Polish up your shoes and get dressed to the nines, it’s time to dance! The Glenn Miller Orchestra brings its world-famous sound to Sun City for a fabulous night of entertainment.

Sundial Auditorium is the setting for this special one-night-only dance event on Monday, February 28. Doors open at 5:30pm and the dancing kicks off at 6:30pm. Tickets go on sale at 7:30am Tuesday, January 4 in the Clubs & Activities Office at Lakeview Cen-ter. Tables of eight and four are $25 per person (closer to the dance floor). Tables of six are $20 per person. If you have friends who want to sit together, we can accommodate this at the time tickets are purchased – no seats will be held.

A cash bar will be available (beer and wine only) and non-alcoholic bev-erages will also be available for pur-chase. No outside beverages allowed. Business casual attire (no shorts or jeans) is suggested. Get “In the Mood” and attend – you’ll be glad you did!

The legendary Glenn Miller was one of the most successful of all the dance bandleaders back in the swing era of the 1930s and ‘40s. A matchless string of hit records, the constant impact of radio broadcasts, and the drawing power at theatres, hotels and dance pavilions built and sustained the

momentum of popularity.Glenn disbanded his musical orga-

nization in 1942, at the height of its popularity, volunteered for the Army and then organized and led the famous Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band. It went to Europe to entertain service-men, and then, on December 15, 1944, Maj. Miller took off in a single-engine plane from England to precede his band to France, never to be seen again. The army declared him officially dead a year later.

Due to the popular demand, the Miller Estate organized the formation of the present Glenn Miller Orchestra in 1956 under the direction of drum-mer Ray McKinley, who had become the unofficial leader of the Army Air Force Band after Glenn’s disappear-ance. Since then, other leaders have followed. Gary Tole is the next leader and director of the world-famous Glenn Miller Orchestra.

Now, over 55 years since the public first embraced the successful Miller sound, both the legend and the music live on. The Glenn Miller Orchestra is the most sought after big band in the world today for both concert and dance engagements. Still considered the greatest band of all time, its unique sound is loved by almost anybody who cares to dance.

Velda Jacobs loves the game of golf. She plays three times a week and spends extra hours on her chip shots and drives. Velda knows mus-cle strength is necessary to execute proper golf mechanics. She decided to do something about increasing her muscle strength and overall level of fitness. With the help of a personal trainer, Velda began a comprehensive exercise program at the Bell Fitness Center. Velda discovered that exercise not only improved her golf game, but her quality of life as well.

“Your body dictates your golfing ability,” states Jane Fortier, Daily Fit-ness personal trainer. “To improve your swing speed, power and accu-racy, you need to improve the body that executes the swing. This can be done through an exercise program that focuses on three important areas: Aerobic Capacity, Muscle Strength, and Body Flexibility. Aerobic exercise will improve stamina & endurance, vital to completing 18 holes of golf; Weight Training will strengthen and build muscle tissue, key to gaining club head speed; and Stretching Exer-

cises will improve range of motion and flexibility, essential for a powerful and fluid swing.”

Daily Fitness trainers specialize in teaching individuals how to exercise safely and effectively. They tailor pro-grams to fit clients’ needs and goals. To find out more about personal train-ing services, call 623-256-7901, or visit www.DailyFitnessLLC.com.

Get Golf Ready in the New Year

You may wonder why we spray so much fertilizer in the winter time than we do in the summer time; or you may have asked this question or been asked this question: What are the blue dots or pile on the fairways or greens? To answer the first question, in the

soil there are microbes that break down the fertilizer in the soil. In the summer time the microbes run ram-pant because it is warm. In the winter time, when it is cold, the microbes slow down to almost a standstill and very little activity takes place. For this reason we apply what is

called a foliar fertilizer. This type of fertilizer is taken up through the leaves on the plant and the plant is able to use the fertilizer more rapidly than if we applied granular fertilizer in the soil. We apply liquid fertilizer to the

greens every two weeks during the winter time. We use four different products in the winter time on the greens.

