From the Principal’s Desk A GREAT INITIATIVE Earlier this year, a number of our senior boys expressed an interest in forming a group to pursue their own personal Bible study and learn how to prepare and give a presentation or talk. Under the guidance of Bro Evan Franco and other mentors inside and outside the College, these students have been steadily working on their chosen studies. This term, we have scheduled them to each make a presentation at the Secondary assemblies. Last week, Josh Kempster spoke about the amazing physical properties of light, and how light is used to describe God and his character. Angus Weller focussed on Daniel’s prayer and in particular his use of the phrase “kingdom, power and glory”. Seth Hall chose God’s name, Yahweh, as his topic and outlined its importance and meaning. This week, Micah Steele drew our attention to the incredible nature of the stars and how they are used as a symbol of the saints in glory. Matt Williams and Jordan Singh jointly explained each facet of the class theme chosen by the Year 12s – “Love the Word. Live for God. Learn together.” All these young men have done a great job and have challenged, encouraged and “built up” their peers as well as their teachers. We are looking forward to more of these Bible focussed presentations in the weeks ahead. Thanks, boys! In the next couple of newsletters, we will print summaries of their talks. SCIENCE & ENGINEERING CHALLENGE Each year, the University of Newcastle coordinates Science & Engineering Challenges for Year 9-10 students around Australia. Schools elect to form a team and compete against other schools in a series of very challenging activities involving construction, problem- solving and team work. Our Year 10s recently competed against 8 schools in the Regional Challenge and won it! Not only that, they have now been selected to compete in the State final known as the Super Challenge on 27 August. GENERAL NEWS

Friday 16 August 2013 God willing

Our inaugural Multicultural Day is next Friday! We would love to see every Primary student dressed in a costume that represents a country in some form – eg colours of a flag, an animal, traditional dress or an icon. Parents are welcome to dress up too!

A big thank you to those parents who have offered to provide food for the food tasting. We are still looking for some more food tasting options and also for volunteers to help with serving on the day—please email sis Judy Bailye: [email protected]. A note will be sent home soon to confirm your contribution.

The program for this exciting event is planned as follows:

9:30 am Parade of all Primary classes in the gym

10:30 am Food tasting from a variety of continents

11:30 am - 12:15 pm African Drumming Performance in the gym

1:00 pm Aussie Sausage Sizzle available for purchase (more details in P&F section page 10)

Secondary students will be able to participate in the food tasting at their normal recess time. We look forward to seeing you all there for this exciting event!

BUSES We remind all parents that the Hills (Uncle Paul) and Southern (Uncle Frank) buses are full and generally will not be able to take extra passengers. If there is a particular need to travel on one of those buses, please contact the College to see if it is possible.

Thank you to all those who have made enquiries this term and have understood the need to ensure the safety of our children by not overcrowding the buses. COLLEGE PHOTO DAY

Heritage College’s photo day is scheduled for Monday 16th September. Please note that photo day is being held on a Monday this year and put a special reminder in your diaries now. Full winter uniform is required to be worn (this includes the school woollen jumper) for all students from Years 1-12. The Reception class is to

be dressed in correct sports uniform. Mark Duncan, from Duncan Images, will be photographing the College this year. If you are interested in viewing Mark’s website, it is: www.duncanimages.com.au. Order envelopes will be sent home once we receive them. ICAS SCIENCE COMPETITION RESULTS Congratulations to the following students for their great performance in the recent ICAS Science Competition:

PRIMARY NEWS

Page 6: From the Principal’s Desk SPIRITUAL THEMEheritage.sa.edu.au/docs/Newsletter-13T3N1a.pdfFrom the Principal’s Desk A GREAT INITIATIVE Earlier this year, a number of our senior boys

Heritage College Primary students had two special visitors from the USA on Tuesday 6th August. The presenter, Gary, and ‘NED’ travel around the world to talk to students about how to do their best at school. Using yo-yo tricks, a little bit of illusion and lots of humour, Gary and NED taught us about three important lessons:

N ever give up

E ncourage others

D o your best Some of the yo-yo tricks Gary performed were amazing and included a roller coaster, the Eiffel Tower and a trapeze artist – they had to be seen to be believed! Several students were able to talk with Gary one-on-one and Danny Kim’s commitment to always trying his best won him a yo-yo and special holder – and he got to wear a balloon champion’s hat!

