Whether it is for a family member, a best friend or a co-worker, it is often dif- ficult to find that perfect gift. We spend time looking at sale flyers, watching Ebay or Craigslist for ideas, and sometimes resort to not-so-subtle hinting with questions like “what do you want for Christmas?” With some of them, the problem is compounded by the fact that they really don’t need anything and have already bought anything they want (yes, men, I know who we are.) When you stop for a moment, you realize that in our rush to give that perfect gift we might be overlooking something…or rather someone…God! Here He is, the one who started it all with the gift of His only Son that first Christmas, and we are leaving Him out. I know, it’s hard to give someone who truly does “have it all” an appropriate gift…but years ago I found out what God wants more than anything…is YOU! In his second letter to the Corinthian church (II Cor 8:5), the apostle Paul talked about the Macedonian Christians and how, even in their poverty they overflowed with generosity. Their secret? Paul shares it in verse 5: ….but they gave themselves first to the Lord, and then, by the will of God to us… You see, once you have truly given your will, your desires, your needs, your goals, your plans… the list goes on, but you get the idea…you are truly becoming more like Him. You’ll notice that the list doesn’t necessarily include material possessions….sometimes it’s easier to give that than to yield ourselves to Him. But once we have given ourselves to Him, we begin to enter in to the Macedonian mindset, that is, giving “according to their means…and beyond their means!” So as we prepare for Christmas, let’s be sure we first give ourselves to the One who gave us everything, holding nothing back! Then let’s ask Him to direct us in our gifting to be His hands, showing His love and grace to someone this Christmas season. I believe it will make this the best Christmas ever! Merry Christmas,
