NOSTALGIA-ST. PHILIP & HOLY ROSARY CENTENNIAL-1987

For our Centennial Project in 1987, we constructed the ramp. While

reviewing the file recently in order to carry out some remedial work by

the building committee, the following interesting items were noted:

1) The two day celebration included the blessing of the ramp, Mass

celebrated by Bishop Sherlock, St. Philip's 25 voice choir, parade and

dance at Victoria Hall,

2) Fathers Les Horwath and Rick Dales were involved during 1987

3) The cost was $24,000 and no government funding was available.

Donors incl. Canadian Slovak League & Dr. Martin Stapleton in Florida.

4) There were 22 committee members who met monthly for 1 year

5) The architect was William Andrews and the contractor was Camille

Vandenberghe Concrete

6) The dedication by Bishop John Sherlock was on Sun., June 7, 1987

7) The original dedication of St. Philip's Church was by Bishop John

Walsh, the second bishop of the diocese of London on June 5, 1887. The

Advertiser Topic in its June 1887 edition reported: "Bishop Walsh

addressed the multitude for fully 1 hour and it was listened to with

marked attention throughout and rather than mutilate it, we will give it

verbatim in our next issue".

8) Included in the file was a list of 104 parishioners and their annual

assessment ranging from $2.00 to $20.00 per year during Father Philip

Gnam's tenure, (1886-1910) -Norm Sutherland (Past Chair)

From the Desk of Deacon Rudy

To the people of St. Philip's and Holy Rosary

parishes. I have left for New York City on Monday

June 19 for an extended holiday. I will be away for

about 2 months. I am driving Fr. Martin Nyland

there so he can receive treatment and a cure for his

Lyme disease. I will be looking after him and his

needs during his treatment there.

Regrets, I will not be available to perform my

diaconal duties within the parish during this time.

It is very important to me to help a friend in need.

I ask for your prayers that Fr. Nyland will regain his

health and I ask for your prayers for our safe

journey. My Blessings to you all,

Deacon Rudy Terpstra