We apply liquid fertilizer to the fair-ways, tees, and green banks every two weeks, as well. We use two different products on these areas. The term for this type of fertilizer

program is called “spoon feeding.” We do not put down more than a quarter-pound of nitrogen fertilizer per 1,000 square feet per application. This keeps the rye grass healthy and does not pro-mote excessive growth. Now for the blue spots or piles, they

are a marking system for our sprayer. The blue stuff is foam that marks the boundary of the sprayer so when we turn around we know where we have sprayed and we do not re-spray areas. This avoids over application of fertil-izer. The foam does not have fertilizer in it and will melt as the sun hits it. It will take longer to break down in the winter time due to the cold so we add a blue dye to the foam so you can see your white golf balls.

Why we spray and those blue dotsSign up for April ShowersIt’s not too early to sign up for the April Showers. Entry forms will be out on February 1. The horse race banquet will be held on Thursday, March 31. Golf will be played on April 1 and 2. All entries must be in by March 20. First come, first served. Don’t miss out.

The essence of music has been deeply rooted in this Italian from New Jersey. At the age of 7, the sounds of the sum-mer winds drifted off the Jersey shores into Guy’s spirit and soul. Guy’s inspi-ration came from his mother, a devoted Sinatra fan.

One evening Guy and his wife attended a wedding reception. During the reception, Guy’s wife persuaded him to sing a song for the couple. Shyly, Guy went up on stage and sang a classic rendition of “Summer Wind.” One song turned into two, two into three and before he knew it, Guy had sung seven songs for the wedded

couple and their guests. Excited about the response from the audience at the wedding and the discovery of his own vocals, Guy and his wife set out to sing at the karaoke bars on Saturday nights.

Stardom soon struck. Guy went on to audition for Dick Clark’s “Your Big Break” on UPN and chosen as a finalist! This was a chance to be seen and heard on national television as a Sinatra sound-a-like. The Dick Clark production staff, amazed by his voice, called Guy eight days later to arrange taping at NBC Studio One in Burbank and aired Guy’s spot singing Sinatra on February 26, 2000.

More opportunities came knocking, Guy performed at a private affair for Phoenix, Arizona’s top radio talent, Beth McDonald. Once again, Guy was enthralled by the positive response and enthusiastic fans. He decided that night singing was his calling. He soon began booking gigs at private parties and corporate functions.

Not long after his big break, Guy had

invitations to perform live on radio at several local stations. In the meantime, he met Joni Sledge from Sister Sledge, who took his demo CD to Jimmy Car-lin, owner of the Velvet Room. Jimmy was so impressed with Guy’s stage presence and vocals, he booked Guy on the spot to sing Sinatra songs at his club.

Recently, Guy joined forces with some of Arizona’s top talent and cre-ated Guy Pennacchio and the Sum-merwind. The band includes, Barbara Catlin, piano and arrangements, Jerry Donato, soprano and tenor saxophone; Dwight Kilian, acoustic bass and Dom Moio on drums.

RCSC Cancellation Policy: no cancel-lations. The Clubs and Activities Office will try to re-sell your ticket if there is a wait-list or you may sell it and provide us with the name of the person replac-ing you. Mark your calendar and plan to attend the Sinatra sound-a-like. You too, will agree the performance is a wonderful tribute to Frank Sinatra!

At the club’s annual Christmas party club President Jo Hanson (right) and Vice President Claire Wright were rein-stated for another year as club Presi-dent and Vice President respectively. The party also celebrated another suc-cessful year of meeting the needs of the many charitable organizations the club serves. The success is attributed to the many generous people who donated yarn, we thank you all, we couldn’t have met the needs without you, you have been a part of our team.

Members can also work on their own projects, knitting, crocheting, beading, cards, plastic canvas and more. If you

are new to crafts, members are happy to get you started on your choice of interest.

We welcome RCSC cardholders. The club meets Mondays and Thursday 8am to 1pm. For further information call 623-933-7775.