NED’s message can be summed up in a poem:

Never give up! You know it’s right Keep on going and You’ll shine bright.

Encourage others! That’s the way You make people feel great By the words you say.

Do your best! Give it all you’ve got Never hold back Because you’ve got a lot.

YEAR 8 BIBLE STUDY Year 8 students have produced a range of interesting and informative posters during their Bible study sessions recently. Many used a 3D effect to create a greater impact and diversity to the usual presentation of material which has made them extra interesting and even fun to look at—well done!

PAGE 7

SECONDARY NEWS YEAR 8 GEOGRAPHY Students in Geography 8 have been studying landforms and landmasses. Instead of simply making flashcards and memorising the characteristics of each, they were asked to classify them into one of nine categories. There were many cases in which the landform or landmass could fit into more than one category and so students charted such cases and recorded their reasoning as to why they'd put the landform in one category instead of another. As you can imagine, this sparked enormous conversation and debate!

Next, students were challenged to create any additional categories that would help their sorting. This caused them to re-evaluate their original ideas and to further understand the differences and nuances of each item. When they were finally assessed on their understanding of the fundamentals of all 51 landscapes / landforms, every student in the class demonstrated mastery at the A level! Great work Year 8 students.

YEAR 10 SCIENCE & ENGINEERING CHALLENGE We won! What an exciting day for us all. The students had a fantastic day, mixed with both frustrating and exhilarating experiences. The fact that we won was great, but the best part of the day was the way our students behaved— cheering for everyone, cleaning up willingly and certainly the best behaved at the venue.

SECONDARY STUDENTS—AFTER SCHOOL TUTORING

Heritage College is continuing the tutoring program commenced in Term 2 that offers after school assistance for students with needs in specific areas in Secondary. On Thursdays from 3:30-4:30pm a number of teachers have

PAGE 9

SECONDARY NEWS volunteered their time to provide tutoring one-on-one, or to a small group where specific needs have been identified. Please contact Bro Tim Badger for further information or to request to be part of this program via email: [email protected]. STUDY & CAREER EVENT

An important information evening will be held in a few weeks (on Thursday 29th August at 7:30pm) to provide parents of current Year 10-12

students with information about the SACE and post-school study and career options. We have arranged for representatives from the 3 local universities as well as from an Apprenticeships agency to be present on the night to speak with students and parents about choices after school.

There will be two sections to the evening, with two different sessions running in each. Parents and students can choose which they would like to attend. If your son / daughter is continuing to Year 11 or Year 12 next year, or considering further study through TAFE or University, it is most important that you attend this evening. There will be ample opportunity for discussion and questions during the sessions. SACE COURSE COUNSELLING

On the same evening as the Study and Career Event (Thursday, August 29th at 7:30pm), we will be holding a parent session on subject selection for the SACE.

Parents, particularly of Year 10 students, are encouraged to attend this event. There will also be opportunity after this session to speak with representatives from the local tertiary institutions at the Career Event. UNIVERSITY OPEN DAYS

All of South Australia’s universities will conduct an Open Day on Sunday 18th August. Senior students will be given information brochures and further details can be obtained from the university websites as follows:

We are happy to wrap these up and sell them to the students for between $2 and $10 when we hold the stall on Friday 30 August.

The students love to go ‘shopping’ all by themselves for a specially chosen gift and it's lovely to see their joy in giving back to the dads they love so much! MULTICULTURAL DAY LUNCH For our Multicultural Day on Friday 16 August a true-blue Aussie BBQ lunch will be provided by the P&F Committee. The following items will be for sale to all students:

Sausage Sandwich $1.50
