Animal attractionWhy do animal stories get moretraction than human suffering?
By Adam BelzThe Gazette
So theres this dog namedPuddles. Maybe youveheard of her.
Her owners are floodvictims from Rompot,
and in March the dog was hit bya car.
Puddles had surgery at a vet-
erinary specialist in Des Moines:a steel plate and seven screws inher leg, 75 staples near her neck, vet bills of more than $3,000 and aseries of appointments coming up.
Flood Them with Love, a localcharity whose primary goal is tohelp flood victims, asked for dona-tions for the dogs medical care.Animal lovers from coast to coastresponded with get-well cards, gifts and donations that morethan covered the expenses.
It was very encouraging onone hand, but it wasa little dishearteningon the other hand, that it was easier toraise money for aninjured animal thanit was to raise money
for 18,000 flood vic-tims, said KarlaGoettel, founder ofFlood Them withLove.
Animals and theirsuffering get a lotof attention in America today. InEastern Iowa, it often seems likehuman problems the grind-ing, complicated aftermath of theflood, distant humanitarian crises
Efforts are under way to preserve the smokestack at the old Sinclair
meatpacking plant site because of its historical significance. But howdoes it stack up with the rest of the downtown Cedar Rapids skyline?