Another new year and another year that our soldiers are fighting on for-eign soil. We at Fairway Knitters and Crochet Club like to do our part in supporting our troops. So we knit slip-pers and helmet liners to send over-seas to our soldiers stationed in cold climates. We also knit and crochet lap robes for the VA hospitals. Would you like to join us in this worthy endeavor? We would love to have you. Our club already has the yarn. We just need your talents in knit and crochet. Speaking of yarn, though, we are in need of 100%

wool yarn for the helmet liners. Do you have any 100% wool yarn that you aren’t using? We take yarn donations and the soldiers will benefit from it.

On December 21, a playoff deter-mined the Bocce Super Tournament winner. From left, John Truitt, Mike McEnery, Russ Larson, Keith Clark, Frank Farrell, Pat Pourchez, Jane Pratt and Richard Sheridan all vied for that top spot. The winner was Jane Pratt. Following respectively were John Truitt, Russ Larson and Keith Clark. Participants were determined by accu-mulated highest scores for the mid-September through mid-December monthly tournaments. A new contest started in January.

During our December food drive, culminating at our December 13 Christmas party, our caring members donated over 200 pounds of non-per-ishables for the St. Mary’s Food Bank.

If you enjoy play-ing cards, chances are you will enjoy playing Mah-Jongg as well. It is a fun and entertaining game that uses tiles, instead of cards. We are also open from 4:30 to 7:30pm on Tuesday and Wednesday to work on jewelry.

Our new president, Bill Larson, has gotten a good start on the new year by delegating a lot of responsibility to other members of the club. Our next general meeting will be our regular

lunch potluck on the third Monday of the month, February 21.

If you ever thought about lapidary work (cutting and polishing semi-precious and/or precious stones), glass fusion, or metal jewelry work, come by and see what it is all about. We can give visitors tours whenever we are open, and we love to talk about our hobby. There are classes available for members in lapidary work, glass fusion, wire wrapping, basic silver-smithing and metal casting (silver, gold & bronze) for jewelry.

There may be more than one royal wedding this year! Unlike Prince Wil-liam, however, 15th Century Prince Dauntless (Ken Love) can’t choose his own bride. A dozen princesses strive to be royal enough for him in “Once upon a Mattress” - the musical to be staged by The Sun City Players Com-munity Theater the first two weekends in March. Bunny Sherman directs and Gloria Russell is music director.

This is the first of three Players’ pro-ductions in 2011 at Mountain View Auditorium in their Golden Anniver-sary Year and a reception will be held prior to the March 4 opening night per-formance to usher in the gala season.

“Mattress,” with book by Mary Rodgers and lyrics by Marshall Barer, launched the career of Carol Burnette. Performances are at 2pm March 6, 10 and 13 and at 7pm March 4, 5, 11 and 12. $10 reserved seats will be sold from

10am to 1pm Monday through Friday beginning February 28 in the Sundial lobby and one hour before each per-formance at Mountain View. No phone reservations or credit cards, please.

More information is on website: http://suncityplayerscommunitythe-ater.org.

Thinking of “taking it easy” as you grow older? Think again! Surely you know that extended periods of sitting lead to muscles shortening, tightening and weakening. Lack of weight-bear-ing activity contributes to osteoporo-sis. Lack of movement and stretching leads to joint deterioration and loss of flexibility.

If that isn’t enough, what about los-ing your balance and falling? Yikes! It can happen easily when you’re not challenging your balance in various positions and not building bone and muscle strength.

The solution? Yoga can alleviate or reduce many of these health chal-

lenges, making it an ideal exercise choice for those of us in the older adult population.

The Hatha Yoga Club offers classes for all levels of yoga practitioners – beginner to more advanced. Class times and locations are listed on Page 21. For more information, see our bro-chure on the window of the Sundial Aerobics Room. To attend bring a yoga mat and a small blanket along with your RCSC card, $5 for club member-ship and $3 for each class. Arrive no later than 15 minutes before class to register. Come on an empty stomach in loose clothing and join us soon!

