From the Parish Priest Dear Parishioners, Christmas is now fast approaching and our joyful expectation deepens by the day at the imminent celebration of our Saviour’s birth and His coming to us with the gifts of His grace and love.
Our Christmas Mass times have been well advertised in the parish. Christmas falls on a Sunday this year, so if you normally come to the 5:00pm Sunday Mass at Mary Immaculate church, please be aware that this regular Mass will not be celebrated next Sunday only. New Year’s Day will also be a Sunday this year and will be the Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God. This is Our Lady’s most exulted title that points to the divinity of her Son. Masses will be as usual that weekend with the addition of a Midnight Mass on New Year’s Eve in Mary Immaculate Church. This will be a Missa cantata in the Extraordinary Form. Please note that the Holy Hours at St Elizabeth’s Chapel on Thursdays and in Mary Immaculate church on Fridays go into recess after December 22 and 23 respectively until February 2nd and 3rd.
Also, the 9:00am Mary Immaculate Extraordinary Form Mass on Sunday will be a Low Mass with hymns after January 1st until January 29th.
Our Reflection for this week, on the coming of Christ, follows.
Fr Andrew Wise Preparing for Christ Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 522-524: The coming of God’s Son to earth is an event of such immensity that God willed to prepare for it over centuries. He makes everything converge on Christ: all the rituals and sacrifices, figures and symbols of the “First Covenant”. He announces him through the mouths of the prophets who succeeded one another in Israel. Moreover, he awakens in the hearts of the pagans a dim expectation of this coming.
St John the Baptist is the Lord’s immediate precursor or forerunner, sent to prepare his way. “Prophet of the Most High”, John surpasses all the prophets, of whom he is the last. He inaugurates the Gospel, already from his mother’s womb welcomes the coming of Christ, and rejoices in being “the friend of the bridegroom”, whom he points out as “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world”.
Going before Jesus “in the spirit and power of Elijah”, John bears witness to Christ in his preaching, by his Baptism of conversion, and through his martyrdom. When the Church celebrates the liturgy of Advent each year, she makes present this ancient expectancy of the Messiah, for by sharing in the long preparation for the Saviour’s first coming, the faithful renew their ardent desire for his second coming. By celebrating the precursor’s birth and martyrdom, the Church unites herself to his desire: “He must increase, but I must decrease.”

Living expenses for a child in
an orphanage
What price can we put on not
only keeping a child alive but
also ensuring that he or she
has a chance to thrive?
Chances are that we would be
willing to spend a lot more $48. However, that’s all it takes
with a contribution through Catholic Mission’s Life Giving Gifts
catalogue. Your gift will cover the cost of caring for one child in
an orphanage for one month, including accommodation, food,
medicines, proper sanitation and education. Visit
www.catholicmission.org.au/gifts to find out how your gift of
$48 can transform a life.
David McGovern, Director, Brisbane Archdiocese
Christmas Offering envelopes can be given on any collection plate or through the Parish Office any time over the next
few weeks. If you would like to make an offering, but do not have a printed envelope, please clearly mark a plain envelope

SUNDAY MASS READINGS
First Reading: Isaiah 7:10-14 The Lord spoke to Ahaz and said, `Ask the Lord your God for a sign for yourself coming either from the depths of Sheol or from the heights above.' `No,' Ahaz answered `I will not put the Lord to the test.' Then Isaiah said: `Listen now, House of David: are you not satisfied with trying the patience of men without trying the patience of my God, too? The Lord himself, therefore, will give you a sign. It is this: the maiden is with child and will soon give birth to a son whom she will call Emmanuel, a name which means "God-is-with-us.”'
The Word of the Lord
Response: Thanks be to God
Responsorial Psalm 23
(Said by all)
The Lord's is the earth and its fullness, the world and all its peoples. It is he who set it on the seas; on the waters he made it firm.
Who shall climb the mountain of the Lord? Who shall stand in his holy place? The man with clean hands and pure heart who desires not worthless things.
He shall receive blessings from the Lord and reward from the God who saves him. Such are the men who seek him, seek the face of the God of Jacob. Second Reading: Romans 1:1-7 From Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus who has been called to be an apostle, and specially chosen to preach the Good News that God promised long ago through his prophets in the scriptures. This news is about the Son of God who, according to the human nature he took, was a descendant of David: it is about Jesus Christ our Lord who, in the order of the spirit, the spirit of holiness that was in him, was proclaimed Son of God in all his power through his resurrection from the dead. Through him we received grace and our apostolic mission to preach the obedience of faith to all pagan nations in honour of his name. You are one of these nations, and by his call belong to Jesus Christ. To you all, then, who are God's beloved in Rome, called to be saints, may God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ send grace and peace. The Word of the Lord
Response: Thanks be to God
Gospel Acclamation:
Alleluia, alleluia! A virgin will give birth to a son; his name will be Emmanuel: God is with us. Alleluia!
Gospel: Matthew 1:18-24 This is how Jesus Christ came to be born. His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph; but before they came to live together she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a man of honour and wanting to spare her publicity, decided to divorce her informally. He had made up his mind to do this when the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, `Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because she has conceived what is in her by the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son and you must name him Jesus, because he is the one who is to save his people from their sins.' Now all this took place to fulfil the words spoken by the Lord through the prophet: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son and they will call him Emmanuel, a name which means `God-is-with-us'.
When Joseph woke up he did what the angel of the Lord had told him to do: he took his wife to his home.
The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Memorial Acclamation: Number Two
When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup, we proclaim your Death, O Lord, until you come again.
