FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK:

I am still discovering treasures. You would think after all these years in the church and ministry I would have seen it all, but I have not. I am still discovering treasures. I have switched my personal devotion practice each morning. Because the devotion that is available in our sanctuary each Sunday is Our Daily Bread I now use that as a devotion that I read each day. I want to read what you are reading each day, discover what you discover. I want to hear how a certain verse or writing speaks to you and share how it speaks to me. I happen to like devotions that I can have on my iPad so I was thrilled when I discovered that Our Daily Bread is available as an app. I love the special features in that app like direct connection to the scripture text so I have the Bible right there. Each day also includes extra “Insight” into the text. At the bottom of the page are the suggested scriptures for reading the Bible in a year, another great practice. Last week as I was looking at the readings I saw how “short” one of the Psalm reading was. Psalm 117 was only two verses long. I thought to myself that has to be the shortest chapter in the Bible. A little bit of research revealed to me that it was. What a treasure. I also discovered it is a chapter that is right in the middle of the Bible. What a treasure.

Psalm 117 (New Living Translation)

Praise the Lord, all you nations.

Praise him, all you people of the earth.

for he loves us with unfailing love;

the Lord’s faithfulness endures forever.

Praise the Lord.

It is a prayer, it is a chapter you could memorize, and it is a treasure. I am also discovering other treasures at the Lisbon United Methodist Church. I met the Administrative Council and their families. What a treasure! This church is led by smart, dedicated and faithful people. I met many of the Sunday School teachers, another treasure. People dedicated to making sure our children had a chance to grow in faith. It is a lot of work and requires many sacrifices on behalf of the teachers and their families but they do it anyway. I also discovered that Lisbon UMC offers a Sunday School class for adults as well, still another treasure. I see people in church who love and care for one another. I see people who freely use their gifts to lift up one another and further the Kingdom of God, more treasures. Here are a couple of definitions for treasure from the dictionary.

Anything or person greatly valued or highly prized

To regard or treat as precious; cherish

Yep, the definition fits, treasures for sure. In the sixth chapter of Matthew Jesus warned his followers not to store up earthly treasures, but to store up heavenly treasures; “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:21) My storehouse for heavenly treasures is filling up. How about yours?

WIC -Women in Christ met on August 11, 2016 in the church library with ten members and one guest, our Shepherdess,Denise Anderberg, present. Bev Achey was the hostess and the roll call question was "If God had decided to send you to earth as an animal, which one would appeal to you most?" Our mission project was to bring a baby layette item for Bridgehaven. Sharon Headington has completed the contacts necessary for our meeting on September 8, when we will meet at the church at 10 AM to car pool to the Goodwill Day hab program in Marion for a guided tour at 10:30. A lunch stop at Cheddars afterwards is a good possibility. Our mission item for next month will be to return the baby bottles to the church on September 11, filled with money of one kind or another. We are hoping for a generous response from our church family. Marsha Heims led the lesson from the UMW Handbook on the subject of bullying as a form of persecution, and how difficult it is to recognize and stop it. Everyone was challenged to think about this problelm and it prompted a lively discussion. SCS – Ten ladies enjoyed great food and fellowship at Brown Bottle for our girls night out. In September we will be meeting on the 20th and beginning a new study book. Please join us for the new school year. Melissa is hostess and Denise is co-hotess.

We are looking forward to a great year of learning God’s word!!

The Adult Sunday School class will resume meeting at 8:30 AM on September 11 in fellowship hall with Nancy Forbes serving as the interim teacher. We will be using a Bible study guide for lay pupils and a lay teacher by Alan B. Stringfellow titled "Through the Bible in One Year". Iowa is often referred to as one of the "fly-over" states, and this study is like a "30,000 mile-high-fly-over". We will be looking at the major people and events in each book, but generally not doing a verse by verse examination of the text. We will work at our own pace and go as far as we get until we stop. God's Word is a precious gift and "thinking on these things" is a real blessing available to all. I would love for us to share our thoughts as we make this journey together. Prov. 27:17 "As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another."

NOTES OF THANKS! Thank you to Brittany McLaughlin, all the teachers and helpers at V BS this year. Thank you to Dick Budde for taking the role of Sunday School Superintendant!