Book SaleIf the numbers seven and 11 are

lucky for you then the week of Febru-ary 7 is your lucky time. The Books Around the Corner bookstore is hav-ing a really great STOREWIDE sale. Everything – EVERYTHING – is on sale at half price or less. Well, as usual I have made a liar out of myself. There is an exception to “everything.” The collectibles are not going on sale. But all the other books are.

Now is the time to stock up. After all, there is still some winter ahead of us and no one wants to be caught without enough reading material.

Annual MeetingThe Friends of the Sun City Library

will hold its annual meeting on Feb-ruary 10 at 9:30am. As usual, we will meet in the Program Room of the Bell branch of the Maricopa County

Library. Come and bring a friend. If you have any suggestions for vis-

iting authors or other items that is the time and place to ring them up. Any new ideas for book store events are always welcome. Even if you have a complaint, come anyway.

Homebound DeliveriesThere have been several folks signed

up for the homebound delivery and pickup. If you or someone you know is in need of this service please drop in to the bookstore or call us at 602-651-2014. Someone will contact you with the details.

Volunteer of the Month This month our tribute to the Vol-

unteer of the Month is also a farewell. Eleanor Szubka has lived in Sun City for 24 years.

After the death of her husband 14

years ago, she became a library vol-unteer and worked in the circulation area on Tuesday mornings. After the library change over, she continued with her Tuesday mornings in the bookstore. Always a lover of books, she has fond memories of her home town library located on the second floor of a park building. Not exactly the public library we think of today. Even so, she won many ribbons for her participation in summer reading programs.

Eleanor is fortunate enough to have a daughter, Dianne, two grandchil-dren and two great grandchildren with whom she spent the recent holi-days in Illinois.

In all the years she has worked in the library she has relied on loyal friends and church transportation services to get her there. She even walked when no other option was available. That’s

dedication. Those of us who know her person-

ally will miss her faithful help, cheer-ful personality and good nature. We wish her well in her new home and hope that she will have the opportu-nity to drop in and visit. As Lawrence Welk would say, “Auf Wiederschein” or “Hasta la Vista, baby,” or “see you around,” but not good-bye.

Past Tense The Christmas tree is down and the

decorations are put away for another year.

But we would like to express our appreciation to all of the wonderfully talented volunteers who contributed to the success of this endeavor; and to all the equally wonderful patrons who purchased their work and made the 2010 holiday season such a great one.

to exercise the duty of care and the duty of undivided loyalty.

The RCSC Board of Director’s legal authority is found in the Arizona Revised Statutes – Title 10, RCSC’s Restated Articles of Incorporation and RCSC’s Corporate Bylaws. The busi-ness judgment rule asserts if a board has exercised reasonable business judg-ment in making a decision, the board is not consider negligent in its fiduciary duty. A board is not liable if they have practiced the business judgment rule even if the decision turns out to have been a poor one.

Under the duty of care, the RCSC Board of Directors is expected to act in accordance with both the law and RCSC’s Corporate Documents, and to use the care and skill that a prudent per-son would use in similar circumstances. Undivided loyalty is the most stringent duty the law imposes on a board. To exercise a board’s duty of undivided loyalty, the board should avoid conflicts of interest, which occur when a board member permits self-interest to inter-fere with their duty to the corporation.

The RCSC Board of Directors takes

their role and duties very seriously. We want input from the Members and we want to keep Members informed. As a Member of RCSC you have a responsi-bility to participate in the governance of RCSC. We invite Members to attend the Board/Member Exchange meetings generally held on the first and third Monday of each month at the Lakev-iew Recreation Center in Social Hall #3 at 9am. This is a time when Board and Members can exchange ideas, sugges-tions, information and concerns. Mem-bers can have a dialogue with the Board as it is informal and interactive. Mem-bers should bring to this meeting any-thing they want the Board to consider or change. No decisions are made at this meeting, it is simply an exchange. We also encourage you to send us your comments, concerns or input via email [email protected] or via letter to 10626 W Thunderbird Blvd, Sun City AZ 85351. We also ask that you sign up on our email list at www.sunaz.com so that you can be kept informed regularly.

With your support I look forward to a very productive and successful 2011 for the RCSC Board of Directors!
