Air Sealing – Sealingthe “envelope” of yourhome (outer walls, ceil-ing, doors, windows andfloors) is often the mostcost effective way to im-prove the energy effi-ciency and comfort ofyour home. ENERGYSTAR® estimates thata skilled contractor orknowledgeable home-owner can save up to 20percent on heating andcooling cost or 10 per-cent of the total energybill for the home by airsealing. Air sealing willhelp block heat loss inthe winter and heatgain in the summer.Typical air sealing op-portunities in mosthomes revolve around:caulking at the base-board/subfloor level,caulking HVAC regis-ters at the floor/ceiling,using mastic to seal allduct work, and air seal-ing around doors andwindows.
Insulating – Insula-tion keeps a homewarm in the winter andcool in the summer.Several types of insula-tion are available de-pending on theapplication. When
looking at insulationhomeowners have op-tions such as: fiber-glass, cellulose, rigidfoam board, and sprayfoams. When thinkingof insulating, it is im-portant to understandthat insulation per-formance is measuredby R-value. R-value isthe ability to resist heatflow. The higher the R-value the more insulat-ing power. In climatezone 4 (Kentucky) it isrecommended that floorspaces be insulatedwith R-25/30, walls beinsulated with R-19,and attic spaces to beinsulated with R-38/60.
Insulation works bestwhen air is not movingthrough or around it, soit is very important toseal air leaks before in-stalling insulation.
Sealing Ducts – Inhouses with forced-airheating and cooling sys-tems, ducts are used todistribute conditionedair throughout thehouse. In a typicalhouse, about 20 percentof the air that movesthrough the duct sys-tem is lost due to leaksand poorly sealed con-nections. The result ishigher utility bills anddifficulty keeping thehouse comfortable. Be-
cause of the location ofsome duct work, repair-ing or sealing themcould be very difficult.However, exposed ductsin the attic, basements,crawlspaces, andgarages can be repairedby sealing the leakswith duct sealant typi-cally called mastic.
Many other renova-tions are possible suchas replacement door,windows, siding, roof-ing, etc… but air seal-ing, insulating and ductsealing are typically en-ergy improvements that
