Page 1 Edition 23 – November 2013 FROM THE PREZ Another successful season has past and despite many challenges the club finished the season with a significant increase in players and new families. We have a proud tradition of succession at committee level and I would like to take this opportunity to thank long serving committee members for their contributions to the football club and the community over several years. I would like to offer special thanks to Andrew Warden, our former President. Andrew has continued with a significant amount of the committee workload after stepping down as President, and has gone above and beyond to help in my transition into this challenging role. As with so many of our committee, Andrew has offered his continuing support into the future, but we are actively seeking committee level, team involvement from all age groups within the club. This is the most successful formula for continuity and longevity that has been the hallmark of the Magpies Juniors for many years. The new facilities of our senior club at “The Nest” in Kippax will help integrate involvement between the juniors and seniors. For the first time in many years our juniors can go to a local ground and see the highest quality senior football in Canberra, within walking distance or a short drive. Our senior club, and its players will continue to promote the relationship and give our juniors a first hand regular example of what many of our players will be working towards. FROM THE PREZ (cont…) Looking forward to next season we have a number of significant projects in the pipeline to ensure the facilities for the club and the families we represent are enhanced to maximise the positive experience for all involved in the club. The centrepiece of this project is new permanent storage and meeting area at the Kippax sportsground to enable more functional game day management at the ground, provide facilities for parents to have shelter and somewhere to catch up for a cup of coffee with others while their kids are training, and allow key pieces of equipment and supplies to be stored safely for events and canteen commitments. We are also looking to add to our merchandise with additions like a club “hoodie” to encourage and promote the Magpies throughout the West Belconnen region. We will continue to improve our Auskick program, to make our great game more accessible and enjoyable for children and their families seeking a truly community focussed club. While the year ahead is sure to be busy and full of new twists and turns, we look forward to involvement from as many families as possible to drive the success and shape the future of our great club. SEASON WRAP UP The Magpies Juniors number one objective is to increase participation while providing a safe and friendly environment for children to play football. 2013 saw a 21 per cent increase in registration numbers. This year we welcomed 66 new Magpies and continued to enjoy good retention rates for existing players. In addition we welcomed 36 players from the Belconnen Cats Junior Football Club into our senior ranks, taking our numbers to 246 players in 12 teams across nine age groups. Auskick Rookie numbers continued to be strong and enthusiasm was high. We had two new coaches this year and we thank Will and Kieran for their efforts. We also thank Lachlan , Isaac , Hamish and Kyle for taking the time to help out on Sundays after playing their own games on Saturday.

We had two teams in the Under 8s, Under 9s and Under 10s. While we started with two teams in the U14s it soon became apparent that this was unsustainable, resulting in the two Under 14 teams merging. All Magpies Juniors played the game in the right spirit. A number of our boys also showed the club spirit by helping other teams out with umpiring, running messages and water as well as canteen duties.

SEASON WRAP UP (cont…)

The Canberra Junior Football League made several changes to the competition in 2013 that created many challenges for the Magpies. Double age progression was abolished (except for the Under 17s), the Under 12, Under 13 and Under 14 competitions had a pooled system of finals, and the Under 11s became a competitive age group and saw the early introduction of a number of rules. This year saw the Under 14s up against Eastlake for the second year in a row in the Pool A Grand Final. The boys put up a valiant effort but fell just eight points short. Congratulations also go to the Under 13s for making the Pool B Grand Final and the Under 12s for making it to the Pool B Preliminary Final. A fantastic effort by all players and coaches involved. My hat goes off to our hard working volunteers. The passion of our coaches and managers, the dedication of our Life Members, in particular Norm Sims and Ian Coate , and stoic determination my fellow committee members never cease to amaze me and I thank you for the work that you have done for OUR club and the support you have given me over the last three years. Andrew Warden Former President and Committee Member Magpies Junior Football Club

SUMMER BREAK

During the off-season, there’s no reason why the kids should put away their AFL balls!! To all our parents, please encourage the kids to get a ball in their hands over the summer. Even five to ten minutes a day can make a huge difference in ball reading and ball skills and help to set the scene for an amazing season in 2014!

CAN YOU HELP?

There will be a lot going on with the MJFC over the summer break. We are currently looking at a project that will replace the shipping containers that we currently use for storage with a proper shed. This will provide better facilities for our parents, storage of merchandise, equipment and stock for our canteen. We will also be looking at the merchandise we stock, with the introduction of MJFC hoodies for the kids for next season. Is there something that you can contribute to our new shed? Please contact us at the following email: [email protected]

FIND US ON FACEBOOK The MJFC has a facebook page. Search for Magpies Juniors to find us. We will use this to keep you informed of what's going on around the club. Send us a friendship request now!
