o better prepare itsel against uture fooding due tohigh river levels, the own o Minnedosa has set orthto construct a permanent diking system that will run thelength o the riverbank, rom M&M Autobody to the GolCourse.

Work has already been done on the riverbank nearM&M Autobody, the Provincial Building and own yard.Tis dike will be a permanent structure the own plans toimprove upon. own crews have diked behind the mobilehome subdivision along the river, and the only thing thatremains is or it to be grassed over. Plans are also in the

works to permanently dike the river bank downriver romthe Heritage Village where it has the potential to impacthomes. Work will be completed by the own and com-munity contractors.

A nal tally o this years expenses has not been cal-culated yet and some o the work was done outside o thebudget because it was an emergency situation. For theown O ce alone, damage ranging rom the loss and re-covery o documents to having to place weeping tile anddealing with sewer backup is estimated anywhere up to$160,000.

In the uture, work will depend on how much theown decides it can aord to do at any one time, althoughown CAO Ken Jenkins assures that there will be a certainamount o work done each year. Rather than being reac-tive, wed like to consider ourselves to be a little more pro-active. It could be 10, 15 years beore we see this kind oevent again; but theres no guarantee. I it happens againin the next couple o years we want to be more prepared.

Te spring o 2011 was one o the wettest Minnedo-sa residents have witnessed in years. High water tables, paired with excessive rainalls and a rapid snowmeltactored together to create a stressul ew months orbusinesses and homeowners. It had a serious nega-tive impact, Jenkins agreed. Its upsetting and costlyto homeowners and businesses. Jenkins is condentthat the permanent dikes will denitely help preventriver fooding, but says theres not much we can doabout rainall. Living in a valley, there is always the riskthat fooding could come rom any and all directions.Teres no doubt its a very beautiul setting, but it doespresent its challenges.
