ST. THOMAS AQUINAS PARISH Dear Parishioners: Earlier this week the disheartening but realistic message was circulated that we may not be “out of the woods” with regard to COVID-19 until next Fall. First, an effective vaccine has to be discovered. Then the vaccine must be manufactured in quantities sufficient for the need. The vaccine’s distribution will have to be prioritized (first responders, health care workers, the elderly and most vulnerable, etc.) and administered to them. Then the rest of us can be inoculated. It was a very informative article, the bottom line of which is: be prepared to wear masks and practice social distancing for quite some time to come. As frustrating as this may be, the current outbreak of surges reminds us of just how insidious this virus is. With an incubation period of up to ten days before an infected person starts to show symptoms, a “carrier” can quite innocently come into close contact with dozens – if not hundreds – of unsuspecting individu-als and potentially pass the virus unwittingly on to them. The current science informs us that in the absence of an effec-tive vaccine, since any one of us could be that unknowing and unknown carrier of the virus, wearing facial masks and maintain-ing a safe distance of at least six feet from non-related people combine to form the most effective way of limiting its spread to others. Whether there is a government mandate to wear masks and practice social distancing or not, these behaviors are the responsible way to act. Not only that. Last Sunday’s Gospel reminded us that half of the greatest commandment pronounced by the Lord is to love our neighbor as ourselves. To love our neighbor means at least this much: that we act in ways that contribute to that neighbor’s well-being, not in a manner that threatens it. In this light, it seems to me that to wear face masks and to practice social distancing is not only the responsible way to act; it is also the Christian way. Since it appears that we could be in for many more months of having to rely upon our own personal behaviors to keep a lid on the pandemic, I suggest that the most positive attitude with which to approach these challenging times is to do so as a disciple of Jesus Christ, bearing witness to our faith by the way we live it out in real time.

At Stthomasaquinasel.org

Once again SJB and STA prepared an excellent "home-cooked" Grab and Go meal this month in the commercial kitchen at SJB. 144 meals were prepared, 28 of these meals were deliv-

ered to the homebound by 3 crews and the other meals were handed out in our parking lot drive-through. 18 SJB and

STA volunteers over the course of 2 days gave of their time to make this event happen! SJB students provid-

ed hand made cards that were included with the meals. Thanks to all for making this creative oppor-tunity to break bread together come to life! We look

forward to doing it again in November!

Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick

After 5:30pm Mass November 7th

(rescheduled from October 31st)

Anointing of the Sick is not just for the dying! It is the sacrament

that is received by those who are ill or suffering from physical, emotional or

mental disorder at any age.

What Should I do when someone is ill?

When someone in your family or a friend is seriously

ill or confined to the home for a period of time, please contact the parish office

(876.2457). Will check with Father for his availability to visit,

pray with the sick person via phone, or perhaps bring Communion. The person may also receive the Sacrament of the

Anointing of the Sick. It is very important that family

and friends participate in the Sacrament and give witness to the solemnity

and prayerful experience of peace.
