equally. Ask your child is it fair? Do both toys have the same amount of objects?
Ask your child to count the objects to check and correct any misconceptions. To challenge your child further have more than two toys for
the coins, sweets or fruit to be shared between.

When setting the dinner table give your child enough place mat, plates, knives, forks and cups for each
person who will be eating dinner. Ask them to set the table and share out the objects.
If you want to challenge your child further give them too many of one item or not enough and see if
they can tell you your mistake.

important bits of information e.g. how many objects are to be halved and
any questions that require answering e.g., How many were eaten and how
many were left?
Where possible use the objects that are in the word problem e.g. buns. If
these objects are not available use objects to represent them or draw
pictures of the objects.

Can you create an observation square?
Create a simple square out of an old photo frame, string or out of 4
sticks. Where possible fix the sides of the observation square down
firmly as they will need to be in place for several weeks. Record
what is currently in the square either by drawing it or taking a
photo on a mobile phone. Over the next few weeks continue to

plants appear and disappear. The life cycle of a plant - grow,
reproduce i.e. produce seeds/fruit, die, decay, a new plant grow the

changes.
Story time Ask your child to use some of their own toys to act out the story.
If they do not have a ladybird or a cow use other toys or objects to
represent them e.g. a plastic milk bottle could be the cow and a pop
bottle lid could be the ladybird.
Objective: r.40.6 Uses vocabulary and forms of speech that
are increasingly influenced by their experiences of books.

groups.

how many objects are to be shared, number of parts to be shared into and any questions that require
answering e.g. How many carrots will each rabbit have?
Where possible use the objects that are in the word problem e.g. carrots. If these objects are not
available use objects to represent them or draw pictures of the objects.

Active
learning
Children are to create their very own obstacle course, they could make the obstacle course
indoors or outdoors – weather depending.
Children could you use their toys and everyday objects found in and around your home.
Encourage your child to create obstacles, which they have to go over, under around and through.
Encourage your child to check that their obstacle course is safe before completing. If they find
pat of the course to be unsafe ask them to adapt and change it.
Objective: mh.40.4 Travels with confidence and skill around, under, over and through
balancing and climbing equipment.
